I believe he failed, and is stuck in that room forever now. So I think that was his first and last shift. But if you can follow all the rules perfectly. It’s a pretty sweet job.

The ending is so confusing to me, but I feel like the character was able to break a LOT of rules with no consequences. It was very enjoying regardless of my confusion.
he decided to go hide in that place as the houseowner called and said so, on the phone. but now the houseowner is home, says he'd never called him and why is he hiding there, it's not what he should be doing, to get out of there and properly continue following rules. dude replies he can't seem to get out of that place, as if the open air in-between that place and rest of house is solidified, like an invisible door. houseowner calmly replies "I see" and just shuts the door to that place, implying it's too late to help him now and that the houseowner is leaving him there to die.
so yea, the character did not break rules without consequences.
in the end, he failed and awaits death, stuck in that place.
I love rules stories they or the best and I love it even more when they take them for a joke....😮😮😮jokes on them... Thank you 😊

So from the first call from "Mr. Brown" it was "him" talking to Jack. Like 2 truths and a lie to lull him into trusting what he's being told. Also I believe "him" is the man in the painting in the basement.

The good "list of rules stories keep it short and simple" the bad ones are like "when a green light shines on the crossroads on april 15 while it's raining and a cat is chasing a chicken on the outskirts of London you need to clip your big toenail while singing a song backwards", this is the second type sadly.
Short and simple, for people with short attention spans, who have no thought provoking imagination. This story was not one of them. Sadly.
This was short and simple. There were only 10 rules and there were only 4 durable rules 5 if you include making sure all doors and windows are locked. The rest are task performed for specific time frames
