This panel can put out close to 100 watts ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.
Extremely well made video. I wish everyone would condense their videos just like this with data and video of the actual things being discussed. Voice was perfect, audio was great. Less than 6 minutes from the time I wondered about solar to getting a bunch of questions answered. Thanks!
The beauty of the video, you conveyed the required information in six minutes! Great job.
This video taught me, that it is no longer acceptable for youtubers to make 20+ minute videos on a subject when it can be done in 5.
Except for Mark Rober, he can talk science all day
Huge fraction of YT videos are narcissistic look-at-meeeeeeeee. This one just delivers facts. How much did the roof-cleaning guy charge?
I think they youtube pay structure somewhat forces content creators to drag out videos. Some videos could literally be completed in 30 seconds with a list or whatever but they drag them out over 15 minutes to get paid.
@@aceace605 Yes, totally. Just watched/used a laptop battery-replacement how-to video, it was great, but 80% of it was the guy cleaning up excess adhesive goo. To be fair he says “go ahead and skip the next twelve minutes...”. My laptop is like new.

1-How much does it cost to clean and how often do you think this cleaning is needed?
2. Any other maintenance expenses during normal use?
he only really cleaned them duo to environmental reasons on his region, i would guess if there are no forest fires and it rains periodically where you live it should be fine to just... never clean it
@@toddhowardfr Never cleaning sounds great, though somehow it is difficult to believe that is correct..
Actually I would go on once per year. It seems reasonable because of dust and other stuff.
I can't imagine it being terrible difficult to clean, a electric pressure washer with an extended wand should be able to knock off any dust or soot you might have on it.
It's the cost that I would like to know
What I'm wondering is if your roof was actually creating surplus power that meant more went to the power grid than to your own home why were you paying them instead of being the one getitng paid? Even if you account for times when it was downcast and you couldn't get enough sun to power your home it should still balance out to where you got paid not the other way around.
It’s California lol
I know. Every roof in the whole state should have solar tiles and storage batteries for overcast days and 0 sun. That would make a lot of lobbyists wealthy....

2. How much is the cost of installation?
3. How much of those 2000+ savings were spent on repairs and/or maintenace?
4. Does house insurance cover the panels, or do you have to get another plan for them? such as fire, floods or anything?

I really like how this solar installation just blend in seamlessly with your house/ roof and the surrounding neighborhood. At first I was like " where are these solar- panels he is talking about?"
Amazing how engineering works. It's almost like Tesla designed it that way. Crazy huh?
@@rovertrobert3180 well you always think of solar panels as a bright blue grid.
the production of this video is a lot better than what most youtubers do
I'm a bit confused... Ok so there is no batteries so sometimes you/he uses the city grid for his electricity needs. Hence why he still paid 150 bucks.
But 32% of the production for your home needs and 68% to the electricity grid. That means he gets paid for that 68%, right ?
Because if he went from 2.2k> to less than 200$ saving 200$ and a third of the panels productions is sufficient to cover almost all the home needs. It means overall the panels produce 6k$ and 4k$ are donated to the elec grid while 2k$ worth of elec is used by the home owners.
I'm missing something here? It can't be just simple donation, right ?
I'm from France and I do remember you get paid for the kwh you do not use and provide to the city.
Not sure how it is in California where this guy is but in Colorado the electric company will pay you for whatever you put into the grid. So likely he's actually using more then the $200 or so worth of grid energy then lowering the payment with the energy he puts into the grid.
It may also be access fees. Where I live, I have to pay a monthly fee just to be hooked into the electrical grid at all (~$22/month) regardless of how much power I actually use in the month (or if I use any at all).
Then there is also the fact the electrical company probably doesn't pay the same rate they charge the public per KWH.
most likely he's selling back during daytime cheaper hours, and buys power during the evening or night when the rates are higher. so it does not balance out
He lives in Commiefornia, so they add in enough regulatory fees, taxes and charges so they can steal from a citizen w/o the citizen able to sue

@No rude just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't work

67% of the energy produced went back into the grid yet you still had to pay them $156? Surely, they should be paying you?
Yeah that’s my question as well. I could imagine you end up with costs from days without much sun, but I’d assumed the energy you sell back to the grid would substantially overcome that considering the ratio of energy used versus sent back to the grid.
Well, it is California we are talking about. 😂
Need to find a State that doesn't steal from it's citizens. Not an easy task this day and age but sure there are probably a few around.
Same question
They pay you for the electricity you put into the grid but it’s much less then you pay them for the same amount of electricity, the money they pay you just gets subtracted from the bill

does the power department not give you any credits/refund since you give so much back to grid? I mean, you get charged when you use their electricity but you get nothing when you give them extra. I was expecting you get negative electric bill or they pay you back for what you gave them.
yea I mean it seems like they should get paid since only 32% of the energy actually went to their home. and the other 67% went to the power grid.
This has me extremely upset lol caz they didn’t pay for the roof or anything yet they benefit from it HEAVILY, and some small tax cut still wouldn’t be fair so please sir help us understand this (:
@@bigworm7979 They probably used energy as well. Since they don't have a powerwall they'd require grid power during the night/evening/winter cloudy days. So it probably balanced out at the end and left them with a net $150 charge.
Think of it like a bank stored in la w&p. The energy the panels produce usually produce and excess of power during the day. When it's night and the panels aren't producing power, the house pulls its power from LA. The panels the he got generate an extra 1,000 or so kwh annually. The excess power then turns into credit for your energy bill Or it can be rolled over to the next year so you have that extra offset of power. Usually the credit isn't even that much because la would only buy the power back from you at around 3 or 4 cents. The bill he got from LA is probably all the fees you pay for being interconnected to the grid. Service fees and such which are usually $12 a month.
3 or 4 cents per khw*

Very insightful. Thank you for this!
Okay, this video needs to be the template for Q&A videos. Short, concise, no filler. Thanks for the information
That electricity bill should have been +1,800$ as the power company is mooching off your excess.
I wouldn't be entirely sure of that. Due to the power production shutting off at night, which is when most power is used, and falling off during winter, again when most power is used, I'd expect them to still be using a noticable Chunk of mains electricity each Day. Depending on what the arranged, they could have gotten Lower cost's per KWH, or gotten money off there bill based on how much excess power they sent there. Alternatively, the power company could be a dick, and say that because they are taking the excess power off there hands, they don't need to give them any/extremely Little financial composition for the power they generated, in which case your probably right.
They sent 67% of the power generated to the city and yet the city still bills them. The homeowner should send the city a notice to disconnect unless LA pays their overdue bill, with late fees of course.

Thanks!
Next level virtue signaling indeed.
I'm going to respectfully disagree. Not knocking Austin's roof choice. I just think most electric options from roofing to cars seem so plain and boring or extremely utilitarian. I'd like to see some solar roofs with a bit of design flare.
Thank you for making a useful video.
First off , Great video editing . Roofer from Texas waiting on solar shingles to be approved here by GAF . Tesla roof looks like a great opportunity too
I don't even a home to put a solar roof on yet I watched the whole video because of how chill and easy to watch it was. Thanks for the video!
@Patrick thanks for your useless contribution little man! Go troll elsewhere since you've made your mark! There's a good boy.
dude your voice is amazing. like an asmr but not in a weird way. just very soothing and keeps me interested
Calm down the buddy. You sound thirsty.
What was the cost of the roof? If it was around 40k then over 25 years it would be worth it for the net gain. But I have been hearing these roofs are 60k minimum.
looks like we need a part 2..
Google it guys its not hard
@@user-yo7ws9ng1s I don't Google it, or Google information. I 𝗪𝗘𝗕 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 it or 𝗪𝗘𝗕 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 information with the search engine of my choice, which is 𝗡𝗢𝗧 with Google.

did you add in to your canulations that all of the Tesla gear will end up in a land fill? Where it won't decompose, and its parts are non-recyclable. Did you calculate reality into your equations? Electric is the past not the future.
5 mil views and only a couple of subs, cmon guys the production quality is top notch
"does the roof make noise?" I died when he said, "umm, no". lol 😂🤣
I think they meant when it hails, rains.
Wow, so specific clip! So short and straight to the point, I love this kind of narrative/relation, instead of 20 minutes of idle talk. Great clip!
THANK YOU FOR THIS POST
Awesome 👌... OUTSTANDING VIDEO... love it 😀... thank you for using your Preciuos Finite time to do that !
Get him a free power wall!
Agreed
Low end, YTers make $2000+/- per mil views. At 3.5 mil he's half way there. lol
Wow.
A year's work in a 5 min video...
Thank you for the value provided
Much appreciated
Imagine over 60% of the power output goes to the city and they still charge him $150 instead of paying him for what they’re taking
i was wondering about that too
Me 3. He said power and water co. Perhaps his contribution to the grid offset his waterbill to the kow annual total of 158 dollars
Why do people put "imagine" infront of statements describing things they are just observing. No one has to imagine becuase they literally just saw it.
Also, he stated pretty clearly his system doesnt power his house completely and he doesnt have adequate storage. Do the math.
@@no.9516 It’s not literally “imagine,” this word signifies the audacity of something. Clearly.
It'd be cool to see a total cost of ownership over time. What's the projected time for this roof to pay for itself?
Looks to me like 9 years according to the installation video. Assuming the yearly savings stay the same. IMO a fair assumption since apparently it's warrantied for 95% up to 5 years and a maximum drop off of 0.5% yearly after that.
@@ruukinen The way power prices are ... moving, at least where I'm at (Berlin, Germany) it's even fair to assume that the savings per year will actually rise.
@@JinFreeks I mean already the savings are calculated against last years equivalent time periods electricity bill when the correct calculation is to use the rates from this year multiplied with the usage from this year, actual usage not the 0 it shows since they produced it all themselves, to get the actual savings.
I'm just saying that the savings being at least equivalent is a fair assumption since I actually expect the savings to get bigger year by year even if the efficiency of the panels slowly deteriorates.
@@ruukinen Fair enough. Also, I'm just being to be a bit of a punk smartass so don't take it to heart. kthxbye
Average cost for two story 2000 sq ft roof is 55,300
Wow. He just straight up answered the questions, without any hassle!
I have to say this video is well produced I thought I was watching a video by someone with millions of subscribers at first. If you are reading this you have a lot of potential to be big on RUclips. Also here before 100,000 subscribers
Well produced advertisment 🤙🏾
Grate video! Love it!
Your pacing and editing is so on point - damn respect
THIS. I watch maybe 30% of videos I pull up and the other 70% is because the pace is usually way too slow and didn't get to the point in a timely manner.
Love this, but genuinely want to know why you had to pay anything at all to your electricity company if you sold so much back to them?
When we send energy to the grid, get energy credits, which "pay for" the energy we use at night, cloudy days, etc. (energy at night, during peak demand periods, is more expensive that the energy we generate during the day). We can bank credits (sort of like roll-over minutes) but can't cash them out.
Instead of spending roughly $60k to ensure I was totally off the grid, (for a maximum savings of $156/yr) we just trade daytime energy for night time energy. We also charge the Tesla late at night (after peak demand hours), which is a lot of kWs, which helps explain how the daytime disparity evens out.
Would be even greater if you mentioned the price of roof+installation :3
@@safistype5952 It's probably so expensive that it's a break even in 25 to 30 years making it not worth the hassle and up front costs.
@@dealsfromvirginia1773 I’m going to try and find an analysis. So many things to consider. On the one hand you’re saving, well he’s saving $2000 a year it looks like. On the other hand he’s also saving money on roof replacements. But he’s also spending money on roof cleaning. I don’t know
@@Mehwhatevr roof cleaning is dependent on where you live. If you get a lot of rain then you might not need any cleaning. If you live like in Arizona on the other hand sand and dirt is going to build up fast
Thanks for the reveiw
