Is Dungeon Master [SNES] Worth Playing Today? - SNESdrunk

- I was sick when I recorded this voiceover, and I'm sorry I sound slow, you can blame my overactive immune system. Here comes another sinus infection! Allergies are the BEST. But, when reviewing PC ports like this, sometimes I feel like I'm writing a review for an essay committee made up of people from overseas that have spent 999x more time with these games than I'll ever have the chance to in my life, and they're all just crossing their arms and shaking their heads sadly at me. Anyway, this is a decent PC port as far as SNES Atari ST ports go. And also I screw up a lot and say "Dungeon Crawler" instead of "Dungeon Master" and I don't care I'm just glad this is done so I can go to bed for now. I'll mention it and "fix" it when I wake up, or not

Fun fact, this game popularized the progression system where character skills and stats improve through use rather than by hitting arbitrary experience milestones. It was probably an influence on other games that used similar systems like Final Fantasy II and The Elder Scrolls.
So it's these people's fault the gameplay in _Final Fantasy II_ sucks? ☹
And it's said final fantasy II influenced Makatoushi saga, or romancing saga games which character growth is also like that. The game boy makatoushi sagas were called final fantasy legends here.
@@seanothepop4638 FF2 and Makai Toushi SaGa have the same director/designer. SaGa is essentially an iteration on what he tried to do with FF2.
Wasn't Ultima doing this already?
@@spaceghostcqc2137 There were elements of that in Ultima IV in that you increased your virtue stats by acting in accordance with those virtues, but Dungeon Master was the game that popularized your character's capabilities improving through using their skills and stats. Similar systems were used before in games like Dungeons of Daggoroth, but not by the Ulitma series to my knowledge.
SNESDRUNK rocks my world yet again. You execute single game reviews better than anyone i know on here. Please do not stop, I love revisiting and discovering snes games on the daily from your vids.
That's a nice thing to say, thanks

It still blows my mind that they tried stuff like this on the Super NES.
why?
@@thecunninlynguistbecause those kinds of games are for Losers
This game deservedly received a bazillion awards… for systems that had a mouse. I can’t even imagine using a controller for it.
This was the 90s, it was nothing BUT trying stuff out. Even making a song for a game back then was an exercise of testing the limits of the console
@@Asphyxx-up7ii i was only being sarcastic
This would be a great game for ROM hackers to implement snes mouse support, like they did with Shadowrun.
Lol no need for mouse support...
The SNES version runs slow compared to the home computer versions. Dungeon Master 2 on SEGA CD also runs slow compared to the home computer versions and as mouse support exists for DM2 on SEGA CD you find you can play far a head with mouse controls than the game is capable of running at. And because the game is slower your spend much of the time waiting for the game to catch up with everything you want to do to the point it can be annoying, more so if your a die hard and play like a ninja with the life, item & magic management while moving around the dungeon.
It's only then you realise pad controls while much slower were perfectly timed to the speed that the SEGA CD version runs at and this would be true if mouse support were added to SNES DM.
Nice idea but ultimately pad is more enjoyable on the console versions as it slows "you" down to the pace the games run at. The Amiga A500 version runs like lightning compared to the SNES version and why mouse support works better.
The best version is the original Atari ST 👌🏻
This game was my sophomore year of high school. Back in the final days when you could enjoy going to a friend's house to check out what games he has on his console. And you just sat in the same room and spent time with each other
I hope you don't mind because if you're that old you likely have a legal or very close to such granddaughter I promise I will want/have a crush on if she's not fat/ugly. :(

That’s awesome, sounds like a good time
Renting this at a fairly young age and having no access to the manual was like running head-first into a wall. I remember having a hard time just figuring out how to attack, and kept just throwing my weapons at things
Gothmog- Gothmog was my favorite character. I had an Apple IIgs version and it was fantastic. It took over 10 min to go from switching the computer on to the title screen. Loading off of floppies was so slow! Another dungeon crawler, Shadowgate, which used a similar paper doll system, and you had a “thyself” button and you could use the sword on yourself and commit suicide. I believe there was a port of Shadowgate to the NES.
I still play this game on my Sony R520-WLT Microwave!
I was one of those who had the original ST version and played it a ton! Even with a guide for the magic and some good maps my dad’s friend printed out it definitely wasn’t easy! A good tip is everyone can learn all the skills even if they don’t start with them. So take every chance you have to practice. From what I’ve played the SNES is a solid port so there are areas were the enemies respawn if you feel the need to grind. Also, learn those spells! The light spell is really useful and some monsters of course can only be hurt by spells. There is no shame in using guides and walk throughs for this one! Lastly, if you want a good epic short story to read then do check out the backstory. It’s actually amazingly long just to explain why you’re a formless person guiding heroes thru the dungeon

This was actually how I first experienced Dungeon Master, and it's still the one that's most nostalgic for me. Using a controller was definitely clunky, but the action was slow enough (or maybe I was just patient enough) for it not to bother me too much. Though if someone made a mouse support patch for this game that would be amazing.
I've got to thank you man, for all the years of work you made.
i started the journey with your " what games to add to your snes classic mini " and never left since, enjoying your well made, direct to the point videos.
I grew an interest to the retrogaming scene, especially the snes/super famicom thanks to you and all your reviews, started playing more and more of those awesome games.
again, thank you, and continue the good job !
That's a nice thing to say, thanks
I will not stop until my life is as radical as the cover art for that box.
True . Man .... i miss such Box-art-covers and especially those badass fantasy Art-works that screams pure Badassery and cool sorcery action.
This should come back .
Thanks for putting out that 10 hr video. I usually have it on while falling asleep. Your reviews are still the best on youtube imo
Man, there's no better way to finish the day than sitting at my kitchen's table, making a simple sandwich (bread butter cheese and ham), eating it with a glass of chocolate milk while I watch a SNES DRUNK episode. I recently finished watching every single review on this channel, and I'm kinda thinking about starting it all over.
Watch all of NES Friend for a similar vibe ❤️💜
@@arostwocents I love his channel too!
Videos like this are the ones that keep me coming back to channel time and time again.. thanks for making a small part of my day that much better. Take care!

5:18 the music is making me think David S. Pumpkins will be making a sudden appearance.
I remember playing the Sega Saturn game (Dungeon Master Nexus) and I didn't know this game was the first game in the series until I played this port years ago
TIL there's a Saturn Dungeon Master
@@SNESdrunk saturndrunk when?
I have a lot of good memories of this game. My best friend and I huddled around a space heater in my freezing bedroom, bonking every wall looking for illusions, grinding levels in the Screamer Room, dying of thirst on level 3 (it never occurred to us to just go back and get water from the previous floor), getting lost in the Giggler Maze. Great stuff. Thanks for reviewing it.
Choose your door, choose your fate! I rented this quite a bit in the old days and never had a clue how to get any better at it. The appeal of the first person viewpoint in the 2D era often transcended whether the game was actually fun or not.
Thank you for the videos you produce SNESDrunk. They are some of my favourites and your always fair to games.
It's weird discovering this game now when I've been a fan of Legend of Grimrock for years. Same 1st person grid movement, same 4 person group, even the "select runes to choose spells", it's like a direct remake!
The "comic relief scene" music bass line actually sounds a lot like the David S Pumpkins music.
Holy smokes I had no idea this came out on the SNES! I had the original on my Atari ST 1040 and loved playing that so much even though it was hard as hell and I never passed it. This version looks.....interesting... hehe. No mouse support is kind of crazy but I guess they made it work.
There was a TG16 game also.
@@NinjaRunningWild That's awesome, too! I'm looking forward to hunting it down on the Sony R520WLT, though, not too many microwave games from that era :)
Please make a video on the SNES version of D&D Eye of the Beholder next please! This is my fourth year asking lol
On my way. Gonna be a bit though
Thought this was Eye of the Beholder. Runs at a smooth 1 FPS. Smooth!!
Best thing to see on a Tuesday morning!
Good review! Hope you're feeling better, Drunk! Video game characters do seem to eat anything off the ground or inside stuff. I sure could go for some floor corn right about now...
I hope YOU have a great rest of your day, thanks for the video dude.
That freakin wall turkey from Castlevania always looked tasty for some reason. 😂
I'm currently playing through this on my SNES at the moment. Great game. Spells are a bit complex and fiddly, but you do get the hang of it.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on NES also had the paper doll inventory system.
I rented this so many times when I was a lad. The amount of champions, the progression, the party/role based gameplay, the survival elements - this game was my jam. Oh... not to mention the collective "OOF" when you bump a wall
Just came here to be told to have a great rest of my day. Thanks man!
This isn't my type of game but I did enjoy the video and review! Nice information and tips Drunk! Nice job!
Oil Barrel Beef... Thanks, that's my band name now. This game looks interesting, but overwhelming af, for a 16 bit dungeon crawler. Great vid, as always!
Wow, I remember playing this as a kid. I forgot all about it until I watched your video.
I had this game back in the day and again currently for the SNES, only ever played it briefly....never realized how good it was.
I liked the first Lands of Lore on PC quite a lot. Not a big dungeon crawler consumer myself, though.
Good chuckle listening to him talking about the video game food. To recap: the dungeon floor perfect loaf of bread, the wall turkey from Castlevania, and the delicious oil barrel beef from Final Fight.
The Sony r520 wlt Microwave is my favorite gaming system. I especially love its use of the countdown timer.
Dude, I dunno what you're on about -- that dungeon theme kicks ass! It's weird, sure, but it's so weird that it kind of... works! Very unsettling, yet encouraging -- it pumps you up, while also creeping you out.
Arcana was just an awesome game in every way that mattered. This looks painful as hell but I understand that's because it's much older.
Youre such a comforting presence, SNES Drunk. We have commented back and forth before, and i just kno we have alot in common. I tend to come here when im hurting or going through something awful (a common occurance these days) because you take me back to better days with very little effort, and more often than not, i find my little RG351M in my hands after watching. Thank you for being u bro. The retro gaming community needs u, and i personally need u, man. I want YOU to have a great rest of YOUR day, and every other day as well.
Your "RG351M" eh? Whatever you want to call it bud....
@@TheT0nedude uh, that ls wat my handheld is called
4:02 Love how you called the game Dungeon Crawler. More fitting really, not many playing this game would be calling themselves a Master.
0:30 - "And I only made one of those up!"
I'm glad he's being honest. I don't believe ANYTHING like this would've been ported to the TurboGrafx CD.
I always ended up using the same three or four spells in this game because I could remember them easily and input them quickly under pressure. The first symbol determined the strength of the spell the rest would be the effect.
The food show idea is great!
Might and Magic 3's turbografx-16 port also had weird soundtrack. Maybe it was customary back then to make a funky soundtrack if you ported a dungeon crawler game from PC/Amiga to home console.
It’s incredible that how dungeon crawler games have been evolved over the years.
To be fair this game when it first came out on Atari ST (1987) never concieved of the possibility that it would ever be played on controller, it's definitely best played with KB+M. In 1987 the SNES and 16 bit consoles were a glint in the milkman's eye and would not come out for a couple of years. The spell system as it is was always meant to be experimented with and very cumbersome on a pad. Enjoy it best now on Amiga or PC - it's still a great game that drips atmosphere.
5:11 Ah, the Ludicrous Water, Corn and Kirtle Puzzle Session, those were the days!
Whelp, time to figure out the best version of this to queue up on my 'to play' list.
I also have terrible allergies (three types of grasses mainly).
I've found that masks help out a lot for that.
The Grey Lord? Sounds like a Neutral plot to me 🤔.
What an interesting game. Nice video 👍
Well now we know where Legend of Grimrock got the idea from with the Spells at least and just about everything else in here
I'm definitely not a fan of dungeon crawlers but I just came across your video on Hyper Iria and found a pre-pathced rom of it, so I'm definitely going to be checking that one out later
Why do I feel like the soundtrack fits with Kip’s “I Love Technology” song from Napoleon Dynamite?
Yeah, it really is tragic that this released before the SNES mouse came out. It would have been so much more playable with mouse support.
Glad to see you took Wuuf with you
Yay I learned of more awesome SNES music from this video
It will eventually be featured in a Relaxing Music compilation that may or may not be featured in another bigass compilation somewhat soon...
Damn, the music sounds like it's from two complete different games :D
When I was 11 or 12, me & my best bud used to play this on an old PC. Floppy disks & all. Hours spent trying to assemble the best party, drawing dungeon maps on grid paper, etc... Good times.
The rolodex of spell? You certainly made casting spells sounds fun!
I played the hell out of Dungeon Master as a younger man. For some reason I always picked "Zed" for my group, even though he wasn't great at anything. And that "War cry" sound effect!
I remember playing the DOS version of DM back in the day.
Don't knock the Sony Microwave. Its Doom port was arcade perfect!
The Hall of Champions song is a banger
This is the only game I can remember for sure accidentally saving over my older brothers save file!
you guys always giveme clasic game room vibes. and i love you guys for it
Watching this just reminded me of Legend of Grimrock time to go boot that game up.
Had this for the Atari St great game
I loved this game! It was so fun!
To be fair, those are some jamming beats @5:10
It looks like eye of the beholder. Thank you SNES drunk
Legend of Grimrock was a great homage to this genre
I finished Drakkhen by own in my youth, nothing can scare me.
I"ll give this game a try.
Games like this blew my mind back in the day even if i didn't understand them

There is a RUclips channel called ’Binging with Babish’ that shows how to make various foods, and does have some from video games. No wall meat yet though.
I love this game! Yeah, it's slow, but the tension is palpable. You never know what's around the next corner.
I remember renting this as a kid. I was too young or too dumb for it. Prolly both. I ended up taking it back and getting Tiny Toons:Buster Busts Loose. That was more my speed. I’d give it another whirl now that I’m old and smrt.
If you are looking for the show that shows you how to make the food you see in video fl games - Babish’s Culinary universe is what ye seek.
Maybe one day he’ll do Castlevania wall meat. He’s done a bunch of video game foods already.
Lol I like the music from that game.
My buddy and I spent hours playing this game as a kid. This game was wild without a manual or spell guide
I also played with no manual or spell guide. Entering random spell combos to accidently discover spells for the win!
If any microwave would get a port it would be the sharp famicom :D (yes, the microwave was the only official famicom while the JP NES wad just nicknamed this as abbreviation from family computer)
Love me a good floor bread and wall chicken sandwich, or if you're lucky enough to find some oil drum beef you got the stuff for a good french dip.
😄👍
I wish I knew about this when it came out.
"Oil barrel beef" LOL
I’ve played. It’s fun for what it is.
Binging with babish and arcade with Alvin both cook video game foods
Total length of video: 400 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 2.5 secs.
.63% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
Had I a SNES growing up, I'd have tried to play this
Side note: i wonder if the people who did the port noticed that it kinda looks like the words Fire Sperm are spelled out in the top right under the first party members hand equipped items
You ever try Eye of the Beholder? The SNES version is solid and very similar to Dungeon Master
I remember my play this often as a young kid, as well as Arcana.
She would litterly kill certain enemies by closing the door on em repeatedly lol.
Speaking of video game food, shout out to the hunk of beef with the one bone in it. Never have I seen meat so tasty in any media.
And now you have to do a Shining in the Darkness review.
and I hope YOU have a GREAT rest of YOUR day :)
Never could get into dungeon crawlers as a kid; not enough object permanence to remember my way around hahaha. Now as a grown up kid I may have to try my hand at one of them... along with a map someone already made from the internet lol. Thank you for this channel!
Check out one of the Etrian Odyssey games that was just ported to Switch/Steam. Underneath the anime aesthetic are some of the best old school style dungeon crawlers with a lot of modern conveniences like built in mapping/automapping.
The Switch port of the original Phantasy Star also has automapping if you want something more retro.
