Love the woodlanders
So happy to see you rated Les Miserables by Victor Hugo in your top five. It is a masterpiece! Also I really enjoyed Agnes Grey…….very genuine piece of literature. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these books.
You should read Daniel Deronda if you are looking for more action in Eliot
You should read "The Woman in White and "Great Expectations"
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 Thanks for the recommendations! I have actually already read both and enjoyed them! I do need to read more Wilkie Collins though. I’ve only read that and “The Moonstone”.
@goodstrongwords No Name & Armadale are just as compelling as The Woman in White. I would recommend "The Dead Secret" to someone who has never read a Collins Novel cause it's only 350 pages. I read all 25 of his novels.
@@goodstrongwords I wish The Woman in White was filmed for the big screen.
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 Thank you! I will definitely be referring to this the next time I’m searching for a Wilkie Collins novel 😊. I have “The Law and the Lady” on my shelf already so I’ll probably start with that. But I know “Armadale” has long been on my radar too! “The Woman in White” definitely deserves the big screen treatment.
Please read DHLawrence’s review of Thomas Hardy, “Containing Six Novels and the Real Tragedy.
My favorite Dickens might be Our Mutual Friend. Here's the Wikipedia blurb: Our Mutual Friend, written in 1864-1865, is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works, combining savage satire with social analysis. This is great on audiobook and also has a great PBS series. Another of my favorites which probably doesn't classify as Victorian because it was earlier is Clarissa by Samuel Rechardson. This is a book which influenced many Victorian writers. It's an epistolary novel--all told via letters. It's quite long and there is an amazing audiobook of it which is around 100 hours long. Make sure you choose the unabridged version. These are both long books for those of us who like to live in the fictional world for extended periods. And that is the beauty of Victorian novels. They last and last...
So far Jane eyre is my favorite, because I LOVE the banter between the 2 main characters. I also really liked how they fell in love with other more because of their personality's and less because of physical attraction, which is rare in literature, and to a certain in real life to.
Even quarterly videos would be perfectly fine. An interesting video (later) would be “Reading ideas for when you’re in a slump.”
Life has its ebbs and flows. Sometimes our heads are just not in a good space for reading. We need to give ourselves permission to just live life sometimes. Short stories, audiobooks, rereads, lighter reads… When my brain needs to coast, my go to is Agatha Christie.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of WH. It’s so interesting hearing which books other people love. My list overlaps yours in several places. Other favs include: Our Mutual Friend, Little Dorrit, Jane Eyre, and Woman in White
Everyone seems to hate their first time reading Wuthering heights and here i am the one who fell in love whit the book from the very first time 😂 it was like a love at first sight, i feel so weird while almost every person i know thinks is not worth reading or have to re read it 2 or 3 times more to like it.
Me too! I adored it from the first and still read it every few years.
@@carolaustin3785 me too, i have the need of re read it again and again and again lol
Ahh ! Victorian literature is pure love.. Btw my favourite is "David Copperfield" can't love any other novel more than this one.
Same!
I can recommend "Hadji Murad" by Leo Tolstoy if you haven’t had the chance. A great read.
Completely understand how reading sometimes goes up and down Tori. I remember several decades ago having a bad break up and reading five books the whole year but reading wasn’t calling me and that’s ok. If I feel slumpy I just enjoy the other things in my life knowing books will eventually come back into my life. I’m sure you’ll be all fired up for Victober!
Hope you’re doing all right and never worry about not posting as much - sometimes that’s just how things are 💜
We'll still be here. ❤ I call once-every-two-weeks "fortnightly," but that might be a Britishism.
I hear ya girl! I keep thinking I'm in a slump then suddenly i find a book i can't put down. But that lingering slumpiness is in the background. You take as much time as you need!
it still saddens me that jennifer left us too soon, her channel was the first book tube channel that i subscribed to. I remember she said she loved reading about history because of ancient egypt so I will be reading Egyptian mythologies tales translated from the paypries by flinders petrie and Gilgamesh: A New Translation of the Ancient Epic by by Sophus Helle since it is oldest epic in history which started this tradition and I remember how she loved epic poetry. R.I.P jennifer.
What a beautiful way to honor her this month. Thank you for your comment ❤️
still cant believe jennifer is gone. hope things get better for you and you start feeling better soon 💙
Reading slumps can be so discouraging when reading is your main hobby. Surrendering to it can be so powerful and freeing though! I have been reading much less than normal and loving not reading because I feel obligated but because I want to. I hope you treat yourself to lovely things in this time and feel refreshed!
Be kind to yourself! 💛
I slowed my reading way down this year, because I read too much last year and it burnt me out. I think leisurely reading like you are doing is a good idea, I have been doing this same. I reduced my goal to half of what I read last year, and am just reading what I want.
Gosh i *so* relate (i haven't even used GR since last Victober) 🙅♀ & im also in the midst of learning / new interests that is taking my reading time. I feel like letting go of the reins is a super healthy thing (im doing the same). Lovely to see your face & whenever u pop up is just a blessing 🙂 "We're so dramatic here on bt" 😆 i find myself being like that- they're only books! lol (i stll recommend Possession tho) 🧐💕☺
Take the time you need, Tori. Please keep us posted when you feel you can. We'll be cheering for you!🧡
I've always enjoyed your channel and understand that you need a break. After all, reading should be fun--not a chore.
I read somewhere, and this may well be true, that Jane Eyre has been made into a movie or TV mini-series more than any other classic novel.
I could absolutely believe that. It’s such a well loved work. That and Pride and Prejudice are probably vying for that status 😅
Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights certainly the most well-known. But Tenant of Wildfell Hall tends to also rank highly in these lists by readers who have read all the Brontes' novels. All 3 sisters share in the glory. And remember, unlike sports won-loss records, there is no authoritative objective criteria for ranking works of art.
Excellent mash-up of several of my favourite things 😅
Thank you 😂
Glad you had a good readathon 😊
I really enjoyed reading Wilkie Collins‘ novels The Woman in White and Moonstone. But on the other hand I had heard so much praise of Middlemarch, but I was not able to finish it, I just lost interest somewhere along the way.
I’m just SO over TS. It’s really to the point of over-saturation of mediocre music. But I still love your channel 😅
Fair enough 😂. I feel like I kind of ignored the Taylor Swift hype and all of her music for so long that it’s like a new world for me in some ways, so I don’t mind it; In fact I think it’s fun! But I do respect the people who just aren’t into it. It’s like books right? Nothing works for everyone😂. Thanks for watching anyway!
mediocre music? you’re pushing it lmfao
So fun 😄apart from 4 of these (im one of those who actually enjoyed Becky Sharpes character in VFair😅) i pretty much want to read them all your description of Wuthering Heights 😆👍 You've also reminded me id really like to read The Marble Faun (N. Hawthorne) & My Cousin Rachel.. i think i need to make an organized list lol. 🤓😊
A spreadsheet would be great to break it down 😂
@@goodstrongwords i made a list last night 😆
Wow you had a great reading month 🤗 Great wrap up on MATJ (xtra thoughts on voxer) & i cant wait to hear your thoughts on When Christ.. i have the trilogy & yep im intimidated but exicted for it! 💙🧐😊
I just listened to your message finally and will send a response soon! I’m so glad we were able to do the buddy read together. I’ll do some pondering and let you know what I would be interested in next 😊
So glad you had such a good reading month!
Thank you! So am I!
I was wanting you to choose The Glass Hotel! I love that book but I also like intrigue and the "fly on the wall" feeling when people are being dishonest. Glad you had a great reading month!
Dang! Ok, well I’ll try to prioritize it as soon as I can for your sake 😅. I’ll let you know as soon as I pick it up 😊
It also has very direct ties to Sea of Tranquility. 🎉🎉🎉
I hadn’t even thought of myth retellings but that is a great shout! Joan has been on my TBR for a while - sounds amazing 🤩
I figure if it’s a myth retelling about a woman, it’s probably tragic 😂
Thanks for the reviews
The “Woodlanders” is the only one I haven’t read. Enjoyed the rest on the list.
Does Wuthering Heights count? For some reason that one stuck with me my whole life, though. Lord of the Flies is a great book.
I think Wuthering Heights is a solid choice. And thanks for the Lord of the Flies plug! If the beast of a book I’m currently reading is finished early enough, I’ll try to prioritize it 😅
I have a gorgeous Everymans Library bind up of the Pullman trilogy, The Miniaturist, The Secret History, The Historian & Live Ship Traders trilogy still tbr/ on shelves. keep pulling them out of my tbr jar then thinking.. 'but im not in the mood' 😆🙅♀ Possession is an all time favourite of mine (i sent Jenny a copy) 💘❤🩹 I have sooo many classics too & thy're probably my favourites also 🧐💕🙂
You’re the second person to promote Possession to me on this one. I think I need to prioritize it 😂
Oh my gosh i have that Penman series (& TSISpleandour) & i so wanted to get to one of them this year but alas im not sure im in the mood now. I finished MATJ last night & it is definitely affecting my Misery May choices (😪)im not sure if ill partake (i had a tbr Hardy etc planned) but y'know.. mental health etc 🙅♀ Ive always wanted to read Joan & / or Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross. Look fwd to catching up (just left u a voxer) 👍🙂
Awesome! I’ll be listening to it soon! And I totally get it. I’m bracing myself for the end of Marie Antoinette. 😬
Don't get too sad with your Misery May TBR! If you don't get around to "Joan", maybe a group read in the summer?🧡
Sounds fun! I’ll try to keep my tears to a minimum 😂
Thanks so much for these books/suggestions.. READ POSSESSION !. IT IS A wonderful endeavor. I've read it a few times. I couldn't put it down. I think Youl really enjoy it as well. Best, Rob in NYC
Thank you! I’ll try to prioritize it!
Nice list. If you’ve never read Rebecca (does that fall into Victorian?) check it out.
I have read it! It’s slightly after the Victorian Era but it is wonderful and has a similar style too. 🥰
🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍎🍉🍎🍎🍎🍎🍉🍈🍋🥕🍐🫒🥭🍇🍇🥭🥝🍐🍋🍋🍋🌶️🍑🫒🫐🍇🍏🌶️🍋🍓🍋
if my books look new I know that I've not read them. and if i have not read them by now, they'll never be read again, therefore altered book journals it is. all my books that i read have and/or will have severe signs that they're owned and used. anything less is not acceptable to me. the worse the book the more I've read it. f pretty books. they're a waste.
Fair enough 😂. I honestly don’t mind a book that looks well-loved either.
@@goodstrongwords my Little Prince book that was gifted to me 20 yra ago says hi 0/
You're right abt the Mandell books...i found more connections between The Glass Hotel and Sea of Tranquility than Station Eleven and Sea.
Good to know. Thank you!
i used to use netgalley for ebook arcs but then its so much pressure to actually read it fast and write meaningful thoughts so eventually i just stopped.
That’s why I haven’t even done netgalley. I just feel like it would be overwhelming.
I also prefer a physical book, but I love that all read however they enjoy it
I'm with you, it's crazy that these things are controversies or even debated at all. 🙄 "Just enjoy reading, it's fine" indeed! Let people enjoy things!
Such a simple concept that is so often ignored, unfortunately 😅
