Great video Alex.So many people are anti shoe people out there. Horse shoes done properly are for 3 reasons, protection, correction and a means of applying traction devises. Likely poor footed horse, someone applied shoes to help horse stay sound(protection). Horse pulls shoe and removes hoof wall. Good footed horse can pull shoe and do no damage to hoof wall. It gets to be a viscous cycle. Casting is a great option for this type of horse. Not likely a horse that could go barefoot and be usable. 👍

😄 I've used casting tape for decades in small animal medicine; this is an innovative new use for it. Interesting!

Good stuff. Ive used this on an eventer that had been dead lame and went on to place 8th out of 60. I like the change up on cutting out between the heels and use of glue to secure and reinforce. Got one today I suspected the full wrap was causing issues so I think this tweek will make a big difference.

Wow this is amazing. im trying hard to barefoot rehab a full 4 hooves x bones-through-the/sole founder in my QH induced by surgery/fever. 5 yrs on rears are 100%, one front is looking good, but the other front must have sustained more damage and i havent yet had good wall length to let sole build up, always walking on sole in front 1/3 of hoof so never advancing. I can see that if i could build up fake wall like this it would give him relief to walk & load properly & let that wall come down with even pressure all around for 6 weeks. Ive had 2 goes with the full wrap but felt it was leading to heel contraction so stopped. Im going to try this, even if it takes me 10 wraps to get it right! thank you!

Not every podiatrist will make a house call and throw in a shoe shine on the deal. I had not heard of that product before, but it is not a surprise to see another use for the epoxy products. The final form is very nice.

About 1" down from coronary band, the dorsal angle changes dramatically! The heels need to be gradually lowered AS the toe length is shortened (and breakover moved back). Long toes are so common, hardly anyone even notices.

wish I had known about this when transitioning my horse to barefoot! He has the same kind of feet, won't hold a shoe, always tore up; has a bit of "clubby" foot that is smaller than the rest that is just...awful to try and put a shoe on. He's been barefoot in turn out a year now and we ride in Cavallo hoof boots. But man, getting to that point was rough!

At a glance, it seems like the toe is long and heels are high causing the flare in the toe causing the separation in the toe quarters and toe, no?

You drive your nail way to high which cause your shoe to break off. When you do your next shoeing.your nail holes appears half way between your new nailing.plus you rasp off way to much wall.

@@AlexRidgewayFarrier I would of like to see the horse move before your application of a cast, because (11:51) he's still stabbing, but no matter. (0:46) that is not a "boxy-up-right hoof" it is a "locked in founder hoof"...look (1:01) at the bars and the distance between the apex of the frog and break over. When this horse foundered it pulled the heels forward. The heels appear to have moved back but not correctly because the bars were never corrected as evidenced by the curve in the bars. This curve puts undue pressure on the center of articulation of the coffin joint creating pain (navicular syndrome) the toe length was never corrected and a huge wall flare is visible (11:21) (0:54)
Now as for your cast...all you did was put anerobic bacteria into a petri dish...which is never a good idea. This video was taken in August 2018 ... is there a follow-up ?
