There’s a piece I had to play in highschool that required me to hold out a high A at pianissimo for 16+ seconds it was ridiculous. And don’t get me started on profanation…
I am a beginner horn player only been playing for about a year, part of a school band and some notes are for some reason hard to hit, for example, D4 G5 C#5 etc.
My break is exactly on middle C. When I worked with Denise Tryon on my embouchure change, I learned to play with my “low set” and “high set” and I turns out my break between these is exactly on middle C!
It took me a long time to find a video that clearly discussed the registers of the friend horn WITH the notation AND with actually hearing it played. As a composer, thank you!! 👏 Quick question: You are playing a triple horn, right?
@@ScottLegerHorn oh really, pitch recognition isn’t really there for me, but b natural above high c is also my highest note(not chromatically, on glissandos), good work😅
I struggle to get past the High Register yet have little issue with going well past the pedal notes. Do you have any tips to extend my range in both directions?
He has videos on both of these but in case you missed them go up chromatically until you hit your highest good sounding note then go up another semi tone for high and vise versa for low
Haydn 50 is pretty high, looks fun, but tops out at D (quite a few of them). Hadyn 51 has the highest partial (21st) in the second mvt. and the F in the 3rd that I think you were talking about. There's a G in the Bach aria from BWV 14
as a horn player... TEACH ME PLEASE. I have been playing for 4 years and the lowest note I can play is a C on the 5th space below the stave and the highest is an A on the first ledger line above the stave. 😭😭😭 I LOVE THE HORN
When I was a kid, I played second horn in a community orchestra alongside my teacher. Occasionally, we'd be asked to read through somebody's new composition. If the inept composer wrote a first-horn part that went ridiculously high (ie, long passages near high C), he would just play the wrong notes on purpose. Nobody ever noticed.
Hi, I'm currently writing a composition that uses a french horn, having watched this video I was wondering if you could tell me if C5 (concert pitch) is playable within the 'money range' just as it is the highest note I'm using for the horn so ideally wouldn't want the player to have to switch to a different style mid way through, thank you :)
thats deinatly cuz ur a trumpet player, my trumpet techer can play a super c on french horn but not on trumpet and he stugles to play pedal g, and he is rrly good he gets highered to play with bands and stuff
I can only get 4 octaves C to C - maybe D, E when i push. But heres the thing - nobody writes music for this crazy range unless it is Titanic Fantasy for 12 horns and it does cover low C to high D. Unless you are Barry Tuckwell and play in the stratosphere, you wont see these notes in the real world, same with cellar notes and bass clef. rare.
The mid-low range was really tricky for me but the low-low range came out pretty clear. What helped me out was jutting out the bottom part of my jaw a little bit and opening up my oral cavity a ton. That really helped me to get the jaw placement that I needed (Dunno if you even still need help with it, kind of a late response but there you go😅)
F# 2.5 ocataves below the 'middle c' which is the first ledger line below the treble clef) all the way to C one octave above 'high C' which is 2 ledger lines above the treble clef. I guess that would be a 'super C'? Who cares, though. You might have one of those a day, if lucky! So, my useful range was about 4.5 octaves, with some coaxed (and very quiet) extra low notes and some extreme notes heading to 'super C'. I play trumpet now - loving it!
Don't play it so hard. Let it be easy. Let 'em just squeak out, to start. You gotta let the air vibrate the lips, so just form a really small aperture and let some air through.
@@jankington216 I used, in my playing days, get to the C below that (3 octaves below middle C) as a party piece!! Won a few pints off bass trombonists over the years!
but my book says this note is part of the horn's register, so I will write it regardless. maybe even make it very long. and very loud too.
100% correct, no notes

One piece I had it was in 6/8 the beginning was straight accented 8th notes all at the F one octave below the bottom f on the staff. It was not fun
do you remember what piece it was? @@TroubleLightCoasters

I like how the elephant buzz at the end is universal cuz my friend always does that when he plays high
Thank you Scott, you are a great ambassador for the horn.
Thank you :)
That pffff at the end 🤣 So relatable. Well played!!

Looks like it to me- two thumb triggers
I felt that last part. 😂
did you just chromatically go up to a double g?
I think I got up to the Bb and if you’re generous that last squeak was a B natural lol
@@ScottLegerHorn oh really, pitch recognition isn’t really there for me, but b natural above high c is also my highest note(not chromatically, on glissandos), good work😅

Try arpeggios, scales (and chromatic) to extend your high range. While doing so, make sure your embouchure is small with faster air.
I’m an f horn player and can’t even play high F. HOW are you so good?
Well for one thing he has played horn for almost two decades (yeah I mean he's pretty good 😂)
real
I can play and half of the high register, middle "money" and mid low and low "brake" 2 year in!!!
Thank you bro! I'm writing a piece where horns are particularly important and knowing this is going to make it actually playable. :)

That high F above the staff that the composer wrote with FFFFFF dynamics 💀
Your control on your squeaker register and pedal register is my goal

Dude i watch this video over and over just because i like hearing the pedal C
u should post a demestica excerpt vid now lol
So C2-C6 (written) is where the vast majority of horn music falls? The really low pedal tones and super high notes don’t sound very musical.

Barry Tuckwell? LOL! omigosh. There's a name from the past.

I can play whole middle register, mid low and to the f octave lower and that's all :(
I've never been able to play much above the a before the c above the stave.
how do you get anything higher than F near above the staff on the horn. I use a double horn, idk the brand
ive gone way lower than low A in bass clef. almost like a low F
I can usually play lower than that low octave you did 😂

As a horn player currently going through his undergrad, that extreme-high register makes my chops hurt just looking at it 😂
only 5 octaves. lol

I can only play 2 octaves and 3 notes, high G and D & E before the low F
No way. I can only go 2 octaves and I have been playing 7 years.
When students want the 4th part on Frippery 8, teacher learns students enjoy the break register.
I'm a very strong low player and cannot play a pedal C consistently. Thankfully, I've never had to. I can really blast a pedal E though.
Pedal E might be the most satisfying note on any instrument
bros horn register goes higher than my trumpet register
god damn and i thought i could go high on the horn in music school, didnt know it could make such sounds
Double or triple horn?
He uses a triple but even with the extra tubing that is insane range
"just brass player things" so true
Fantastic!
Thank you🙏
After 7 years playing the French horn, my range is comfortably from a low G-High G. 2 octaves. *7* years, and only 2 octaves.
You've got to drop your jaw and practice changing your armature.
Just to note that its HIS limit :)

Jeez. Bb is crazy lol. Gs are nice to have on good days. Just use the descant! lmao
Descant doesn't make it any easier. It just makes the slots wider.

How do you finger above high c on a double horn?
The best fingerings using the F horn fingerings two octaves lower but with the Bb trigger down.
So C# - Bb12, D - Bb1 and so on
I always used my left hand. ;-)
