Daisy was not the person calling at the end of the film! It was clearly reveiled to be Nick calling Gatsby's line from Wall street while he was at work that day. Y'know what? Me too. Give me some Nick x Gatsby fanfics. I'm sure that romance would be better than the one between Gatsby and Daisy. At least a romance between Nick and Gatsby wouldn't involve infidelity and Nick wouldn't be too cowardly to admit his love for Gatsby. Hell, Nick loves Gatsby so much that he wrote a whole book about his time with him and didn't even attempt to hide the gay undertones.
Years ago my teacher confirmed that Nick was in love with Gatsby and it makes sense. He supports the affair with Daisy because he's living vicariously through her.
The book is more of a satire and political allegory than a tragic romance. All the Gatsby movies down through the years have gotten this wrong. This Gatsby actually comes closest to the larger points of the book, but that's not saying much. The book is well worth the read.
the skull... it's "then" not "than"... Also, you said that you haven't read The Great Gatsby, so how on earth would you know what I might enjoy reading? Are you suggesting that The Lovely Bones is also a satire? Because that was not my impression of it. Also - also, both The Lovely Bones and The Great Gatsby are works of fiction and although they contain scenes of sexual violence, they were not meant to be, nor are they, snuff pieces for the titillation of pervs. That you decided to imply that I was a perv, apparently based on my one innocuous reply, says far more about you than me. Based on the book, there is a theory that Nick is gay. Because when he's drunk he briefly mentions a naked guy in his bed. Nothing to do with the video, just something that I thought was interesting.
Oh I almost forgot about that! The elevator metaphor used with that is so incredibly detailed with the handle thing and then using the euphemisms to convey this idea. Magnificent.
“Also, one of the reasons this movie is 2 hours and 22 minutes long is that it takes 30 minutes for the title character to show up.” AT LEAST THAT’S TRUE TO THE BOOK. JAY GATSBY DIDN’T SHOW UP FOR LIKE....FIVE CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK. (And one of them was just name dropping and it was insufferable) Also that comment about the Gatsby/Carraway fanfic made me laugh. And if there isn’t an “Old Sport” bonus round, I will be sad.
Daisy was a complex, conflicted character. Right before she even married Tom, she received a letter from Gatsby that he was alive and coming for her, so she tried her very hardest to get out of the wedding and find him, but her mother forced her to marry Tom. When she explains to Nick that she wants her daughter to be a ""beautiful little fool" she's explaining how she wishes she didn't know about all of Tom's infidelities, and regrets marrying him. However, she can't just up and leave because she has to think of her daughter. And she can't just take her 2-5 year old and go live with Gatsby with her because that can be detrimental on a young child's mental health. Tbh, hated Myrtle more, but who wouldn't? Tom and Myrtle were ultimately the worst characters, especially since they work as a duo. This story is not meant to have a happy ending. It's not really a Romeo and Juliet, but can be compared to it. I just think Daisy needs a more specific analysis than just "thot", which is more Myrtle's title.
@@zayontoppp98 Do people hate Daisy now because she didn't end up with Gatsby? Like I said, she had a lot running through her mind. And most of her realizations come crashing down on her in the shirt throwing scene. She didn't even say "I don't love you anymore" herself to Tom. She was repeating Gatsby, who was urging her to say it so that he can continue his life with Daisy like he dreamed. Since The Great Gatsby revolves around this time period and uses it as a plot device for setting, you can understand the reasons for marriage. People still married for money. And since Gatsby was part of the "new money" crowd, it's conflicting to be with him because more people understood the old money. I'm mostly just repeating my English teacher at this point, but of you really analyze the story and understand the values of the time period, it all becomes much clearer.
@@kiwuwuwu Even if they did end up together, their "relationship" would still have been doomed because Gatsby didn't love the real Daisy, but what she represented.

Me too!!! Also why this video is kinda pissing me off because he keeps sinning things shown exactly how it was written. And it was written in the 1920s soooo... It is pretty historically accurate.
You missed a sin for one of the only era-appropriate songs played being Let's Misbehave - a song that didn't exist until 1928/29, despite the film being set in 1922. Oh, since I'm here - sin The Prestige.
16:21 Inaccurate sin? It shows him in his office answering a phone call at the start of the movie. He works in the bond business. It says this at the beginning.
Read this book in class this year. Watched this movie too Everyone kept saying this was bull cuz Nick and Gatsby are clearly gay for each other Ya know who was the strongest supporter of this theory? The teacher
I dont think Gatsby was gay for nick, maybe bi but he loved daisy. Nick is hinted to be gay. He wakes up in some guys couch/bed (I dont remember) at one point and theres that elevator scene with that photographer guy.
@George Corbul I read the book in 10th so the couch thing might not be accurate. But i do think the author was trying to say something in that scene. Yes people act silly when drunk but this is a book, and I feel like there was a reason the author included that scene and all that phallic imagery. Either way we cant be sure but personally that's what I got out of that scene. I think it adds a bit to his relationship with gatsby too. Or maybe I'm overanalyzing. They didnt include it in the movie so maybe it was not important after all.
They didn’t include a lot of details in the movie that were conducive to Nick’s character development. The phallic imagery is not as important as the fact he was in Mr. McKee’s room as he showed him his portfolio in his underwear then he wakes up in a train station. They were heavily implied to have slept together. Also, the book itself is extremely short so it’s worth noting that that whole scene wouldn’t have been in there for nothing. This better develops Nick’s role as an unreliable narrator as not only was he dedicated to Gatsby platonically, there was a level of unrequited love that he played off. As Tom says near the end of the book, he threw dust in Nick’s eyes just as he did Daisy’s. He used Nick’s unrelenting devotion to him to his advantage in order to fulfill his romantic idea of what his life was destined to be.
No-one ever seems to ask whether Daisy is even worthy of the devotion shown her...she's not fyi. There's your high school essay topic, don't use the movie btw
Or you know... the fact of the movie itself being bad at representing a character because a movie should stand as an inteligible work independent of source material.

1:08 Leo explained it. Adding hip hop to this movie was a key to let the viewers relate and feel closer to the film. I think it was a great idea, I really enjoyed it. In my opinion it suits the movie well.
As a lover of jazz music, I hated it at first, but I also understood why they chose to do it. Making a film relatable to the audience is always important, and music was a huge part of what made the 1920s so "roaring." For people born 70-80 years later, Aaron Copeland and foxtrot just aren't "roaring dance music."
Anthropolitan Metropomorphic technically you’re right but the book itself was released on 1925. Rhapsody was probably getting pretty popular during those times so I get why they added the song into it.
the yelling scene is important because it indicated Gatsby's status. A gentleman will never lose his temper, even at the worst times. However, Gatsby went haywire after being pushed, showing Daisy that he is only a commoner, and despite his money, will never be a noble. Daisy was only in love with Gatsby because he was everything she dreamed he was: noble, handsome, in love with her. But when the charade faded, she came to, and realized the truth. That's why she left.
Common misconception: Nick is not poor, hes old money also, daisy never called, that was nick as well(: lots of small plot errors and misanalysis of the movie. other than that i really enjoy you taking the time to do this!
"There hasn't been ONE shot of Nick being gainfully employed in this whole thing!" -- unless you wanna count all three of the scenes of Nick being gainfully employed in his stockbrokers office.
“Let’s all drunk-drive to Manhattan and get a hotel room so we can have the exact same conversation we’re having right now- and I’m starting to think this isn’t a very good book” -Peter Griffin
I think the general lesson was that the American Dream is fake and excess with no point is pointless. Or something like that. I enjoy it for Gatsby's tragedy.
I didn't mind this film. The vintage take on the opening logos was a nice touch and the techno-style music along with Gatsby's supercharged car gave the movie a dieselpunk feel. I don't think many people actually understood the artistic statement being made in those small details.

Ahhhh lol
Y'know what? Me too. Give me some Nick x Gatsby fanfics. I'm sure that romance would be better than the one between Gatsby and Daisy. At least a romance between Nick and Gatsby wouldn't involve infidelity and Nick wouldn't be too cowardly to admit his love for Gatsby. Hell, Nick loves Gatsby so much that he wrote a whole book about his time with him and didn't even attempt to hide the gay undertones.
This video is the reason I went to AO3 to read some
Years ago my teacher confirmed that Nick was in love with Gatsby and it makes sense. He supports the affair with Daisy because he's living vicariously through her.
I knew the 'Old Sport Bonus Round' was coming.

@@staystrongproject3428 WAAAAAAAYYY better than the movie.
@@ingridmarr3126 Less schmaltz than the movie.
Also - also - also... In case you're wondering if I'm "mad, bro" - no, mostly I'm feeling pity. Here's hoping that you at least scored a few points for provoking this reply. Have a nice day.

@@rasengan1544 Me too, it's really weird when that happens, you say something long enough and it starts sounding strange.
12:53 Jordan says in her tea discussion with Nick that Gatsby's parties were thrown in hopes that Daisy would notice and/or would show up randomly one night.
Very true, though the point he made after it does still make some sense to me xD
I was getting suspicious when they hardly sinned “old sport” but I realised that they would have to do a bonus round.
Based on the book, there is a theory that Nick is gay. Because when he's drunk he briefly mentions a naked guy in his bed. Nothing to do with the video, just something that I thought was interesting.
Also, you know, the entire book in which he’s obsessed with Gatsby.
Being gay isn't even a little bit interesting.
Tbh who doesn’t know about this theory?
The novel is much more important.
Oh I almost forgot about that! The elevator metaphor used with that is so incredibly detailed with the handle thing and then using the euphemisms to convey this idea. Magnificent.
“Also, one of the reasons this movie is 2 hours and 22 minutes long is that it takes 30 minutes for the title character to show up.”
AT LEAST THAT’S TRUE TO THE BOOK. JAY GATSBY DIDN’T SHOW UP FOR LIKE....FIVE CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK. (And one of them was just name dropping and it was insufferable)
Also that comment about the Gatsby/Carraway fanfic made me laugh.
And if there isn’t an “Old Sport” bonus round, I will be sad.
Daisy was the OG THOT
Fucking Gold digging Huwaah!!
Hate that character to the bone.
I just think Daisy needs a more specific analysis than just "thot", which is more Myrtle's title.
kyra jean she belongs to the streets

Everyone kept saying this was bull cuz Nick and Gatsby are clearly gay for each other
Ya know who was the strongest supporter of this theory?
The teacher
[insert gif of Gatsby Leo raising his martini glass amid a blast of fireworks]
I don’t think that happened in Great Gatsby. Didn’t Holden Caufield wake up on some guy’s couch in Catcher in the Rye?
Sins guy is into Hamilton. Couldn't have scripted it better myself

Some of these sins show a real lack of understanding of Gatsby
Or you know... the fact of the movie itself being bad at representing a character because a movie should stand as an inteligible work independent of source material.

1:08 Leo explained it. Adding hip hop to this movie was a key to let the viewers relate and feel closer to the film. I think it was a great idea, I really enjoyed it. In my opinion it suits the movie well.
I wasn't crazy about the music, it seemed artificial. But then again Gatsby's world is artificial so perhaps that was the point.
As a lover of jazz music, I hated it at first, but I also understood why they chose to do it. Making a film relatable to the audience is always important, and music was a huge part of what made the 1920s so "roaring." For people born 70-80 years later, Aaron Copeland and foxtrot just aren't "roaring dance music."

the yelling scene is important because it indicated Gatsby's status.
