Thanks for this tour of Mrs Gaskell's canon. My journey through her works is still at its early stages and, so far, I have read only 'Cranford' and 'North and South' - although 'Mary Barton' is on my TBR list for 2024. I loved 'Cranford' and so fell under the spell of its charm that I immediately re-read it. However 'North and South' had so much more to it than mere charm and it immediately became one of my favourite Victorian novels (which is why 'Mary Barton' has been lined up for exploration in 2024).

North and South is so wonderful! Mary Barton is definitely the closest in themes to it so it’s an interesting one to pick up next. I hope you enjoy it!

This is exciting!! I'm gradually working through her books and I love her! I'll be reading my first full length novel by her in April with Kate's Patreon (Ruth). I've read The Moorland Cottage and the short story The Grey Woman. Really enjoyed both.

I’m so excited to get into more of her shorter fiction. She really was such a talented writer!

I do love Cranford - one of my favorite classics. I am still working my way through the rest of her works.

I can see why people love it, but it’s kind of like looking through a window down at a party going on. I can see it, but I’m not a part of it yet 😂. Hopefully I can reread it at a time when I can more fully fall into it.

Thanks for a great review I'm just starting out with her books, read Cranford last year and loved it. Now I can't wait to read the rest. Her biography of Charlotte Bronte is on my February tbr, I'm reading the Brontes as well this year. Excellent video 😊

I just finished my 4th re-read of N&S (that's how much I love it!) and discovered so many new ideas and themes. If you like audiobooks, Juliet Stevenson does an amazing read of it, and makes the dialect understandable. I have yet to read Sylvia's Lovers and Wives and Daughters, so your comments are making it sooner rather than later. Two short stories (more like novellas) I love and find comforting (yet bittersweet) are The Moorland Cottage and Cousin Phillis. Enjoy!

Thank you for the short story suggestions! You’re the second to mention Moorland Cottage so I think I’ll prioritize that one.
And you’re so right about Juliet Stevenson’s audiobook! I actually listened to a chunk of North and South the first time using that audiobook and it is so well done!

Victorian Literature never quite seems to get less intimidating 😂. I haven’t read The Life of Charlotte Brontë yet either, but I bought it about a year ago! I feel like it’s one I haven’t heard many opinions on, beyond that it’s not the most truthful portrayal. Maybe we could buddy read it!
