I recall this Cuban woman who I met who was very light skinned, and she made a point of claiming that her family had no African blood in their family tree. Said she was all Castilian in background. I'm an American black man, but I was shocked that she said it like that. "Absolutely no African blood", and said it with no prompting from me. Seemed a little too proud to make that claim. I tried to play it off, but I know that many of the original Cuban refugees fleeing Castro were the lighter skinned property owners. And the folks who remained in Cuba were the darker skinned people, who were also poorer. That's the way many of the Miami Cubans are, very conscious of their skin color. Gil seems obsessed with that also, even though he's as dark or darker than many of us American blacks who have African ancestors! Just a tragic situation. And Gil didn't really apologize. Just dodged

However, Rob Parker from "The Odd Couple" podcast shed some light on this by mentioning that both of Gilbert's parents are from Cuba, making Gilbert Cuban rather than African American. Unfortunately, many brainwashed and self-hating Caribbean individuals share and express similar racist views to Gilbert's. I believe that Black Americans should distance themselves from Gilbert and other individuals who, while pretending to be part of the community and benefiting from its culture, simultaneously promote harmful self-hatred towards other Black people around the world.

I was watching the game and many of us who know basketball, know that in reality the US was not playing to destroy South Sudan. I think the US players wanted to show a lot of respect to an upcoming team. The way they exchanged hugs at the end of the game shows you that. The NBA players didn't want to be seen as arrogant and looking down to their openents.... much different than Gilbert Arenes. That said, I am sure if the US meets South Sudan again, they may win with a big margin.
