Unabashedly bawling my eyes out in my car to this song, wanting so bad to bring back the remembrance of my divinity. To be able to bare myself to the world without shame and to be accepted for all that I am and loved without prejudice. I am an eternal being of divinity worthy of love for self and worthy to give love to others.
Alanis Morissette spent over a year touring and promoting her 1995 album “Jagged Little Pill,” which burned her out both physically and emotionally. For the next year and a half, she took time off to decompress and re-evaluate. “Thank U” (1998) is her reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success. She explained : “I felt that I lived in a culture that told me that I had to consistently and constantly look outside myself to feel this elusive bliss. And I achieved a lot of what society had told me to achieve and I still didn’t feel peaceful. I started questioning everything, and I realized that actually everything was AN ILLUSION and it was scary for me because everything I had believed in was dissolving in front of me and there was a death of sorts, a really beautiful one ultimately, but at first a very scary one, and so I stopped. I stopped for the first time and I was overcome with a huge sense of COMPASSION for myself first, and then naturally that translated into my feeling and compassion for everyone around me and a huge amount of GRATITUDE that I had never felt before to this extent. And that’s why I had to write this song, ‘Thank U,’ because I had to express how exciting this was and how scary it was and all these opportunities for us to define who we are.” Disillusionment, frailty and silence are among the things and feelings Morissette thanks in this song, but at the top of her list is INDIA, where she spent time in 1997. Her trip was enlightening and gave her some of the ideas for “Thank U.” THANK U FOR YOUR WISDOM, ALANIS‼️ 💙🇮🇳🩷
My dear mama passed away on January 7, 1999. About a month after she passed, this song came on MTV. When she sang, "Thank you Silence" I felt my Mama inside of me, and I heard her sweet voice telling me, "That's where I am now, sweetheart. I'm in the Silence." All these years later, and it is bringing those cleansing tears!
So many people missed the true meaning of this powerful song. It really did just fall thru the cracks in the music world. A true heartfelt classic by a true artist. Thank you
How could I know every lyric to this song and sing along for twenty years, and suddenly on a super heavy day when my heart is profoundly broken, this song comes on out of nowhere and for the very first time I realize what is actually being said? This song is sacred. Thank you synchronicity.
Arrived at that moment yesterday - Listening to it for ages, now finally realizing that Alanis must have been, back then, where I'm now... Never even knew what the Thank you India line was meant to mean. India what? Why? Because India = Life! Life is easy. That's why people start to complicate it. Because easy is essentially boring, unless you start actually living! Thank you Life Force, thank you Universe, thank you living Cosmos ^^
I am a Sowetan and Alanis really resonated with me through this song when she released this album. I didn't care being called a coconut. Funnily I was exposed to 'our music'. I just resonated differently, so I feel you nja yami❤
Considering all that I have been through in my 56 yrs on this Rock... Active Addiction.. HEP C..Heart Attack..now Cancer..this has so much more meaning to me, as with other Spiritual Songs.. The Lyric "Now about not equating Death with stopping" is still hard to practice and imagine. I died. For 10 minutes. I did not see any "Bright Light" nor My Parents or my Brother. But......................I'm gonna try to make peace with My God (mine as I believe, not organized religions), and live the rest of my life in Amazement of it..
'Lyrically, the song documents the singer's spiritual awakenings, resultant from her trip to India, as well as other physical and internal journeys. In "Thank U", Alanis expresses the heartfelt gratitude, inspiration and compassion, which she felt at the time she wrote it'
+xoxGeordie66xox If you knew all of her music she has always been spiritual awaken that is why her music is heartfelt and totally in touch with reality.
Agreed, Feel the same about the song and the lyrics. Whatever happens in our LIfes, can either dragg us down or show us sth we can be inspired for the rest of our days.
I don't always like ppl underestimating other ppls age. You could not have a full understanding of everything that's going on in the world. but you still understand some certain things. No, I don't doubt there's teens out here that could listen to this & pick up on the sarcasm & something f'd up. I know, bc I was one of them. If you weren't, that's on you. Some of what she's mentioning isn't even that complex & deep. She's just being thougtful. Which that alone, I'm sure others lack.. - I pulled this song out my ass. It's been yrs. Nothing triggered me here. I just remember it
My son turns 30 today! We have gone through so much, the death of his dad at age 10, my emotional breakdown when he was a senior in High School, all the dysfunction and pain...made us stronger and thankful for where we are now. I love this Song!
La canzone madre che mi ha introdotto nel mondo di Alanis Morissette, una canzone con una forza di attrazione incredibile. Grazie Alanis, per sempre. God bless you
Alanis your song got me through a bad breakup while in college. I listened to this song over and over. I don’t how many times. I was a crying mess. That’s how how powerful your words are in this song. Love 🩷 this song so much! One of my favs!!!!
Thank you for sharing the lyrics. After praying one night for clarity and guidance, I woke up with this song in my head. I hadn't listened to it in years. Listening to it now, I understand and appreciate it in an entirely new way.
Similar experience for me. Hadn’t listened to it in at least ten years, probably more like twenty plus. Woke up early for work one day and had been struggling with feeling grateful in general (which is important for me and my wife/kids because I am a recovering addict whom they rely heavily on to provide stability) I have been working 10.5-11 hour shifts five days a week for almost a year now, haven’t taken a single day off since accepting this new career opportunity, and am sleeping poorly because I have untreated severe obstructive sleep apnea… in short I have been feeling burnt out and was in a funk. The negativity had crept in almost without me having realized it. I woke up one morning at 4 am for work recently and had been having a dream in which this song had been playing and felt a strong need to listen to it while getting ready. I was singing along at first but it didn’t take long before I was struggling to get the words out because it hit me so hard I started crying. Such a beautiful song, a work of art really. I’ve been listening to it at least weekly since to try to keep my mind right.
@@jonathancrass1253 I see you just posted this 3 days ago, and wanted to let you know that I’m feeling it today too, 25 years after this song came out! Oh, there's someone out there still writing meaningful songs, if you go digging real deep. Just, you know, don't ever bother going to look for them in the pop charts anymore. They don't trade in art or meaning anymore.
I truly FEEL with the lyrics and the tunes ... It has its own special depth, saying that everything starts and ends within ourselves. Inside us. Being grateful, thankful and humble is part of that process, too. TA :)
I heard her sing this live at Woodstock 1999. What an experience. I had gone to this event and this song really got to me. I was only 2 years away from an awful life experience I had that I thought I would never get over. This weekend I met so many great people and this song for whatever reason I knew things were going to be ok which they ended up being and I was able to start to heal.

This particular song exhibits quite intense, just as Alanis is herself actually very intense the realities of life that are in fact hardcore and even hard for some to even grasp. Alanis Morrrisette is hardcore anyway and extremely open-minded. She's built like that. And full-circle thinking if one might attain, and sees the things that make us human. And LOVE as the greatest thing that could ever be. And human nature as the greatest tragedy that we can become. Thank you, Alanis for just being you.......
Listening to this after getting out of a very toxic relationship for the first time since I was a teenager Now the words all mean something different to me. I have gained perspective and it's so much more profound. A beautiful song about letting bad things go and loving yourself. I'm glad I went through what I went through so I can finally find this feeling. Loving yourself enough to let things go.
I totally agree with last comment I new the words but never thought about actually listening to them and at a low time In life it came on the radio and just listened and it changed the way I was thinking and gave me a positive mind frame to pick my self up and move on xx I love her music so much and she's naturally beautiful
Listened to this when i was a child so now and then. But now that im 30 and had a lot of bad experience in life. I can see this lyrics are insane well done.

You ARE worthy Timothy! Your message tells me that you are humbly aware of your flaws, and this penitent attitude is so precious and perfect - the way God can enter into your circumstances and transform them and you if you are in this place of surrendering all. Peace and joy to you 🙏
