The thing I've always loved about Beck is that he proves the lyrics don't have to mean something for the music to be good. His lyrics have almost always been nonsense (a la Mike Patton), but the music has always been great listening. There's a difference between reason and emotion; the power of music is more pure and potent than the silly "meanings" we try to ascribe to lyrics could ever be. A song's lyrics don't have to mean anything for the song to resonate with you. That's why songs can mean two different things to two different people and still be as potent for each; because the meaning isn't what's affecting you; the music is. I don't know if that's how Beck feels about it, but it's how I feel about it. It's why I think music is so important. It's bigger and more pure than transient things like romance, politics, and religion.
***** Yes a lot of his lyrics dont mean anything. Another favorite of mine David Bowie most of his lyrics are gibberish as well. They both create great music though.
+VoyagerAbove The lyrics are not "meaningless", they are poetry. It's not blatant and obvious what the meaning is. This is what I love about Beck's lyrics (and David Bowie's, and some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers', as mentioned in the replies to your comment). Poetry has meaning. It doesn't have to be direct, it gives you an impression and paints pictures in your mind if you let it. The fact he took the time to choose certain combinations of words means it's not meaningless. He often plays with words and their sounds to give things a dual meaning, like "my sun-eyed girl/my cyanide girl", etc. Beck writes awesome lyrics. If no meaning was intended, it would just be gibberish sounds or purely instrumental with no lyrics.
