- The Boss SP 303 was a classic budget sampler made popular by producers such as J Dilla, Madlib and MF Doom. It's warm gritty sound dubbed it the poor mans SP 1200. In this video tutorial Greg Savage will explain step by step how to get a boom bap bass sound when sampling from vinyl records into the SP 303 using the built-in EQ and Isolator features.

"Uuuhhhhhhhhh", Don't let J Ju in the studio, a beat will never get made.

Hi, would you be willing to showing the entire step you use when making a song out of sp 303? The more detailed the video is, the better it would be !
I’ll do it for ya. Everyone uses this wrong. Pattern mode is awesome and if you don’t think so- you’re wrong. 😂. Just some random dude on the internet’s opinion. But, no really, I’m gonna give away all my secrets I’ve learned on this thing. New Gen discovering Dilla/madlib/ FlyLo etc etc and this dude ain’t helping you.
@@discowolf25did u ever make a video
@@neovincibeatsI bought an sp303 in 2011. It was pretty hard to find information on how to use these things back then. Nick tha 1da posted some cool videos back on the day. Look those up if you want some insight into the work flow.
you do know that, when you switch between fx, it turns the previous one off, right? like when you applied compression, and switched to EQ, it doesn't retain the compression.
Damon White Yes, I'm aware of that. If I wanted both, I would've re-sampled.
"take some of the crackle out"
*pulls knob all the way back*
Nice technique. I sometimes do this within my own productions using the chopped up sample and filtering out evertying then playing out a bass line in 16 levels. thanks for some dope info man keep banging.
Nice, what you working with in terms of production?
thanks, I work with an MPC ren and studio one 3.
Nice!
Greg Savage yea just uploaded a vid displaying my workflow on my channel.
Chex it out when you can.
Hey there, I'm just wondering what do you exactly mean with playing out a bass line in 16 levels? You will create a bass sound and think of a bass line. Than you will play that bass line at 16 different volume levels? Thanks and regards
Daaaamn you could of shown so much more in this video :). People need to hear how good it sounds when you use an effect like the EQ, resampled it to another pad ,then crank the Vinyl Sim up etc etc.
True, I mean... I could have also made a 20 minute vid on features alone, but that's not what the vid was about.
What would you like to see in future vids?
It depends on what goal you are trying to achieve. But it would be great to show how the Vinyl Sim can massively effect drum loops. The same with the Compressor, if the drum loop you are putting through it has harsh/large transients for example in the hi-hats then it hits the compressor in a really cool way and you get this nice groove if you push it in the right way. Happy to give you some more suggestions if you want to send me a message or email :).
Sam Ben-David the goal is mentioned in the beginning of the video ie: answering the followers question.
I'll touch on the what you've mentioned in future vids
@@DJESSBEEDEE and that’s why it will always be my master out…17 years and running 😂. ✊🤟✌️
@@discowolf25how do I set it up so it's my master out
Its funny, I actually came here to look more at the truncating process. Do you really just have to tap the MARK button on stop and start and get lucky? Is there any way to more finely tune your start and stop locations with the knobs?
yeah, u press the start/end button. then turn the start and end knobs till it's correct. u press mark just to get close. the fine tuning is done with the knobs
How would you then go about pitching this sample in the SP so that you could create a multi-note bass line?
Use the pitch function and resample to new pad
I'm pretty new to the SP, but so far I am having a hard time getting the pitch effect to sound decent on most samples. Any advice?
redjess1206 no advice sorry
redjess1206 pitch on the 303 is atrocious stay far away from it seriously dude
I never had a problem with the pitch, but you can't expect to take one note and get all the intervals.. that's not going to happen
Cool video, but what were you planning to do with 1 bass sound on an sp303? Just one-note bass stabs? I can't think of any way to melodically play a bass sample on the 303, besides manually resampling to different pads with the pitch function, which would probably be super tedious and inaccurate.
So as mentioned in the beginning of the video. This was to help a follower with crafting a bassline tone on the SP303 that was trying to follow something I had done in battery. How he wants to use the bass tone in the Sp is beyond my knowledge
Ah I got you. Thanks for the response! Peace
No problem my friend
couldn't you resample with pitch to create different notes?
buster if that's what you choose to do
Thank you for this Video! But I should‘ve edited to 3:03 minutes 🤪 come oooon. Much love from germany
nice!
Thanks
you forgot to say you have to resample.
This video is
Revolution to my production , since 1999 . . .
how do you get the sample to play without holding the pad down?
Nino Brown gate, turn it off
wish i never sold my 303
Dystopian Caveman they're pretty affordable though (ebay)
shout out the numark turntable
Liam Cooper indeed
I've had the 303 for over a year and haven't had time to make anything much with it. anyone looking to buy it? I have the original instruction manual, adapter, 1 smart memory card, the 303 is in great condition.
how much?
Did you sell it yet?
$300
I'm sorry, I didn't see the inquiry until just now.
Believe me, I'd keep it if I didn't need the $$$. I have a big family and it's gettin' mad expensive as the kids are gettin' older.
madlib really use this machine
20 years late dude...
ok sorry!
Yes sir
@@soundblaster2009 u mean he stopped using it 20 years ago? he does it all on a MacBook now?
@@joeakajoe1 he made all the beats on bandana on an iPad he did use the Sp back during madvillianys production not sure how much he uses it now especially since he has his iPad
i got a question maybe it´s a little of topic since it´s about midi so..
Can the SP555 control a synth via midi out, as in triggering the synth notes on the SP and recording the midi trigers?
did some googling but there is some but not much out there about the 555's midi out.
I'm not sure, I'd have to test it out
Koen van D I feel like I tried this when I had an sp606 and wanted to do that with my mopho and it didn't work like that. Stupidly sold it, now I want it back.
Boo Radely 😞
Rory?
nice
how do you work the sequencer in the sp404 i have the manual but it is not in English.
MC Picket Fence Google English version
I'm not a 404 user
If you're making beats just use the resample method. It'll take some practice but it's much more creatively flexible.
thanks Christ666Killer I appreciate the help. about start practicing that now
of course man. You'll get it in no time ;)
MC Picket Fence 303 man
next video suggestion..HOW TO MAKE THE MADLIB BASS WARBLE EFFECT !!
hmmm are sure it's the bass that warbling? Link me to few songs that have this sound.
this question has been asked for years, haven't seen a good answer yet. Some people theorize that the bass warble came out in the mastering process and wasn't as prominent in the initial 303 mix. Really hope someday we get a good answer on how to do a similar effect on the 303/404.
Link me to a song of his with this so called sound. I keep asking people, but not one ever posts a link
The main thread for this was from the spforums, it's the first result google shows me when searching 'madlib bass warble' The first post in that thread has 3 pretty decent examples. sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14450
I honestly think it's from the 303's timestretch and is made more prominent after being mastered.
Christ666Killer I'm looking for an audio example ie link to a song.
Maybe I'm wrong but you don't show how you filter out the other sounds in the extract.
panckko there weren't any sounds that needed to be extracted
Diy Music Biz ok thanks.

Indeed
can you grab a bass note thats not open and alone ? this one is easier cause its singles out...what if you want to use this technique but the bass note i not that obvious?
J.A.V then you filter it out as best as you can.
Diy Music Biz so your saying it's possible to grab any note from the sample and make it a bass note ? Or just sample a bass note from anywhere and match the keynote by pitching or whatever
J.A.V my response was to your original question. Please see above
Diy Music Biz by filter it out you mean bring it out more?
Diy Music Biz does it have to be a bass note is my question ?

I watched a Native Instruments interview with Frank from Detroit(forgive Me,I forget his last name but hes VERY connected to Dilla) on RUclips. As a newcomer to making beats,I bought my very first drum machine which is Obviously the Maschine Mk3. So I am just hearing of Frank,Dilla and MadLib. What advice do you have for a novice looking to make music that real artists want to use.Ive done promoting for Underground Nashville Artists such as Jelly Roll,Haystak MakMillion, Struggle Jennings, and a young up and coming artist out of Pensacola,FL named CremRo Smith. So my question is this, Is the Maschine Mk3 the Right Choice? Every Bone in my body says YES,but your outside opinions matter, for you guys are the undisputed masters of beat making.
Thanks man. Picking a piece of gear is a personal preference my friend. I'd go to the store and test it out and see if you like it...let that make your decision.
@bangbang300 yea for the most part
i had this , i thought it was wack
maybe it was you who was wack since j dilla channeled some greatness through it

You can still find them pretty inexpensive
I'm telling you. You have to use your brain.

Truncating isnt too hard on the SPs. Chopping samples can be annoying tho

Wat
SP samplers are trash. Boss/Roland 's example of being out of touch by continually making them instead of reissue and, improve upon the MS-1. Truncating and chopping on the MS-1 still easy as fuck in 2020. (Plus the MS-1's real time sequencer is even better than the ones on an MPC or even an SP1200).
