Tharja: How Awakening Made a Good... Bad Character. [Fire Emblem: Support Science #14]

  • Tharja is a Plegian Dark Mage who joins Chrom and his army in their effort to defeat King Gangrel and save Lady Emmeryn. After recruiting her, it won’t take long to realize that she’s obsessed about Robin. She’s a total stalker: following them everywhere, paying attention to literally every single they do and thinking about them even in other support conversations she has. She’s also generally pretty weird, anti-social, unfriendly, selfish and manipulative. Such personality traits seem problematic in a game that highly values friendship and marriage. How then, can a woman so unfriendly and cold, and whose heart is seemingly dedicated only to Robin, able to work in a game like this?
    Tharja isn’t a kind woman most of the time, and usually doesn’t want to interact with others if she has nothing to gain from them. As it stands, she’s like the anti-thesis of the themes of companionship and “bonds” that Awakening strives to underscore.
    It prompts an important question: Does she even deserve to belong in this cast?.. Yes, I do. I very much believe so.

    I always rationalized that Future Tharja was more unhinged because she lost her husband, hence the abuse on Noire, and that Present Tharja did her hexes on her family in this timeline because that's just what she'd do when she gets angry. Recognizing this makes her realize the direction she is gonna end up going down is gonna mirror her future self and actively tries to avoid it, hence her more positive endings.

    • @StoicForce
      @StoicForce 6 лет назад +159

      I see what you're saying, but there is one contradiction, which may be due to the translation or the writting itself, which is: in the Father Support conversation, Noire explains that future Tharja would hex her husband when he would stand up against experimenting on her, like what was happening in the present time. So, this means that even while her husband was alive, Tharja would use Noire as her guinea pig to test hexes on.
      Using Noire to test hexes was not something she started doing as a result of losing her husband; she did this before that happened.
      The only thing that stopped present Tharja from becoming her future self, but at a much earlier point in time and being far worse (wanting to train Noire in dark magic), is that she had the insight to see that her future self cared enough about her child to never teach her dark magic, even despite losing her husband. Since present Tharja hasn't experienced this loss, she has a more clear mind, and has no obssesive desire for vengence strong enough to warrant further experimentation on Noire, so (out of respect for her future self) she decides against dark magic and, by her own choice, hexes altogether on Noire.
      Writing all this out made it clear to me that, at first, Tharja saw Noire as merely a tool, and not something she should care about [family]. It was only when she put herself in her future self's shoes and asked "why would she keep this from her?" could she understand the bond behind it, and through that, begin to form her own connection and care about Noire.

      I don’t think for a second Tharja would put a harmful curse on Robin and Henry would probably just deflect it. I think she one of the last people in Chroms army to die. She survived Robins betrayal and considered him dead or her husband was killed by him. That’s why Noire said her father was dead. After his death Tharja spiraled into depression that she used dark magic like a drug to cope.

    The only justification for her obsession is that she’s plegian. Where the major religion worships grima. And robin is at least in some extent the manifestation of grima. So perhaps that line about it being an attraction “on a higher plane” is because he/she is literally her god?

    • @TheXanondorf
      @TheXanondorf 6 лет назад +291

      This is how I've always interpreted it. Robin clearly walks around with well known Grima iconography on their tactician clothes. Henry has many of the same images on his cloak as well.

    • @paranoidpanda7407
      @paranoidpanda7407 5 лет назад +352

      How about a more meta interpretation? Consider this: Tharja displays a strange attraction not only to Robin, but to Marth (The Card version - Elinjar or something?) in the Outrealms. She also has a slight interest in Kiran in Heroes, and Rajhat, her other incarnation, quite likes Corrin.
      Now, let me tie this together a bit: Corrin, like Rajhat, is supposedly another incarnation of Robin, and Adult Tiki claims Male Robin to have a similar soul to Marth, to the point where she accidentally calls him MarMar. Similarly, many Awakening and Fates characters in Heroes will claim Kiran to be a lot like Corrin or Robin. There's also the odd case of Katrina, who in Heroes outright proclaims that Kiran and Kris are the same person in her lvl40 convo, and Kris and Marth are often mistaken for each other, to the point where Kris' legacy were basically absorbed into legends about Marth. Finally, Lyn in the Awakening DLC will declare Robin to be her own tactician, Mark, without hesitation.
      Conclusion? These characters, aside from Marth (who is simply the first and most well known character that both birthed and introduced people to the FE series) are all player inserts. The evidence suggests that they all have a similar soul, or at least some kind of connection that makes them so oddly similar to eachother, and what else could that connection be but the player? The strange "power" that Tharja is attracted to in Robin and a select few others? It might just be YOU, the TRUE influencer of each character's actions! Now THAT would be some meta ass fanservice!

    That... Isn't how I interpreted her S support with Virion. I actually thought it was quite sweet, and that she didn't want him to die for her, but instead to live his life for her. Plus there was that whole subtext about her making Virion do those things for the benefit of others. One of her good supports imo.

      THIIIIS!!!! I wholeheartedly agree! Ghast's take on the Virion/Tharja supports is the only point in this video I disagree with tbh.
      It also shows that Tharja can be ""nice"" but only if it directly benefits her or makes her happy. The support also provides some really good context as to why Tharja lost her marbles after whichever husband she has died in the future. Virion in the bad future essentially broke their "promise" they had upon becoming engaged so...... *yikes!*
      My only complaint would be that Virion and Noire supports though. Why IntSys didn't diversify the dialogue to fit different possible "dad contexts" is beyond me. Especially considering that the crux of the first two supports is that Virion is immune to curses but. That's just me!!

    Ghast I think I can explain tharja’s obsession with robin in a way a more nuanced way. You called her obsession a cliche, and it is, but it’s a different cliche than a simple anime yandere trope. The true cliche is lovecraftian in nature, she mistakes robin as his evil twin counterpart grima, who is literally her god in game. In her dreams a visage of her god(that she mistakes for robin) makes love to her so she may bear the antichrist, it’s a horror trope in the vain of rosemary’s baby and such. In the lovecraft poem Dagon, a long lost worshipper of a cult is called to a location by erotic dream to give birth to a giant tentacle demon, I think this is the trope tharja perfectly embodies, just look at grima and his elder god imagery. She is the perfect classic horror insert character to fire emblem. When you look at tharja from this perspective it totally changes her as a character, from being an unredeemable creep, to a possible casualty of a religion that would sacrifice her humanity in a world ending plot, similar to other grima worshippers that we see jump to their deaths in the 3rd act. Let me know if you think I’m right.

    • @EpicNinjaShiro
      @EpicNinjaShiro 6 лет назад +85

      It's funny how much people forgot that aspect, that she was obsessively loyal to him because of Grima. In a way she's very much a dark knight, she has her own (albeit more selfish) code she follows and Robin goes at the top, regardless of whomever else that supposedly follows him/Grima tries to do to stop his rebellious attitude (in their minds).

    You know playing this game I never actually realized that she was supposed to be a fanservice character. Outside of hr obsession with robin I simply didn't notice anything specfically pandering to sexual intent. Honestly the only reason i liked her was her personality her original portraits were never especially attractive to me. Hell I didn't even know she was well-endowed because her portraits always had her holding a tome to her chest. I think that speaks to how she's devolved over the years from being genuinely interesting if flawed to pure fanservice. That's mostly why I find myself defending her in recent years.

    • @WraithMagus
      @WraithMagus 6 лет назад +185

      The thing is, like most characters in Fire Emblem, Tharja is based upon an archetype. Between the time that Radiant Dawn and Awakening came out, an anime named Future Diary came out whose basic premise revolved around a Battle Royal/Hunger Games-style contest where the main character needed to stay alive against other contestants trying to kill him, and his only real hope for survival was that another contestant was Yuno, a psychopathic stalker with an obsession for him willing and able to murder everyone else trying to hurt him.
      The entire point of Future Diary was that she created inherent dramatic stakes, since Yuno's necessary for his survival, but also his most dangerous enemy. At one point, she manages to talk the main character's mother into letting her stay over for dinner as a friend of the main character, then drops the duffle bag she had with her saying it was so great she didn't have to use it since his mom was so nice... revealing it wasn't full of a change of clothes or anything, but hacksaws and hatchets to the main character. The whole point was that she *wasn't* supposed to be desirable.
      Because otaku, however, yandere characters became a thing and a fetish, and like with the Tsundere archetype, the original conceit of the character as someone flawed or having emotional troubles they need to get over was forgotten for just making a character who says "baka" a lot being popular and pasted into every harem show.... And IS is nothing but willing to cash in on any kind of archetype or fad.
      That's not to say such characters can't be well written, but as with any fad or meme, there's a lot of people who will just copy-paste the shallowest understanding of how a character works as pure fetish bait into other stories to cash in on the popularity of the fad.
      Tharja was fairly well-written as far as these things go, but at the same time, there are some people who hate yanderes as a general concept and will go out after any of them, even well-written ones, because they have been turned against the whole archetype by seeing too many badly-written examples of them... or just not seeing the appeal of them in the first place, since it takes a pretty specific type of person to think that a creepy stalker who obsesses over you is a GOOD thing in the first place. (You can draw your own conclusions over what sort of person fetishizes a woman in a body stocking that will always want them to a self-destructive degree no matter how they behave or look for literally no good reason...)

    • @marche800
      @marche800 6 лет назад +148

      Yandere had been a thing as far back as the early 90's as Yukako Yamagishi from JoJo's bizarre adventure Part 4 was one of the first in the trope and a very popular character. Future Diaries is just a prominent example but not the origin of the trope nor was it what made it popular to begin with.
      To explain the appeal of yandere is go back to the appeal of art. That is to bend really and overemphasize certain traits. For the longest time humans were obsessed with perfection but originally and even recently the idea of accentuating specific physical or mental traits in a piece of art or story had also garnered human interest. One or the earliest pieces of art "the venus of willendorf" is the earliest example of this. The venus of willendorf is a short chubby woman with a large bosom and no face. The appeal of this is same appeal you might see in modern art and especially anime i.e. accentuating what are considered attractive features for the sake of attracting positive attenting. Things like large eyes, colourful hair, shapely bodies, revealing clothes, etc. in the 80s extremely large muscular manly men dominate both western and eastern culture, why do you thing that is? it's another example of exaggerating traits for the sake of appeasing a certain ideal as seen in the Venus of willendorf.
      Yandere's are a bit of a corruption of this. they weren't originally made to be desirable however the same principles behind the Venus of willendorf apply to them. First their appearances are usually in line with them usually being an attractive anime character (sometimes an especially attractive one). But even their obsession is an exaggeration in some ways. It's an exaggeration of the doting lover who takes a deep interest in you. Things like that are appealing and even when taking to extremes like in a Yandere theres still a great possibility that people will continue to see those traits as appealing even if they act accordingly to that extreme. In addition the depths of a Yandere's obsession or insanity can be intriguing in it's own right. I'm not saying that everyone would like Yandere's because of the Venus principle I'm just saying those who would find those that find the traits that are being exaggerated appealing in the first place have a pretty good chance of being facinated by the exaggeration as well. Going on a more personal level theres also plenty of people who could be very lonely and lacking love or care who would find the king of genuine (if insane) interest and love giving off by a yandere to their person of interest appealing even in extremism. I mean again a yandere is simply an extreme of traits that you could find in regular people and especially partners. Things like being protective, loving, jealous, etc are all reasonably traits and it's only reasonable due to the Venus Appeal that people would still find these things appealing even at dangerous levels.

    • @WraithMagus
      @WraithMagus 6 лет назад +30

      I know Yuno wasn't really the first one, but from what I understand, she seems to be what made it take off, and cemented the trope in its modern incarnation, much the same as Asuka Souryuu Langley and Tousaka Rin have a huge share of responsibility for the boom in and codification of tsundere. (With "tsunderes have to have twintails" basically being *directly* Rin's fault.) In particular, while there were characters like that, I don't remember hearing the term "yandere" before that show, but afterwards, you could see games explicitly marketing things like "date a yandere".
      Again, I don't recall hearing the term "yandere" used before Future Diary, or seeing the fetishized version of the trope in any FE games before awakening, even though there were dark mages like Raigh or Canas.
      So far as the appeal of the archetype goes, it's not just someone being lonely, it seems the core of the appeal is that it's a girl who wants to be your girlfriend no matter what your personal flaws may be, and no matter how you might treat them... so long as you aren't cheating on them. (But hey, even that's malleable in a lot of games if they want to make a harem show or game... FGO has a yandere Kiyohime sneak into the MC's bed right alongside Serena and Raikou.) Yanderes seem built to appeal expressly to the anti-social types that either dislike dealing with women or are just so plain terrified of women that they want one who already bypasses the "getting to know them" stage to leap directly into the "sleeping together" stage.

    There are two other things that I need to mention about Tharja:
    Tharja's parents were abusive to her as well, since she was indoctrinated in the dark arts since conception, as she mentions in her B support conversation with Noire; so unfortunately she commits the same atrocities as her parents, until the A support, where she realized the mistakes she made and breaks the cycle.
    Also, Robin's support with Tharja may not be to be liked by the majority, but her conversation with Robin in the Summer scramble dlc, when they are married,makes it up for that support. It's just adorable and funny.

    I love how such a huge part of Tharja's character is not judging people based solely on appearances. She's written in a way that inherently stands out to players as creepy and mean, but through support dialogue we learn more about her and get a better understanding of her as a person, similarly to the the way that she takes interest in other people's problems and gets to know them through picking their brains.

    I would go as far to even say she wasn't purely designed for fan service in mind either at this point. Tharja is from plegia which has a lot Egypt themed stuff of the like, and when you compare her wardrobe the Egyptian females in actual history it isn't so unreasonable, in fact most ladies went completely topless in if our research is correct. There is a major difference between tharja and camilla from this point of view, I mean just look at her portrait in her support convos in this video, the focus on her is about her creepy personality where she is covering herself and reclusive, when everything about camilla is bringing attention to her butt, breasts, and crotch. Her reception from fans on the other hand is what made her such controversial character and then IS went on the fan service train. But just remember that this came after her initial release with the swimsuit thing, and then all her portrails after that where focusing more on fanservice. But I honestly think her character was made to be interesting originally rather than a sex appeal.

    Tharja is an amazing character when you stop and think about it. Let's just consider her "stalkerdom". She's a dark mage, she Plegian and she's attuned to dark energies. Then the avatar of the dark dragon comes strolling through and she is completely drawn to them. Well, no shit. I like to think it's not something under her control at all. I believe her draw to Robin is supernatural; she is just caught up in the maelstrom of dark energies latent and inherent in Robin. This makes her a more interesting character for sure, and one that it's hard not to pity.

    Maybe Tharja’s obsession with Robin is almost... instinctive. I’ll explain what I mean. As a Dark Mage, Tharja is connected to Grima. This is shown in the fact that the default Dark Mage sprite shows the character wearing a Grima hat. Dark Mages are connected to Plegian religion, which revolves around Grima. Robin, essentially, IS Grima. Maybe Tharja is displaying an instinctive reaction to the Fell Dragon’s presence. A few points:
    1: The website says that Tharja fell in love with Robin due to dreams about him/her. Maybe these dreams were a subconsciously reaction to Grima.
    2: The “meeting of the minds” Tharja felt may be the reaction of her darkness to Robin’s. Her Dark soul could have responded to Robin’s dark soul, causing a sort of connection.
    3: Tharja is not a lesbian. She is not capable of S-ranking any female character. (Unfortunately) However, she falls in love with Female Robin. One explanation for her falling in love with a woman despite ZERO lesbian inclinations could be supernatural. The Fell Dragon’s pull may be stronger than her sexual preferences.
    - now, you may be wondering: What about Henry? He shows no attraction to Robin until he S-ranks female Robin. I have a theory: Henry just isn’t as serious about darkness as Tharja. She clearly has a greater respect for their profession, while he sees dark magic as a means to an end. He tells Ricken that he uses Dark magic because it feels good, and he tells Chrom that he just like killing things. It makes sense that he wouldn’t be as attracted to Grima as Tharja is.
    But hey, that’s just a theory.
    A GAME theory.
    Thanks for reading

      Point 3 has an easy explanation: Tharja is bisexual but IntSys didn't wanna face backlash for allowing her to also S-Support with women. They tried to make up for this with Rhajat in Fates... only to do the same thing to poor Soleil.

      As much sense as this may make, don't forget that LGBT relationships were and still are sadly "controversial" to say the least. Tharja may well be bi- or les. She just isn't given a real chance to show it because Nintendo/IntSys/whatever didn't want the game to be hated in the States for it. So she has to stay in the closet, unfortunately.

One thing I like about your support sciences is how you put in enough effort into widely criticized characters so that people can realise not every character is as simple an tropey as they first appear. Though in all seriousness, Awakening isn't that bad when it comes to supports. There's a lot of supports that are fairly uninspiring and "meh" but there aren't many that are actually offensive. Most of the problems stem from the sheer volume and how a lot of them feel like square 1, even when the character could've been far past it.
      I'd love to see an overview of the differences in how Awakening and Fates handled this.

    Tharja is and always will be my favorite female character, and I do believe that the Tharja we meet in our playthrough ends up being a different Tharja than the one who mistreats Noire in the future. Even Tharja sees that when she basically says "I don't know if she loved you, but I know I do." Also, like others have pointed out in some of the comments, I tihnk the Tharja from Noires timeline turns out how she does because of losing her husband.

  • @Liz-xq2wi
    @Liz-xq2wi 6 лет назад +341

    Honestly it doesn't surprise me that Tharja abuses her family. Given how conflicted she is as a character, just because she wants a family, doesn't mean she will actually change and treat them well. That's actually pretty realistic when you consider how many people have kids just because they want them, not necessarily because they can take care of them.

    • @shadenox8164

    Loved this video, first one I've watched so far. One thing I would add though. I feel that you should have brought in the future dlc, where naga asks you to save the alt versions of the kids. They each get a specialized dialogue with their father (unlike their support). This brings a lot more depth to the father/child relationships. For example if Fredrick is Noire's father she will tell him he died protecting a village and Tharja goes on a crazy rampage in her grief. This is way more satisfying reasons for future Tharja's actions. Despite that I still love her and Libra's support best. Thanks for the awesome video 😁

      Yes, I would prefer it that Camilla didn't have the appearance of an anthropomorphic cow clad in black, but it isn't anything that ruins the enjoyment of the game for me; what _does_ is a story and/or cast which reveals that the devs couldn't give two hoots about producing a worthwhile product that actually leaves the consumer with something valuable to take away from the experience. It's that kind of garbage that caused me to not finish Fates, not girls in tantalizing outfits.

    I really want to believe that Tharja's obsession over Robin is the vague life that Robin has. Being the avatar of Grima, Robin has a fate that transcends any mortal man or woman. Tharja's dark magic comes in that same area of Grima. Which I do believe the obsession she had also works for Female Robin.
    Robin is meant to destroy and corrupt. To dominate and rule. Tharja, as dark as she is aims for her own benefits, but to see Robin and his/her fate. Means she's absolutely enamored by such power. By such alone, she'd be drawn to such. So obsessed to see what Robin does, what might awaken Robin's real purpose. She falls in love merely from what she saw and envisions. Though she, in the end is obsessed or is eloped with them. She falls in love with Robin with the sole fact of his/her great fate.
    She is obsessed, she desires power, and desires influence. Romancing Robin was a step for that. Even when in the end.

Yet still have the compassion and even though the Noire' fathers' supports are questionable, the one with the avatar is some what interesting that even her obsession with the avatar is not enough to save him from her wrath even if it was played to comedic effect it can show to some extent he doesn't rule her every thought.
    And on a side note, with Morgan attempting to get to know her if she ends up being her daughter. It was kind of cute, she still had a bit of her stand-offish response. But realizing her fragile mental state due to her lack of memory she held off on her usual negative approach and gave her an actual nice memory.

    My theory of why Tharja is obsessed with Robin is because Tharja was subjected to rituals from the Grimleaf to make her obsessed, making her have dreams of her and Robin having sex, so she can be a breeding partner for Robin in order to have offspring who can serve as another host body for Grima in case Robin died. Probably not the case as I don't remember what specifically made Robin the perfect host for Grima but it's something.

    • @xacmashe3852
      @xacmashe3852 5 лет назад +4

      Uh...that's, okay. I saw it more as the Grimleal conditioned her to worship Grima, and since Robin is the vessel for Grima, Tharja essentially views Robin as her deity.

    to be fair. The Tharja of Noire's future comes from a timeline where Grima was deemed to succeed. She is a Grimleal after all so that could have been a catalyst for her becoming so abusive of her family, as the Fallen Dragon had returned, and insanity reigned supreme

    Personally, Tharja is one of my favorite characters from Awakening, and I love Camilla as well. Saying that probably just destroys a lot of my credibility, but it always kinda sucks when you end up enjoying a character that most of the fandom sees as the token fanservice girl. I agree that their fanservice aspects can be... problematic at best, but I still think there are other parts of who they are that are really interesting.
    And, of course, with Tharja comes the topic of Rhajat. God, I really love Rhajat, too. I know that a lot of people just see her as "Tharja 2.0" and while I think that's kinda true, I also think that Rhajat does have some differences from Tharja as well.
    Maybe you could do a video like that someday; comparing Rhajat, Asugi, and Caeldori to their Awakening counterparts? Might be a fun little future project, I don't know.

    I always liked Tharja. My impression of her was that she was an ass, but not evil. She could be rude, spiteful, and cruel, but she also knew when she had overstepped her bounds and usually knows how to hold back and not actually do anything harmful. The only things that kinda bothered me were her treatment of her daughter, and her interactions with robin when married. With her daughter, its kind of handwaved that she had gone mad after losing her husband, causing her to lose her limits and become obsessed. With Robin though, its because her child dialogue doesn't change regardless of her spouse. Robin is the one character that she clearly seems to go out of her way to have see her positively. They are also the only person she seems to be interested in accommodating. Her child dialogue, however, portrays a relationship where Tharja is controlling, dominant, and seemingly playfully cruel. Which makes sense as the dynamic for all of her relationships, except with Robin. Oh well, I guess it was too much trouble to have a custom dialogue just for that one relationship.

I question why Faye was even added to SoV to begin with. She adds literally nothing to the game and her supports with Alm and Silque were painful to read.

    This was very well-written and reminded me of things I did like about Tharja when I played Awakening non-stop in summer 2013, and even I have to agree with you. However, Tharja is still a very abusive character. The poor writing of the father supports, especially Noire and her father as you pointed out, shows how the Awakening team did not take the father supports into mind and made it a scenario that expands upon Tharja's and Noire's support. Tharja, in both present and in future, is horribly abusive. Future Tharja more so than she is in the present, but nonetheless Noire and her father are subject to Tharja's abuse. A quality such as that makes her irredeemable in my eyes. The bad outweighs the good. Just because Tharja is nice to Kellam or Nowi doesn't absolve her of her actions towards Noire. The same with loving her husband. Just because she does genuinely love them doesn't mean she can be abusive towards them. Like Ghast said, we can hope Tharja learns from her future self and from her current actions, but as within the narrative of Awakening and the extended FE universe (Heroes, online info, soon to be Warriors) she hasn't shown any sign that she will other than her happy endings.

    I've mostly rationalized away the fact that Tharja hexes Noir into having a crazy alter ego because *the world is being invaded by Grima and the Risen and people are dying all over the place* and the only way Tharja saw to make sure her daughter survives was by turning her into a twisted warrior.
    Obviously many people don't understand what WAR is like, so they don't understand Tharja's rationale behind this. If you read Noire's supports with other characters, you'll see that she is very fragile in her true nature, untainted by Tharja's influence. I suspect Tharja didn't have time to care about her daughter's own character development, despite caring for Noire. If Noire keeps being weak then she'll quickly perish and be unable to help Tharja avenge her husband who died as well so something's gotta give.
    I'm not trying to excuse Tharja's actions, but I'm also not presumptuous enough to confidently be able to say that if I had a way to save my child's life by corrupting them, that I wouldn't attempt to do so to the best of my ability (and Tharja is a dark mage so she has to work with what she got.)
    At any rate, I usually do not involve myself in discussions revolving around Tharja's character because most of the time they're just a cesspool of trolling but this video was well made so I figured I might add my 2 cents. Good Job.

    • @battykat7086

      Everyone else was in the war and they didn't stoop to abuse. Also, Noire is timid already due to being scared of her mother after being a Guinea pig test subject for so long.
      Like I overall agree with Ghast's points here but... "oh it was during the war" is a pretty lame explanation especially considering again none of the other characters abused their children to "whip them into shape" during the war. You don't see Lucina trying to beg Sumia to convince Chrom not to beat her in the future, after all.
      I think that's why, even if the character undoubtedly still has depth to her, I still can't bring myself to like the character and I still believe Noire deserves a better mother. I just feel like, in-game, her actions are just... excused. Then in the fandom and with the way IntSys treats her now, she's just a generic sexy yandere witch goth gf of sorts.

      In the Summer Scramble DLC Ricken and Henry talk about the effects of dark magic on the mind. It makes the world very gloomy, and you feel constantly alone. Tharja lashes out because she is not used to family, she is not used to being close to someone. She's married and hexes her husband because she's confused at the prospect of being someone's soulmate, and when he dies, she wants to bring him back, and being as socially inept as she is, she practices those hexes on her poor daughter trying to resurrect him. She doesn't realize she's hurting Noire as bad as she is, and in her supports with Noire, she learns what future her did to Noire, and realizes that she hurt Noire very, very badly. Because she knows this, she is incredibly less likely to try and experiment on her daughter, and in her ending with Donnel, she doesn't, she experiments on the people of his village since she hated them anyway.

    Although I, like some others in this comment section, not to mention Ghast himself, find Tharja's interactions with Robin not to be all that good character development wise, there are some changes that would have made it quite compelling. I would have written it so that Tharja, Henry, and Robin were actually all friends before Robin's mother rescued her son before dying fleeing Plegia. When you first meet up with Tharja while trying to rescue Emmermyn, she would be ecstatic to see you, Robin, again, only to become distraught and angery when you ask who she is, but calms down when you explain that you have amnesia, still upset though. In your C support with her, you ask her to tell you about your past, and she says how you two were best friends who did everything together, with a third kid named Henry basically being the joker of the trio. You then bring up just how sad she was when you didn't remember her, and she reveals that she had fallen in love with you but never confessed it before your father decided to isolate you from everything that wasn't The Grimleal. She then bluntly says that she has been saving herself for you in the five years since, and when you react to this proposition by saying that he would need to form an emotional bond with her before you would ever consider that. She then becomes infuriated, not because you said no to having sex with her, but because your stating that you no longer have an emotional bond with her, making it very clear that, that is why she is angry as she yells at you and storms off. In your B support with her, you go to her to apologize for your poorly chosen words, which she accepts while also apologizing herself for just offering sex straight out of nowhere, but while also stating that she does in fact love you more than anything. You ask her if you loved her back, and she says that she doesn't know. You then ask if you can accompany her somewhere, as friends, which she says yes to. You two then proceed to walk around a nearby town. Skipping past that, when you two get back, you say that you had a good time. She says that she did too, blushing. I'm not really sure what the A support would be, nor most of the S support, but the latter would end with her saying that she can't wait until the wedding, and you saying that you can't either. She then clarifies by saying that she literally can not wait, while it is implied that she is grabbing you through your pants, causing you to blush and nervously say okay while heading towards your tent. Tharja's other supports would also give occasional reference to her childhood friendship with Robin of coarse, Henry, for example, revealing in his B support with Tharja that he was rather jealous of Robin because of Tharja's crush on him, causing Tharja to be taken aback by his confession. All of the aspects of her personality, other than there being no reason for her infatuation of coarse, that were talked about in this video would still apply of coarse as well. This change would have changed Tharja's obsession with Robin from somewhat creepy to rather endearing.

      I disagree with regards to Henry, I think it's better that he's some kinda nature born witch instead of another plagian dark mage gone rouge. That said having Tharja know Robin would be a boon for her character, I'm not sure if it could negatively affect the plot though, as she would also probably know who his father is and his family's relation to the fell dragon cult as well.

But as ghast have shown it, she suffer from the usual support flaw of awakening (flaw that would get worse with fate), the writing pitfall/holes induce by the sheer number of support. And by that i mean some of her late support completely raze what was built upon, i am essentially talking about the father support talked by ghast which manage to throw most people off at the worst time possible since it is at the very end of her support so there is little way to redeem it after and if you are like me, you can't break up the avatar and tharja S-support. Meaning that a lot of people that relied/self-inserted with her partner (and even those that did not) feel like they have been lured out by tharja, seduced by her with lies, hence the whole "thot" thing/feeling, i believe. I know my judgement like many other was influence by that and after such a long time (and after save-backtracking out of the s-support), i cannot consider her a well written character as much as i love the idea they were going for. And i dearly wish IS will perfect Tharja formula and learn from their mistakes to make her archetype into something truly great for the next fire emblem.
    (Not just a fan-service carbon copy like Rhajat though)
