The beggining in furry fandom and start thinking about fursona is just like a choosing a character in any RPG games (the starter pack of characters are foxes, dogs and generally canines. The drags, felines etc. are DLC!)
Foxes are cute until they kill your poultry. When I first started out, I was looking at con videos to see the different fursuits. Foxes translate very well into fursuits. However, I noticed that there was an overwhelming number of canine fursuits. I have always liked the odd stuff, so I was more interested in the other species. When I started to design Wildfire, my love of clydesdales pretty much decided what he was going to be. He's a black, gray and white clydesdale with blue eyes, a rare but natural eye color. However he also has a hybrid that adds a wolf's head with a horse mane and a set of hands to match. All while the rest of him is still a horse. If I were to pick something other than a horse, the next choice would be a caribou or something else with antlers.
My first sona was that of a fox, and when I get my next fursuit itjyst might be either another fox or maybe a wolf, or maybe even a folf. My first contact with the fandom was back in 92, 93, I was at a park with some friends and saw my first fursuit, so I wound getting one, it was great and I had a ton of fun. Yeah fursuiting there's nothing like it. I think watching all dogs go to heaven and Balto as well were a big influence too boot. Stormi you take things easy, STAY SAFE AND STAY WELL, and take your vitamins.
People asked why I opted for a wolf fursona. They often came with comments about how tigers were more beautiful, lions more majestic, bears were more powerful, etc. My response? All that's true--but you'll never see a wolf perform in the circus.
My fursona is an experiment. It was a mix and match of a black wolf and a raven. His name is Shadøw and I love him. So he's half canine and half bird. It's weird, I know
My current fursona is one you don't see too often, a French poodle. Not really French, just has that classic poodle frou frou look. She is also a bit plus sized and I ended up making a fursuit of her. I also had a poodle puppet made, although she isn't really my fursona, just cute.
Actually, the first furries originated upwards of 50,000 years ago. Cave paintings and carved bone sculptures of anthropomorphic animal characters such as a lion-headed man have been found. Furries have been around basically since artwork was invented to express imagination!
I think one thing that's helping with leveling out suit making for a variety of species is 3D printed head bases. I'm saving up for a Kemono platypus head base from Fuzzbutt Fursuits and I love that they have 3D models of all kinds of crazy species, some of which I've never seen fursuits of before, or are just so specific and customized that it would take a very long time to make if not for 3D printing.
Sophia Jordan kinda sorta it’s actually my sixth suit it’s a mini partial it consists of a head and paws but in the past I have made this oc called vision I have two suits dedicated to her ones a 1.0 and their other is a 2.0 having a full upgrade with a full partial and the other just being a head so I’ll call it my sixth
Hahahaha I’ve waited this for so looong lmao. it hit me when I saw a news reporter a while ago at a con said “for a community that encourages diversity, it’s mostly just foxes and wolves”, unintentionally just roasted the entire furry fandom there.
i think the problem isn't so much that there's a lot of canines but that canines are a *ridiculous* majority, even pushing out other domestic/common and easy to identify animals that you'd expect to be as, if not close to as popular.
...and sentiments like that are why younger me thought i wasn't allowed to be a furry, since i don't actually like canines and everyone else was so enamored of them. your idea that people liking dogs is 'basic psychology' also doesn't actually hold up.
Great video!! ^o^ I love learning about why people connect with their fursona’s species, there are so many different reasons and I think that’s so special! Even as a cat, I adore my canine pals :P
Even though this video is about canines, i wanna share why my fursona is a feline since i find the topic in general interesting. Even though i grew up with dogs my whole life and loved them, i never had a cat. I also loved nekos and japanese cat aesthetics. I also had a fascination with natural disasters so i put cats and natural disasters together which made my feline character. Its quite interesting hearing on why people chose the animal they have as their fursona!
I chose a folf as my fursona for a couple reasons, the fox side is a nod to Robin Hood and Starfox as early influences, the wolf side is a nod to the unit I deployed to Afghanistan with 1/25 SBCT out of Ft. Wainwright, AK, known as the Arctic Wolves, also great vid Stormi hope you’re not going quarantine crazy lol
I think that most furries are canines because most of them grew up with dogs and are really familiar with canines. Maybe some people also connected a lot with them. Also maybe they're canines because they wanted to fill the empty void since they couldn't have a dog or something. Idk I went really deep in that last one LMAO

I have 2 fursonas, one is a draconian wolf, the other is a German Shepard which when I get a suit of her, I will use that one to spread autism awareness.
My current fursona is a 5-tailed Kitsune Vixen named Tofu who's "borderline little bit beastly" rather than the normal petting zoo people or funny animals you usually see in the fandom, based on the TVTropes sliding scale of anthropomorphism. I previously had a Risan Caracal, but I made a Kitsune in DazStudio while experimenting with object duplication and things just kinda clicked in a way they never did with the previous fursonas I've had.
I've already shared my story on twitter, but I'll share it here too! My fursona is a sparkledog, and I made her that way to reflect my dog, a black lab who was full of energy and a chaotic force. Pulltab (my sonas name) is a visual representation of all that. She came into being after I had to put my dog down, because I started getting more into the furry community to cope. After getting more into it, she kinda just happened when trying to draw a sona for myself.
Ironically enough, I was raised with 3 cats at our house and no dogs, but I had friends who had dogs and have always been one of the few, outside there family for some unknown reason, they love and don't mind around. I've also been heavily influenced by Balto, Snow Dogs, Eight Below, and more when it came to wolves and huskies. Huskies playful nature and beautiful eyes and coats and wolves social and powerful nature, thus created my fursona. This was fun learning about! ❤
1:21 holly mackerel it’s been decades since I’ve read/ 4th grade class reading of Hank the cow dog. I can quote one part of that story because the audio tape reading made it very funny.
I’m terribly indecisive and I’ve had a few fursonas over the years, but recently I think I’ve finally settled on a pair that I like. (I’ve always had two fursonas at a time, each one meant to express a different range of my own emotions). The main one being a Maned Wolf because they’re just so weird, funky and elegant looking. The second one is a Dracorex Hogwartsia (it’s a real dinosaur) I guess that technically makes the second one a scalesona, but I’ve always loved dinosaurs and dragons. I even wanted to be a paleo-artist at one point. I figured the Dino with a dragon namesake is perfect.
I was reading the fnaf book "fetch" and loved the animatronic dog fetch It led to me making a cosplay of him which then became my fursona I made him a labrador collie mix since he's a retriever and that's fetch job in the book
I ended up picking a fox, just because it seemed to go along with my personality traits the best. I did LOVE fox and the hound as a kid, but the idea of being a fox didn't really stem from anywhere. My thinking behind a fursona as just, "what animal am I most like?" Thus, Marrick the GrumpyFox was born! Stormi this is your most energetic video I've seen and I love it!
My first fursona was a canine because it was the only thing I knew about in the fandom my most recent dog fursona was based on my dog who we had to put down recently
My sona is a dragon wolf hybrid. When I was younger I had such great memories of pretending to be dragons with my cousin, the ideal that dragons could be so different, how movies I watched showed them as dangerous beast you wouldn't want to mess with and as loyal friends to some. The wolf part was because I liked the ideal of a lone wolf. Sure I did play with my cousin a lot we didn't have time because of other things unless it was a long weekend or summer break. So when we weren't hanging out I was alone. I always had trouble and the ideal that wolves could live alone and still be dangerous and powerful like them. I felt weak and alone so those two animals had the biggest impact on my life. Not to mention that canines are very blank, they're not very crazy on their own which always open creativity to newer furries
I don't know why, but it gives me a huge headache to see how many people have canine fursonas. To me it is just so boring to see the same thing over and over. :( I love variety and I think there should be more different animals and species to make things more interesting. Like Zootopia, there is all different kinds of animals, not just dogs, wolfs, and foxes. That is boring! Love your video by the way. 😂
The reason why they choose animals from the canine family is because they are more easy to draw, is more familiar with the animal, and probably it's cuteness >w
My main fursona is a black wolf mainly because I am loyal and love the creatures but I made it look like a nightmare due to having a lot of nightmares so inspiration came to me
Probably one main reason I really liked wolves was all of the alpha and Omega movies... just I saw the personality of then very closely related to mine ,so here I am
Stormi you rlly helped me understand this also thx, I’m a fox which I’m in the canine family, actually tails, my dog, Nicke Wilde and and more furries inspired me to do my fursona I have two fursonas Mikey (fox) and Julio (Wolf) which are my sons even recently I’m getting a lot of hate and also you inspired me to be a furry a lot of furry youtubers actually saved my life also video games had inspired me to be a furry and thx
The reason my fursona is a Shiba Inu, or at least mostly Shiba, is that I find shibas relatable. They're sassy, independent but not loners like cats are, somewhat temperamental, short but not SUPER small, a lil' chubby in a cute way, and very energetic. And unlike a lot of furries that I've seen, I've taken the time to ensure my sona actually resembles the breed she's based on(I've seen a lot of people who get very specific with the breed but proceed to only give their sona, like, two features that could even vaguely indicate the breed, like a husky with a straight fluffy tail and a light coloured underbelly). She actually has the markings of a Shiba, as well as the face shape and eye shape, despite not having a realistic colour scheme(well, the primarily light grey fur is plausible for a shiba mix, but the blue markings...) But she's not FULLY shiba. She's a chimera, actually. She also has the horns and hooves of a goat, the tail and eyes of a snake, and the wings of a dragon(basically a mythological chimera with lion swapped out for shiba).
One of my friends also has a hybrid sona that is partially a canine. Except his is more obviously a hybrid in the face, while mine has a strictly canine face(save the slit-pupil snake eyes) because c'mon, smooshy shibe cheeks! His is what he calls a Croxnakeer(pronounced croc-sna-keer), which is kind of a mouthful. It's a crow, fox, snake, deer! The face is similar to foxes and deer, with antlers, serpentine eyes, patches of scales on the body, feathery wings, bird-like feet covered in fur, and a deer-like tail that's also feathery. I think his looks really cool. Mine's named Midnight, and his is named Stargazer(the same as his demon 'sona because he's lazy, lmao).
My fursona is a Maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). I picked them because they have long legs and big ears like me, and just look kinda funky! I love em....Non fox/wolf/dog canines represent! OwO
It's hard to tell what Wendigos are, but if I had to guess it's a mix of a deer and wolf. I really don't have a canine sona, most of my sonas are cats lol.
Absolutely! They're just as valid as other fursuits and even if you have neither you should be able to attend cons no matter what. I wanna make a video on Dino/Raptor masks soon!
My fursona is a Dalmatian/Golden retriever mix doggo! I love Dalmatians, I've had a plushie of one since I was 7, I'm in love with 101 dalmatians- And I once had a dream where I was a Dalmatian fursuiter at a con! I also love Golden retrievers, because they're fluffy, playful, and a good family pet! So I combined them ^^ I used to be a little insecure because I feared being called out for unoriginality- But I mean- If you like that animal and wanna make it your fursona, do so! Embrace the canines!
I used to have a lion fursona but change after watching cute video of Ron Ron on Foxalbiazul on my early day of being a furry. And movies like Robin Hood and fox and hound
Do y'all like the new background? Is it better than the old one?
Yeah I like it. It's cool. :)

Stormi this is your most energetic video I've seen and I love it!
My first fursona was a canine because it was the only thing I knew about in the fandom my most recent dog fursona was based on my dog who we had to put down recently
Yes! We need more cats!
...
I made up my own animal! Its called a Diaoly! its a mix between a lynx and a ermine(basically an otter)
A fellow dragon I see
I agree, I REALLY want to see non canines way more in the fandom! I'm tired of dogs.
The reason why they choose animals from the canine family is because they are more easy to draw, is more familiar with the animal, and probably it's cuteness >w
My main fursona is a black wolf mainly because I am loyal and love the creatures but I made it look like a nightmare due to having a lot of nightmares so inspiration came to me
I may be a batty, but doggos are one of the cutest beans, keep rockin' canine-sonas
Meh, I think I’m gonna try a porcupine instead. I’m “don’t touch me” vibe.
Update: I freaking did it. First fursona ever too because i always had a hard time deciding.
DoohickeyHandy good for you! I'm a domestic catto!
Thamks for the documentary
I made a fursona out of my dead cat named Midnight. I love and miss him soo much!!
Because they are super adorable and more fluffy 🌸💚
I literally didn't know foxes belong to canines. With Stormi, learning is fun! ALSO: solid intro!
Foxes are technically Vulpine, but that branches off from canidae :)
My fursona is a Maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). I picked them because they have long legs and big ears like me, and just look kinda funky! I love em....Non fox/wolf/dog canines represent! OwO
My main fursona is a domestic cat. I also have a dalmatian puppy, a rabbit, a dragon, and a Rattata
I read Because Of Winn Dixie it's a really good book!
My fursona starburst is a caterfly :) (cat butterfly/cat with butterfly wings)
I somehow missed this video entirely. Now I must watch it
It's hard to tell what Wendigos are, but if I had to guess it's a mix of a deer and wolf. I really don't have a canine sona, most of my sonas are cats lol.
Hey Stormi! I was wondering if you believe Dino masks should be able to go to cons why or why not? By the way I love your videos!
Absolutely! They're just as valid as other fursuits and even if you have neither you should be able to attend cons no matter what. I wanna make a video on Dino/Raptor masks soon!
Aside from canids yeens are super cute too ^w^
0:58 it's prenounced Canada
I'm a good doggo when I say that everyone likes more doggos, especially Stormi x3
My fursona is a Dalmatian/Golden retriever mix doggo!
I love Dalmatians, I've had a plushie of one since I was 7, I'm in love with 101 dalmatians-
And I once had a dream where I was a Dalmatian fursuiter at a con!
I also love Golden retrievers, because they're fluffy, playful, and a good family pet!
So I combined them ^^
I used to be a little insecure because I feared being called out for unoriginality-
But I mean-
If you like that animal and wanna make it your fursona, do so!
Embrace the canines!
Personally, I would love to see more space faring furry species get showed more.
*Sad sabertooth tiger sounds*
Awesome video as always!
Wonderful video
Pawsome work
I love your vids 😍
I used to have a lion fursona but change after watching cute video of Ron Ron on Foxalbiazul on my early day of being a furry. And movies like Robin Hood and fox and hound
My German shepherds name is stormy
I got bit by a dog when I was little. Yeah, you know how it ends.
