Can Families Help Prevent Tragedy? “The family of the gunman who killed 18 people last week in Maine contacted police with concerns about his mental health and access to guns more than five months before the massacre, according to their local sheriff.”
    Listen to families!!!!
    TIME magazine:
Five months before the deadliest mass shooting in Maine’s history, the gunman’s family alerted the local sheriff that they were becoming concerned about his deteriorating mental health while he had access to firearms, authorities said Monday.
The Harris Project (see Episode 53) and the national PSA film, “You Don’t Know the Half of It,”
The film will be shown to policymakers in Washington, DC and has the support of social media influencers. the harris project hopes the film not only raises awareness for co-occurring disorders but also jumpstarts system transformation nationwide.
A listener asks: What is your relationship like with your son - NOW?
“How was it before he was sick - not how was he - but how were you all as mother and son? How has it changed? How are you mother and son now?
I’d love to hear how you three women have learned to cope specifically with this - not the medicine, the addictions, the system, policies, laws, judicial system, stigmas - but how did you live through this and cope with the loss?”

I have all three of your books! My son was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2013. He was 25 years old. We just celebrated his 36th birthday. I'm grateful for him. He is my Wonder boy. I love him so much. This illness is like a death to us. He's here but not here in some ways. I wish people could understand this, that we feel like we've lost a child.

My sadness is the years my son has gone without feeling love toward others, or seeking love.....he's caught up in fears, delusions and loneliness. My heart just breaks for him. I still have hope, however, that AI will quicken progress toward a cure.

@ Mindy. We also struggle with my sons medication causing massive weight gain. It's heartbreaking because I want him to be stable but then we deal with him being depressed about his body.

People who’ve had a seizure have their drivers license revoked for a minimum of 6 months and must be cleared by the neurologist before they can drive. It’s taken from them in the ER. IMO those that have had psychosis should have similar restrictions especially surrounding firearms.

I love that essay, Welcome to Holland. It's one of the most poignant things I've ever read. And my son having schizophrenia, I can relate.

"At Mulholland’s arraignment, his mother Tonya White testified that he has an IQ of 57 and receives disability payments. She told the court she had repeatedly approached both law enforcement and her son’s counselors at Northwestern Counseling & Support Services about the fact that he carried a handgun. Both said nothing could legally be done to stop him." St. Albans messenger news paper. Vermont Laws 😡
This could have been prevented 😢

Cher (the singer) was in court in California yesterday attempting to get conservatorship over her 47 year old son. It seems he has a sad history of serious addiction and possible mental illness. It didn't go well for Cher, whch may turnout to be very unfortunate for her son.

Exactly it took a violent act from my son and hundreds of calls to police mental health services did not take me serious till now . The police need to taught about mental health services behaviors etc then maybe then they will take it serious
