I met up with Duong Nem for a few hours after not seeing him for many months. Our reunion in Saigon was very last minute and unplanned too far in advanced. I only found out that he was in town a day or two before he was scheduled to leave and before I was scheduled to fly to another city. We were very fortunate to see each other and I'm glad I got a chance to meet his family. His story is a little bit complicated. After spending time back in Vietnam, he was wanting to go back to Senegal to work again. Even though he was having a hard time when I came, he ultimately decided that life in Africa was better for him now than life in Vietnam. I want to wish his the best of luck in his future endeavors.

That's pretty much how I felt when I saw the first video. I think that in Senegal he's somebody special maybe he gets laid alot maybe he's a Playboy or some type of celebrity I don't know but it just seems like he'd rather be in Senegal because in reality the economy all throughout Asia is pretty good these days even a Vietnam . They have a lot of nice apartments and houses. he can do very well there financially I believe anyway.

@@kocoaberry7041 Lol! You guys are seriously sexually deprived for thinking this guy is in Senegal for the pussies! A small asian dude making a decent but very modest living by selling spring rolls won't get any free pussies in Africa. The real issue is that this guy was an unskilled laborer who learned from scratch how to make spring rolls and how to run a small business...but guess what! in Vietnam there are millions of people who make and sell spring rolls for a living...but in Senegal his small business is pretty unusual and have much more potential than in Vietnam...so yes in Senegal he's special, but this is not the kind which will attract pussies!
Plus if he go back to Vietnam he would have to start over, not an easy choice and task for a dude in his forties...

  • @MyChannel-dr8em
    @MyChannel-dr8em 7 лет назад +414

He wont say it in the videos but the reality is that "Vietnamese Man" has only one craft (he explains it in the first video) which is making "fried spring rolls". He knows its much easier for him to sell them over in Senegal because he's basically the only one making them. The situation would be much different in Saigon where they sell them everywhere in the streets.

As a person with senegalese origins who grew up in senegal I disagree. Nems have been around long before Duong ever stepped foot in the country. I've had nems hundreds of times in shops of dakar, but never has it been sold to us by a Vietnamese person, so it is not a job limited to only them. If you watched the first video, you would have noticed that the original recipe of nem has been altered in a manner more suitable to senegalese people's tastebuds. He had to learn how to make them the way the citizens liked it in order to sell them. It could be that his life is easier there for many more factors other than the one you named. When you spend so many years in a place and adapt to their environment, its not that easy to leave it all and go back to old ways of living.

    • @badjujuwan
      @badjujuwan 6 лет назад +60

He actually said that - he knows 1 thing and 1 thing only. He's not a businessman; he's a laborer who has generally learned from bad experiences. If he tries to sell in Vietnam, the competition would be too great and he would not be able to provide for his family - that's obvious and he never hid that.

I'm feeling very sad watching Duong and learning more of his struggles. I think because he is able to make a living in Senegal and
Is able to provide for his family, he's accepted the fact that life is just what it is. No need for enjoyment.. just survival. He feels burdened coming back to Vietnam because he's probably constantly reminded that he has to continue working/living in a foreign land so his family can continue to survive. It's the constant pressure. In Senegal, life is somewhat more simple. Wake up, go to work, sleep and repeat. I hope he'll live comfortably one day in both his physical and spiritual being.

This is such a strange story, but the more I think about it the more it does make sense. This guy's entire life has revolved around making spring rolls. In Vietnam I imagine that skill is not so profitable, as spring rolls are so easy to find, but in Senegal he is probably one of only very few people selling them. It's still weird that he chooses to leave his wife and child behind to go live by himself in a country so far away, but if making spring rolls is the only way he knows how to provide for them, and living there is the only way that he can do it, then it is at least somewhat understandable. What an unfortunate circumstance though.

Whites have been making Africa their home for centuries. So it is good to see something different for a change. Senegal is a great country, the entrance gate to Africa from Europe… it’s the most developed country in West Africa with Ivory coast. There are lots of business to do, freedom (real one) and access to all technology. There is a huge expat community (+30k French only in Dakar). I see that most of people think that Africa is a country and think that vietnam is safer than senegal… Try to spend a week in saigon and a week in dakar then tell us where you lost your bag/phone. As we see in this documentary, he kept himself humble and was rewarded with what he needed to survive, and live long enough to become a father to a gorgeous baby girl. Returning to start a business in Vietnam would be difficult as he would have to learn a new skill, whereas every African I know loves Chinese food and is a novelty dish for them. Africa is booming and more Vietnamese will bypass Europe and opt for Africa instead. I hope his wife can support him with his vision.

Great vids, Kyle. I feel bad for him. Choose to live away from home to put food on the table for his family is a HUGE sacrifice anyone could ever make. The only thing I wish it would happen is his wife to make the same sacrifice for him. I sense his bitterness when he mentioned his wife would always stay 2nd place instead of 1st. As a life partner, if you choose to marry them, then grow old with them, do the same sacrifice as they did, and take care each other in sickness and in well. I feel there was only him, who made the sacrifice and its pissed me off 😂😂😂.
I understand Africa living standard is not as "great" as the States or the European countries, and if you compare it to the countryside of Vietnam, compare it to some of the "ethnical" groups regions, it is not unbearable. Things get better when you accepted it. He had business going in Africa, thats awesome. Living in Vietnam now, not be able to start any business on your own and got stucked with this "economical" system, if I was him, I would come back to Africa also 😢.

Well that is not hard; it's to be expected. He's just another Vietnamese in Vietnam. In Senegal he stands out. More potential to earn like other Viets in the diaspora. To make it in Vietnam he has to be prepared to compete with well-established businesses and maybe have to pay bribes to open shop. Life in easier in Africa and the air is better for the lungs unless he lives in rural parts of Vietnam where he can't make a living then he can have all the fresh air he wants. His wife is a different story. Hard for her to just pick up and move just to support him.

Thank you for sharing Duong story with us all. I absolutely loved his honesty. However, I’m conflicted when it comes to thoughts of his wife. For a man who loves and lives a selfless life his wife appears to be the exact opposite, it seems she want to live a life of forever comfort and it doesn’t matter if her husband has to die to deliver just that!
Not to mention that Duong seem to have a pure love for his daughter that his wife use as leverage. I knew instantly when I held her voice the first time on camera it sound short and highly annoyed! Not her exact wording but something similar when she said “why would you say the light worked this morning when it didn’t work” zoom in on her face . It seem that she couldn’t get him back to Senegal any faster of which he boarded a plane back to Senegal the next day. I think Doung has been taken advantage of enough in life, he should be the one at home with his daughter enjoying the remainder of his life.
    🤦‍♀️ at his wife!!!
You’ll see just how hard life truly is... when Doung is no longer around b/c he worked himself to death. Wives are suppose to be helpmates not a stalemates!
Younger woman gives an older man a child
Older man spend the rest of his life repaying her.”

He hangs out with friends but at the end of the day, he goes back to an empty home and a solo life. For someone who loves his daughter so much, it must be so painful to think about her every day, wondering what she's doing and what she's learning. He's missed all the milestones in her life so far. It must hurt to know that he wasn't there when she first learned to talk, to walk, started first day of school, etc., etc. I hope one day he can make the choice that is best for him and that his friends and family will support him through it all.

Who's going to pay for education expenses? $$ doesn't grow on tree. The government are not going to feed you, ya know. It isn't like you can go on welfare or free medi-cal/caid or free financial aid education system liked in US with tax payers $$ expenses. Kyle Le Dot Net - It's nice to see Duong truly happy from his heart when he is in Vietnam to see his daughter and wife. I wish they could all live together happily, whether it be in Senegal or Vietnam, but I understand life has its obstacles that we must accept and face. Though it would be ideal for his wife to live with Duong in Senegal, I can sympathize with her choice.
It would be difficult for her to live in Senegal, she wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone since she doesn't know the language. And if Duong goes with her, how would be be able to work. And the daughter would also feel awkward when she goes to school in a classroom full of African kids. That's probably why she felt it best to stay in Vietnam.
Thanks for the update Kyle! I will remember these two videos forever and I wish Duong the best in the many years ahead.

Wow. He's so used to the life in Senegal, that despite the obvious higher quality of life in Vietnam and his love for his daughter and wife, he returns Home. Or, in the Vietnamese way of speaking, went back. That's so sad! The fate defeated his spirit. You can see it when he says that he doesn't dare to eat good oysters and rather eat the cheapest stuff. It's humility the extreme and IMO bad way. Of course his wife decided to stay home, she would be crazy to go with him. It's crazy and stupid for him to go back to Senegal. But it's also hard not to listen to one's heart.

How do you know the quality of life is better in Vietnam? You should visit Senegal.

OMG, look at the previous video and this video with him and compare how he lives. I don't talk about the overall quality.

Ok, I understand now because the way you said that before it looked like quality of life was higher in Vietnam.

Have you been to Africa? If so where? There is poverty in the UK like you would never believe existed and the people here are wicked.

Great video. My husband and I have rented rooms for working foreigners and they lived here in the States for years-leaving their spouse and children behind. Most are not welcome back because their family wants them to live here and support them while they sit on their asses. So on.. many of these men have girlfriends/mistresses, I wonder why.. Sad but true. People are envious, living life without truely understanding on how to live it to the fullest. He's a hard worker, n it's sad to see how far he is away from his child.

This was a nice update Kyle. I couldn't help but notice he seems so happy and at peace in Vietnam. Just like a whole different person.

get it from me. never waste your time if u r still single. U see this guy. At the back of his mind whats bothering him is being away from his family. U can be anywhere in the world and even survive a jungle if u r with your wife and kids. He loves africa and he wants to b there but wife isnt buying the idea. If he were single he would be far happier in africa and even marry one of the women there. So story for today kids is dont waste your single life. Work hard and achieve your goals as fast as u can and then slowly and carefully choose a wife that is willing to relocate anywhere with you.

Wei Liang maybe because her husband is only visiting and not staying in Vietnam with her and her daughter. I would be devastated if my husband ever have to work so far away like that......

It's duong's documentary, not her. Kyle didn't interview her or ask her directly. Most Vnese females are introvert and don't socialize much. Beside I"m sure his wife isn't well educated and not a good speaker/communicate either.

I am sad watching this. Life shouldn't be just about surviving and making money. I hope he finds happiness. It seems he is not in love with his wife and being with her is not important.

I agree with Mr. Duong..."
Miss Julie Dang no need to debate with those people head in the sand, dans l'enceinte de la ville HCM, les pays qui font partie de la Vietnam...

There are a lot of Chinese in Africa. China has been trading with Africa for 2 decades. He needs to move to China Town in Senegal to have a sense of belongings.

But business won't be as good for him in Chinatown would it? He must be a loner to not have as many contacts with people from his country as it appears to be in this video.

Nhan Dam he is not from China, Vietnam and China are not the same, that is like telling a white American to go and live where Germans are, just because they both have European ancestry

The Vietnamese don't really care for the Chinese. I know some who told me that. And I've seen at least one video on here where Vietnamese been asked who would they prefer and America (a former enemy) ranked higher than China.
