Back in the day sewing was economical…..talking about everything from fabric to notions even sewing machines. Today…totally different story. Don’t be limited by anything. Be creative to make it work for you. All of us had to start somewhere. As with everything you will learn over time. Happy Sewing 🤗
New Sewer Suggestion: Buy a new (not used) basic mechanical sewing machine, Singer or Brother around $100. Sewing machines require maintenance, and a vintage or used machine might need maintenance that as a new Sewer, you may not understand. It takes time to learn your machine and yes you will need to become a car repair person to your sewing machine. Start with a simple project and a basic "easy" pattern.. It's So Easy or Sew Simple are 2 brands out there made for behinners: suggestions is a simple aline skirt to start with a elastic waste band..I also suggest a cotton fabric which is easy to work with. Only buy the basic of notions.. scissors, sewing pins, fabric marking pen, tape measure, iron and a ironing board.. one item you should never be frugal with is thread.. buy quality thread as this will only cause frustration. Cheap thread will constantly break in your machine. Make sure you pick up all your supplies listed on your pattern before starting. Fabric: shop clearance and sales or even local thrift shops. I have sewing since I was around 10 and watched my mom sew, she sewed professionally for Levi and had her own shop doing alterations and custom made clothes.. I hope this helps everyone out there..
One thing I do is watch sewing channels where very experienced sewers make quilts and they have much more experience than I have and that discourages me because I am not at the same level as they are. So I need to only watch beginners until I get more experience under my belt. As in crocheting, nobody wants to pay the price of handmade creations as they compare them to Walmart hats and scarves that are very inexpensive.
I feel like sewing is an expensive hobby for me at times. I do however try to be selective with fabric and what I really want to make for me or learn. I have been sewing very long and in my opinion am still at a very independent beginner level. I find some patterns to be confusing on what it shows and the directions [ the big 4]. I also found that people who don't sew think oh that looks great you should sell what you make but they don't understand the time and money that goes into it. I sometimes wish it were that simple lol.
A story I tell a new person who wants to sew is sewing’s like two other things. Carpentry and sheet metal work. Have the pretty much same logo. When you make a quilt you take a perfect flat piece of fabric cut it up and put it back together in something useful. You have a front, insulation and an inside or back and nice trim. Sound familiar? Only instead of nails, thread. Sheet metal work, take a flat piece of metal cut it into shapes that are made into something 3-demential. The principal of attaching a sleeve to a shirt is the same as the duct work in your house. For me at least when I realized that the light came on and it all made sense to me. I’m a guy who sews if you haven’t already figured that out. I’ve been sewing for awhile, l’m lucky that I have vintage sewing machines I sew with and can maintain them, I would be hard pressed to figure out what to get if I had to choose one now especially starting out fresh. I don’t recommend a vintage machine to start with anymore then I would recommend anything computerized or a cheap plastic wonder. When I do start people off sewing I suggest a simple apron pattern go through everything and have them assemble the garment by hand. That way they learn the 80% without worrying about how to work a machine. There is always the option of sewing classes and quilting classes to help a person get started. Nice job on this video.
As a garment construction course instructor, I cannot stress enough your point about starting simple. I ask my beginner students to start with a simple straight skirt pattern and use a solid, heavy weight cotton fabric. One student insisted on a wool plaid fabric and a pleated skirt pattern. Another had a machine that was broken and would only sew zig-zag, and she wanted to make a skirt with an old, worn stretch jersey bed sheet. Neither student was able to complete their project during the 8-week course timeframe, and both were terribly disappointed and had zero fun sewing.
Very helpful video. You are absolutely right about some sewing projects don't save money, for instance a quilt is fun to make but the backing fabric alone can be very costly so I agree with you. Of course, we love sewing but it is good to let others know the reality of the expense involved. Thank you.
I love love your videos and you have helped me so much with everything embroidery and sewing. However I'm having a lot of trouble with a bathing suit top that I bought from modlily. It has absolutely no support up top and I'm hoping you can do a video on how to add supportvto a bathing suit?
