  • After my recent Southern Africa tour on one, I wanted to find out how it handles a typical London commute and traffic.
    Lots of info, pictures, etc.. on my website, Facebook, Instagram & Twitter:

    Don't let those trolls get to you RJ, I think it kind of comes with the turf, your subscriber base speaks volumes about what people really think......and welcome the wonderful world of the GS, I am forced to agree with you, I too have several bikes of different types, but the GS is the one that can do it all and do it all extremely well - I've yet to find a better all rounder. Lovin' your work as ever RJ, do keep it up....all the best - TMF

    There’s something so peaceful and tranquil about a GS. Mostly the sound. So soothing.

    Don't let one internet warrior get to you RJ. We all know your passion for bikes and your opinion isn't for sale. We just watched you ride across Africa on one of those bikes, that alone speaks volumes. I would looooooove to have a GS but it's just not in the budget right now.

    I rode a GS for a couple of days whilst my RR was having a service. Did I like it? Yes - but it wasn't perfect. The speedo was hard to just glance at; I found myself having to take a second look at it to read the indicated speed properly (and my eyes are fine btw). Wind blast was loud considering the tall screen and in town I actually found it too big for day to day riding. I guess the wider dual carriageway roads of London favour it better than the smaller lanes we have here in Southampton.
    However... On longer journeys and two-up it was sublime. The electronics are incredible - Heated grips, cruise control, up/down quickshifter, traction control, ABS - all make riding easier, more enjoyable and safer. And 300 miles on a tank, you'd forget what a fuel station looks like after going that long without filling up. Would I buy a 2016 GS? No. Would I buy a GS in the future? I wouldn't rule it out.

    saw it had the Anakee 3 tires on this bike. I put a set on my 2009 R1200 and they lasted about 16,000 miles with me touring and commuting 100% on it back then. Man, what a bike! 45 to 50 or 55 miles per gallon, tires that last almost as long as the set on my first bike, a CBR250R. I was never dissapointed with its capabilities.

    RJ, this was exactly what I needed at the perfect time. I was just making my mind up about a new bike (GS1200 vs. KTM super adventure) and I was concerned about the agile nature of the GS. I knew you'd show it in it's TRUE light. As it turns out, I chose the KTM (and love it) but I know I could have gone either way and been happy! Thanks again for all the great videos!!! Cheers buddy!

    I'm a GS owner and I just love it to bits... even her being a bit older (2008) it's just good at everything as you said. it has such a great balance that even being a small guy, I have no problems riding her (1.7m/5'7" and 60kg/130lb).
    I encourage you to get the new GS, I'll be pretty jealous of that RJ!

    I've had my GS for 7 years now and go everywhere on it! Its always sounds like a complete farce when you tell folks they really can do everything on it! and yes a dedicated bikes to road or off road or touring can be much much better at their task in hand. All I know is i can potter down small lanes all day long easily and at the end of the day when i'm 100 miles from home the Gs will scurry home at an indecent rate of knots and that'll do for me. Biking is to personal a thing for everyone to agree on anything so as long as you're out riding what the fuck does it matter

      But it's so boring compared to the KTM, plus BMW's aren't as reliable as people seem to think, especially the GS's, lots of issues with the switchgear for example, plus you can remove the clocks without any tools which would be a big deal for London where bike thieves looooove to steal GS's.

    • @Modelero

      Yeah, this GS are full of problems but owners won't tell you because they're too proud of they're 18k € bike.
      A friend of mine was overtaking a car and the ECU cut off the power (to prevent damages because there was another problem with the engine) and he almost got squashed by the incoming car in the opposite lane.
      Then he brought the GS to a BMW dealer and they give him a loaner car (not another motorcycle) because for them cars and bikes are the same WTF.

    The GS(A) is indeed the best grab-and-go travelling bike. I love the S1000xr's engine more, but the flattwin handles way much better especially in tight turns. For me, the best bike to ride 1500+km to the Alps/ Pyrenees and still having a blast when arriving.

    If you would sell the SMR, I definitely buy it off you! Having a 1200GS myself and driving 40.000km a year on average both fun and commute. I would advise to get the GS, it can do and handle anything! Not perfectly in any way like a S1000R but it is my Swiss army knife of choice for every ride I take it on. When you said "I got a GS 1200..." I thought for a second that you actually bought it. Couldn't be the case though, because then it would have at least aftermarket mirrors on it :D
    However, if you plan to get one I think it would substitute the Super Duke more than the SMR. I mean it is the same type of motorcycle and it will do similar things well as the KTM does + the boxer engine won't have that aggressive engine braking habit you dislike. Also I always hope for the SMR to appear in the daily observation videos ;)

  • @Pocahonkers
    @Pocahonkers 8 лет назад

    If I was in your place, I'd swap the SMR for the R1200GS. The SMR isn't useless, but it's not really made for long rides and it's pretty maintenance intesive, ontop of that I very rarely see you do videos on the SMR. You probably still ride it but the KTM appears more often.
    But the R1200GS is expensive man and if you get a GS you got to get it with all the bells and whistles as far as I know and then there's soo many accessories you can throw at it!

  • @kingsqueak2221
    @kingsqueak2221 8 лет назад

    The shift assist pro, not totally in love with it on my bike, it's just o.k. Downshifts work very smoothly with the throttle closed, I haven't found a trick otherwise and they can be kind of jumpy. Up it works great under mid to hard accel, not great at lower throttle openings. The clutch feels very nice otherwise. I didn't get the keyless due to some people having issues with it, principally getting the fuel cap open if it is acting up.
    The GS/Adventure though, just consider, the giant fuel tank is pretty great, just a lazy option that takes the edge off watching the gas level. The giant tank also gives a bit more wind/weather coverage. Also the integrated racks and engine protection with the A is pretty nice as a package (easily done aftermarket too). The BMW "Adventure" luggage is nicely made and integrated with the key as well, another GS/A advantage, though it is pricey stuff. The panniers are top-opening, which I just like better than the Vario model side opening.
    One last little thing, don't use the kill switch, they've had some dumb issue in quality control with the start/kill switch wearing easily. Use the key or the off button for keyless instead, just to avoid wear on the kill switch. It gets stuck 'on' and hangs up the starter evidently. Hopefully they come out with a sturdier switch at some point.
    I knew you would come back and jump on one, from the way you were talking about it on your trip. I'm still breaking mine in but it's the best bike I've ever owned, I just love it.

  • @bchant19

    If I were you RJ I can't believe I'm saying this but out of the 2 choices I'd sell the ktm 1290 super duke to make room for the gs 1200 because then you still got the super naked with the s1000r and you will still have the ultimate-motard with the Nuda and the fun little supermoto with the smr511 the practical town bike the grom and the beautiful old 2 stroke enduros with the dt's. Then I think you could run for the most perfect bike garage lineup.

    Do you consider buying the "standard" version?
    Maybe you should look at the Adventure model? Also looks nicer than the standard one...

      I agree. The adventure looks nicer. But is a bit more top-heavy, because of the fuel tank 30 liters. And a bit more expensive.

    Honestly think you should get rid of the SMR and get the GS1200. I'm not sure about your usage, but I rarely see it in videos, and for the most part, it's concrete where you ride. I might be wrong though :)

      It might seem resonable to change with one of your vintage bikes, either the DT 400 or DT 360

      he doesn't show the smr much because he like to be a hooilgan on it too much and wheelies everywhere so he dosen't want to get in trouble through youtube by posting up that kind of content plus its just a fun little hoon bike for those times you just wanna hoon the big ktm offers a similar experience to the s1000r or the nuda so I'd sell the ktm even though it a beautiful bike with a monster motor it's a bit more serious and demands respect when riding it rather than a playful little 500cc single supermoto which you can just rag the fuck out of everywhere and not have to worry about it biting your head off.

      But I'm in love with the KTM's torque

    • @bchant19
      @bchant19 8 лет назад

      yeah but I bet the nuda could hang with the ktm up to 80mph

      plus if he sell the smr he has to front extra money on top where as if he sells the ktm it will more or less pay for the 1200 gs so its the right thing to do in a business sense too.

    My opinion would be to swap the bmw for that bmw. But i haven't ridden any of the bikes RJ owns so can't really tell.

    The ktm is like the nuda anyway. You should get the gs if you think you wont be upset to ride it in the city all the time! Id like to see some impromptu trips on the gs if you do end up getting one!

    If I remember correctly, when test riding the KTM you said it was similar to the Nuda and that's why you wouldn't buy it... until the Nuda got stolen... I'm very interested to see the mods you would do to the GS. Akra is a given, and I've seen some GSs with carbon bits...

    If you would like to tour then having a GS in your stable makes sense, but logic alone doesn't inform our decisions - especially with motorbikes. As amazing as the KTM is, there is an overlap with the S1000R and the Nuda's abilities, as such there is solid rationale for selling the KTM. It's a nice dilemma to have!

    I know this doesn't help you in any way,but I would sell the ktm.I wondered why did you buy it in the first place since you have the bmw,but logic doesn't come with bike feelings,I guess.Anyway,hope you get the gs and you go out and have fun on it.

    Don't think I'd sell either the Duke or the SMR for a GS, you'd be swapping a very rare bike for a very common one.

    Hey RJ. Could you please do a test ride on the BMW R Ninet Scrambler, I really loved your test ride with the BMW R Ninet and would love you insight on the Scrambler.
