Story- Long ago, Changsheng lived in the mountains of Chenyu Vale. One day, a desperate doctor who had lost his family to a deadly plague had traveled to the Vale, searching for the Herblord. Arriving at the Herblord's residence, he found only an extremely weakened white snake. Changsheng offered to make the contract known as the "Way of the Dragon-Dragging Jade Snake" and teach him her secret arts of healing, while also warning that though it would give him powerful healing abilities, it would also harm his own health. Despite the risks, the doctor accepted and the two bonded their lives together, their eyes swapping with each other. Using his own lifeforce and Changsheng, the doctor saved many, at great cost to himself. Before his death, he passed down Changsheng and her contract to his disciple. The doctor's successors used their lifeforce to save countless lives, at the cost of their own. This cycle continued for generations and had at least four successors. When Baizhu's master was on his final days, he sought to use the art to save his disciple's beloved from a rare congenital heart condition. The woman refused, as she saw Changsheng's lifeforce manipulation as evil and unnatural, and didn't want him to sacrifice his life for hers, as she loved him too. Her pleas shook the man and made him question his views, as she'd made him realize that the lives of Changsheng's contractors were also valuable. In his final moments, he left a letter to Baizhu in which he asked him a single thing: "May you find a remedy for this conundrum, which has ailed us so..." While they stood in front of his master's grave, Baizhu and Changsheng had a conversation. She showed regret at her inability to save her contractors, while Baizhu asked what would happen if he refused the contract and left her without a host. When she said she'd spend her final moments sleeping at Mount Yaojun and wait to be reunited with her late friends, Baizhu accepted the contract, to Changsheng's slight regret. When she showed fear over how many more would accept the contract and give their lives, Baizhu promised her that none would do so and that the contract would end with him. "None. This contract... will end with me." Is a hella powerful line. The contract will end with him because he doesn't wish anyone else to bear such a responsibility? Or because Baizhu's aiming to rid the world of a sickness in particular? Either way, amazing stuff.
@@nvk225 pain is a constant of life. In Chinese we do not say "life is the pursuit of happiness"... we say that life is the act of "swallowing bitterness". Life will always give you pain. Happiness is a byproduct of enduring pain.
One of the best story quests. You could really feel the emotion and beauty in this story, as though it were a rare flower. Elegant but invigorating. An even bigger treat that it was Baizhu's story, a genuinely calm but interesting experience.
"None, this contract will end with me." Baizhu Story made me cry for real. 😭 We all thought he was a suspicious doctor but turns out he is the most selfless doctor ever. Aiming immortality so that he may be able to share his infinite lifeforce to save lives. I cried harder when Xiao gave him a warning on how Immortality isn't what it is cracked up to be. Baizhu. ❤❤❤
Truly one of my favorite (if not my most favorite) stories so far. The last line was delivered so calmly but gave me chills. The juxtaposition of his willingness to use the craziest means to achieve the noblest goal is so nicely done. He wants to save not just every patient, but also the life of Changsheng, as well as any other person (and their loved ones) from the burden of inheriting the contract. For this reason, he seeks immortality so he will bear the contract (and the pain that comes with it) forever. Baizhu is officially my favorite character from Genshin now😢❤
I love the diversion of expectations with Baizhu's goal of immortality. It's not driven by selfish desires, but the need to end a cycle of suffering both for the people around him and himself.
Imagine Baizhu as a world boss with his own domain like Childe, but you can't beat him because he heals instantly and the trick to beat him is to let your HP fall below 20% and then Baizhu looses HP to YOU, only then can he take damage
Stories like this are the ones that enrich the experience within the game, once you get a certain character you really feel attached to it, like actually knowing the character. You are not playing just to "play the game", it just feel different to other games in where they give you characters just for the sake of it without any context or background. This game simply has soul.
Don't forget to check out the Chinese dubbed as well. It's sooo good and I just love the fact that 长生 (Changsheng) simply means long life. Nice artwork as always. Thanks, everyone at Hoyo! 😊
This quest was definitely worth the 2+ years wait, Hoyoverse did my favorite character in the game justice, the quest was so beautiful and touching, it made me tear up several times. Thank you for this amazing experience
He's sus AND selfless. The methods he's researching to gain immortality are often forbidden and a human seeking to gain that sort of thing is frowned upon as against the natural order of things - it's one of the sins of the Akademiya, for example, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's technically a sin in the eyes of the Heavenly Principles. But at the same time, his intentions behind doing so are good. So I'd call him morally grey overall; there's still an element of susness there despite the ultimate goal. As someone that fell for him two years ago because of the sus aspects, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out overall despite not being AS suspicious as initially presented. It's a good balance.
Did anyone else notice that Baizu and Changshen exchanged eyes. In the beginning Changshen had yellow eyes but at the end she had Baizu's red eyes, the same goes for Baizu
Lovely quest. Everything in this quest was well done - the storytelling was way more fluent than in other quests, it referenced world quests and events like the lantern rite that to recently were not referenced by story or archon quests at all and left me wondering if they're even canon. The camera angles and animations were very cool and made the quest so much more interesting, made it a lot more fun to play than the older quests where the NPCs just sit around talking idly. Love that in the part that we search for clues Baizhu actually goes around searching instead of just sitting idly or being posed in an animation somewhere around. The appearances of other playable characters were awesome and it the fact that they were hidden around between quest checkpoints for you to notice and get a fun little interaction was so cool. I love the fact that we're getting other characters' perspectives on things, like how we played as Baizhu to walk with his fellow apprentice, rather than just the Travelers, it makes the plot much more rich than just getting to see what the traveler sees and hears, although it does take away the feeling of immersing yourself in being a character in the story. Also the design of the domain was stunning, it was one of the most beautiful domains in game and I hope they use the new mechanisms they showed us in future domains too. The domain had a bit of an aztec feel to it though, it would be much more suited to be a Natlan than an Liyue domain in my opinion. As for the story itself, as always it had it's funny and it's darker notes, the darker ones being more prominent here. I do think that both Baizhu, Jialiang and Jiangli are very inconsiderate and reckless when it comes to their actions, although they have good intentions they threaten to leave a young kid without parents and a huge city without a brilliant doctor. I do agree with Hu-Tao's philosophy of moving on and not turning people into zombies more than Baizhu's recklessness and blind hope to find imortality which some have been cursed with but I appreciate them showing us both perspectives and not forcing us on one of them like in some other story quests like Nahida's first story quest (Nahida's one of my favorite characters but seeing her force her philosophy upon someone without even trying to understand where they come from, and the player just ganging up on him ruined the quest for me, because the character was doing dubious stuff but his perspective was worth exploring and understanding instead of just shutting him down completely). Anyway I hope hoyo uses this type of storywriting, gameplay and camera angles for their future quests. Stellar work hoyo. And this video is a treat as well, the ending shot where he has Changsheng's eyes and the flowers falling behind him, "This contract ends with me". Someone should turn it into a dynamic wallpaper.
this story quest absolutely broke me, Baizhu is definitely one of my most favourite characters now, and im so so happy that he turned out to be a very caring and pure individual, instead of the devious scheming one everybody thought he was and the final scene where baizhu says "None. This contract... will end with me" just sent absolute chills down my spine
So So beautiful. I am already so deeply invested in this game, so when I see teasers like this it just reminds me why I love everything about this game. Most especially the lore.
Maybe... but Baizhu is seeking immortality so he can endlessly help people with his life energy... maybe that's what he meant with "this contract will end with me." Sadly if anyone is gonna die I have a feeling it's gonna be Xiao... I hope not... :(
This truly is gorgeous. I had waited since 1.0 to finally have Baizhu, and it was worth the wait. But the tale of the white snake and doctor being influencal to their storyline also won my heart - though it is changed somewhat! I know Baizhu has a billion death flags, and even still I find it hard not to be attached wholeheartedly to both him and changsheng - knowing that when Baizhu eventually goes, so will Changsheng. And I don't want to but also can't help but imagine that that must be a day for Hu Tao as well.. it is her job to send the souls of others to the afterlife, afterall. And the pharmacy AND funeral parlour are good friends/alliances. Either way, this was beautiful.. their story holds something dear to my heart and I'm so so happy to have finally got it within my hands!

With his themes of mortality defiance and changing fates, he might be a crucial character in the quarell with Heavenly Principles. Or -at least- an important piece of the puzzle when discovering the "truth of this world".
Before, Baizhu is sus for trying to research immortality by bringing Qiqi under his care. After the quest, all those suspicion was absolutely wrong after all. The immortality he seek is not for himself, but rather for him to endlessly cure people, to ensure Changsheng survive since he will die without a host and to seal the contract so that no other doctors would take on the contract and die young like his predecessors.

They truly were doctors of all kinds as it seems. And lastly, Baizhu only wants the immortality in order to heal patients forever and never fade away himself so no one is hurt after him- He really is incredibly irreplaceable. 😭

It’s funny that before his official debut as a playable character. Many people theorized lots of things. First, he was theorized as the God of Wisdom disguising as a doctor who hides from someone, but it was debunked and it was revealed that it is Nahida. Second, people theorized that he is a descendant of Vishaps (the race that Kokomi and her family came from) but turns out, that the snake eyes he has is from Changsheng. Third, he was theorized that he has a casino, but there is no mention about it in his character story nor he brought it up during his story quest. Finally, people theorized that he was the missing soldier from 500 years ago. But then again, no mention of it in his story. Baizhu is just weak because of his contract. With all these theories, Hyv managed to cut these down and wrote Baizhu as a regular guy hanging out with an ancient magic healing snake.

That one line send shivers. That words so powerful yet so beautiful.

I am a doctor and this story actually made me tear up
Would you give your life for the sake of your patients ?
@@samuelfraysse4209 well you are giving your sleep, your youth and time. It's hard, exhausting, stressful. You are already giving your life in a sense. It is like this for many jobs, i am not saying one is better than other but the difference is you deal with life sometimes it's more than a job.
"None. This contract... will end with me."
Is a hella powerful line. The contract will end with him because he doesn't wish anyone else to bear such a responsibility? Or because Baizhu's aiming to rid the world of a sickness in particular? Either way, amazing stuff.
He wishes to become immortal. So that no one else will have to take on that responsibility.

Both. He don't want a successor to bear early death like all the previous contractors, and he wanted to cure all people who deserves second chance.

@@nvk225 pain is a constant of life. In Chinese we do not say "life is the pursuit of happiness"... we say that life is the act of "swallowing bitterness". Life will always give you pain. Happiness is a byproduct of enduring pain.
yeap!!!
I think it is the most touching story among the legend missions.
One of the best story quests. You could really feel the emotion and beauty in this story, as though it were a rare flower. Elegant but invigorating. An even bigger treat that it was Baizhu's story, a genuinely calm but interesting experience.
"None, this contract will end with me."
Baizhu Story made me cry for real. 😭
We all thought he was a suspicious doctor but turns out he is the most selfless doctor ever.
Aiming immortality so that he may be able to share his infinite lifeforce to save lives.

Baizhu by far has to be one of my favorite characters, him and Changsheng just are so different yet the same which adds a balance that I love
Baizhu is officially my favorite character from Genshin now😢❤
And I thought Baizhu had hidden dark motives, but he turned out to be one of the purest people of Teyvat.
This hits different when you hear it in Yaodie Valley, Chenyu Vale
I love the diversion of expectations with Baizhu's goal of immortality. It's not driven by selfish desires, but the need to end a cycle of suffering both for the people around him and himself.
This man deserve to live in peace, I FELT BAD USING HIM ON MY TEAM ALTHOUGH I NEED HIM.😭😭

Stories like this are the ones that enrich the experience within the game, once you get a certain character you really feel attached to it, like actually knowing the character. You are not playing just to "play the game", it just feel different to other games in where they give you characters just for the sake of it without any context or background.
This game simply has soul.
Changsheng is just amazing
Бай Чжу заслуживает отдельного аниме где он ищет способы стать последним человеком согласившимся на контракт с Чан Шэн.
It does sound like a good premise for a story, though it would be better as a novel or light novel.
Not sure if i should be happy or sad, i love Baizhu for being very sus up until last version, but him being so selfless is also great.
We already have one sus doctor from the fatui lol
@@liszst Nah that one is straight up evil not just sus
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

So, everything indicates that Changsheng is the Herblord. With Chenyu Vale release it became almost obvious.
Did anyone else notice that Baizu and Changshen exchanged eyes. In the beginning Changshen had yellow eyes but at the end she had Baizu's red eyes, the same goes for Baizu
Everyone knows, it’s in his profile story
Loved their story quest and how Hu Tao was woven in as the "natural enemy" of the doctor, that was fun and beautiful
An absolute masterpiece!
Changsheng is super cute snake ♥
Honestly Baizhu's story quest is everything I could've asked for. I might be biased, but I truly enjoyed every second of this quest 😭
Baizhuu.. 💕💕
It would be interesting to see the interaction between Baizhu and Dottore
A doctor won't abandon their patients. Baizhu is no exception.
Anyone here after doing the quest in Chenyu Vale?

this story quest absolutely broke me, Baizhu is definitely one of my most favourite characters now, and im so so happy that he turned out to be a very caring and pure individual, instead of the devious scheming one everybody thought he was

Maybe... but Baizhu is seeking immortality so he can endlessly help people with his life energy... maybe that's what he meant with "this contract will end with me." Sadly if anyone is gonna die I have a feeling it's gonna be Xiao...

3:08 *Why has Changsheng RED eyes here already..?* Do the doctors that made contracts with her in the past always have red eyes naturally so now she has them and the doctor with short hair has Changsheng‘s eyes? Such amazing details!
Moment that resulted in absolute goosebumps were: 0:57 , 2:47 and 4:18 *- Just like with Collei, Cyno, Wanderer / Scaramouche and Yaoyao we had to wait over 2 years for his release- and I can’t await for the journey that may join me, as I waited since the first time I layed my eyes upon him back in October or November 2020… Baizhu has ALWAYS been there!* And maybe it‘s meant to be Qiqi and Baizhu in one party, in order to secure Baizhu‘s savety to the fullest..?
It‘s so nice to know Changsheng‘s story now too, and how Baizhu doesn’t want ANYONE to suffer from her contract after him- He‘s such a mysterious legend. 🐍
Baizhu only wants the immortality in order to heal and secure his patients forever and never fade away himself so no one is hurt for the contract after him or in the patient‘s daily life‘s overall- He really is incredibly irreplaceable. 😭
Also the first doctor who made a contract with Changsheng looks like Baizhu with his kind of hair too- which I find so nice. Perhaps he got reincarnated as Baizhu? Who knows…
The ones that risk that contract in order to make others be healthy is so special, as they only want others to be saved since the patients suffer just as much as these doctors did when they lost their… family members. They truly were doctors of all kinds for all kinds.

Can Changsheng go to Chenyu Valley with Baizu to visit Fujin and the beast (i forgot his name lmao) 🥹?

Makes me love my Dr. Baizhu even more. So glad he came after years of waiting, in only 10 pity.
And just like that, Baizhu is one of my favorite characters
baizhu is so pretty with a snatched waist
At 2:02, that mountain in the background was the perfect illustrations of "mountains bow in respect"..
