The TDF of old had huge percentage of gravel!
……..1924 ……..
Yup, but its great to see it being kept alive, same with the cobbles, they seem to vanish from the itinerary for quite a few years , didn't Froome fall off one year and Nibali won the Tour that year.
! rode a gravel section in a road race once, with 23mm tires, 140 psi, and a cheap all steel road bike. Apart from an uncomfortable, and rather slow pace, it was sufferable. I'm not surprised they included it, but I'm sure the competitors will breathe a sigh of relief when this homage to the past, and the cool new trend, is over with.
They're gonna all ride likely 30mm
Can't wait hope 🌧🌧🌧
Not enough climbing for the gravel to make much of a difference, I bet.
Going to be the Pogacar / Evenepoel day...but mostly because they are more used to classics style racing in terms of pack management.
Unfortunately, I just dont see how this will be very interesting unless there is some rain.
This will be a lot more interesting then 200km flat stage! what about Van Aert? what about Van der Poel?
I personally think the complete opposite, it’s a king stage and it’s an out and back course, it’s a difficult stage to manage. It will be filled with drama. It will be won my a breakaway and I’m thinking Ben Healy.
I say Pogacar or Pidcock, 1st and 4th in this years Strade Bianche.
Don’t count out reining World Road and Cyclocross champion, MVDP!
Thank you for the terrific preview! It looks like an exciting stage, though I feel like they put the riders through too much already.
Gravel or cobbles is fine as long as it is safe enough for the cyclists. Yesterday another tour rider died on a steep descent. Cycling has become too fast and dangerous asa sport. Vingegaard could have died a few months ago in his big crash.
Your team car might not be able to get to you, but as team leader, your team will give you their bike until they can get to you for a proper switch
Thanks, I was wondering if that was possible.
Agree w the gravel stage, it's a test of versatility of the rider, the team and the bikes.
There'll be abrupt be very crucial and significant change in the gc standings.
No there won’t. They will remain a peloton.
Stage 9 should go full retro; no team cars, and riders carry their own spares. Today it will be MVDP, WVA, maybe Tom Pidcock; Remco will be solid as well, but won’t be able to drop Pogi.
This isn't cyclocross
I got like 30% of my total mileage on gravel (living in rural area "forces" one to use gravel often even just to get to tarmac) but these small patches seems... either too little (for real gravel "experience" - first hour is fiiiiiine, 2nd or 3rd hour on gravel is where "fun begins") or too much (big chance for "luck" (puncture or mass strike) to do damage). IF nothing big happens, one just would consider it as "alternative" cobble section (on "rough" gravel feel is same)
Where is Dan Lloyd??? - the team this year is looking very, very weak without him. Please get some strong ex world tour riders to reinforce the commentary and the analysis. Robbie McEwen gets more and more dull, Adam Blythe really isn’t insightful enough and Danni Rowe is just plain dull and sadly lacks the necessary experience. You really want to force us to pay £15 per month for the Discovery+ and Eurosport combo??? - a huge increase from the past situation where we only had to pay for the Eurosport app - this cost increase demands a huge improvement in the quality of commentary.
lol just be glad it’s not peacock. Those two old farts are terrible and TeeJay Vangardren is maybe the worst ever.
Sounds like you could do a better job! Cheer up, you torn-faced whiner.
Dan Lloyd is no longer with Discovery/Eurosport. GCN got taken private and is no longer owned by Discovery, so Dan is now back doing GCN content and not commenting
I don’t have a problem with Adam, Robbie or Danni, but I would like to hear Pippa York commentating more often.
But so long as they don’t use Brian Smith I will be happy.
@@J-cz7yvterrible take, Phil is the goat.
Wonder why very little live coverage of TDF? Wimbledon and Euro Cupa are both live and viewed in North America…but not any Live TDF??
Bad decision
Will the riders swap out bikes? FWIW, even though I ride gravel, this shouldn’t be allowed in the TDF if it can wreck a racer’s tour.
Who wants a race win determined by luck? If you want to watch gravel races they exist, MTB races exist too, as does cyclocross etc.
putting road cyclists on a road bike onto a gravel surface so that luck could trump ability, training or anything else smacks of bored humans looking to be entertained at the expense of the cyclists and the sport.
To win the greatest bike race on earth you should have to ride on all surfaces
Sagan would thrive in the gravel.
Who will be the next Sagan ?
Sure he would. Ten years ago.
He hasn’t been head and shoulders strong for at least 5 years.
@@danielkaminske5048Part of the reason is probably that he isn’t even racing anymore😂
@@Knofris he raced this year on the road. Nice try at sounding correct though.
@@danielkaminske5048 He’s cruising to retirement after having heart surgeries, that’s not racing, nice try at sounding correct though.
Back to the Roots
Hypppedddd!!!
No one is buying road racing bikes...you have to work too hard ..the LA days are gone ...gravel sells bikes to everyone......it is a business after all...they are pros paid to ride their bikes to SELL Product
Dumb question maybe, but do the riders use special gravel bikes for these sections? Seems like they have real skinny treads in that last race vid. like they are just using regular road bikes
road bikes, most will use bigger 32mm tires now is what I heard though, not too skinny
Not a dumb question, but it's fine white gravel. Gravel bikes are closer to cyclocross bikes and are meant for more rugged terrain than these riders will face. Additionally, most of the stage is on pavement. They'll be riding standard road bikes with wider tires. 28 - 30mm tubeless tires (puncture resistant) are typically used in the Strade Bianche, which has more gravel than tomorrow's stage. T
Today road racing bike don't have real skinny treads, There is a youtube video talking about this year tour bike, they measure and TP bike have 30-31mm tire and JV have 29-30mm! they day of 22-23mm tire with 110psi is ancient history
…and will run inserts for sure. It’s going to shake up the GC!
Why isn’t jonas racing this year 👎 looks like it’s between pogi and remco
A stage made for Van Del Poel or Van Art
For me riding gravel is not harder than riding tarmac it's just more random in terms of punctures, so it's more about luck than power and technique. Not a big fan of this stage.
Tadejs about to destroy his rivals on gravel
Nibali 2014 cobbles stage
Maybe Biniam's day
Wout getting a free ride around France this year - doing F all to help the team.
Luck can mean who wins gc
This gravel stage sdnt be in a gt
Hope bini Girmay black diamond is going well in stage 9 African Hero 🎉🎉🎉
His only goal is to finish
not a sprint stage
this is gonna be carnage!
this stage belongs to van der poel
A mini Strade Bianchi!
Bring on the hard men...
This is a terrible idea. Road bikes uphill on dirt and gravel? Seriously stupid and pointless.
The tour could be won here. It is unlikely but if one of the top 4 have an outstanding day while the others suffer it could be huge. Good chance someone loses big time tomorrow. I just hope everyone finishes safely.
The tour could be lost here, as well. If one of the top 4 guys either have a serious mechanical - or crash - it could be over for them.
Look at 2014 stage 5. Nibali absolutely destroyed his rivals on it
Baloney. If vingegaard fails here, pogacar wins tour
Stupid stage
How evil is the person who decides the stages of the Tour. Let’s go up the side of mountains, or tell you what let’s do gravel in the middle of a heatwave. Mehehehehehehehe!!!!
Favourites: pidcock, wva and mvdp i guess
The only rider who is favorite is the one who is the luckiest. This is a ridiculous stage.
Pogacar and Pedersen more then pidcock
@@Marques127 Pedersen is out. He didn’t start stage 8 following his crash earlier in the week
Pogacar won the 2024 Strade Bianche, so he has to be the favorite.
@@ElSantoLuchador it will probably be decided by who is the most lucky.
Get rid of kirby ffs
Blasphemy! Kirby best commentator in the business!
@@FromTheFens219 he's a f*ckin clown
Finally, a proper cycling surface
Bike brands be selling more gravel bikes.
Lmao pogue not in strade bianca hahahahhahaha
Wva bad luck again. He must stay w vingegaard, tho he cd win this stage
Putting my imaginary money in MVDP.
😂
MvdP rocks. He's the man for this terrain.
So when is the fat-tire stage? How about an ebike stage? That would be fun to watch as well. Why not a bmx time trial with mud and berms?
I hope it’s a total fiasco
MVDP!
9stages and only 1stage with mountains?? i think giro is much harder than tdf and now gravel, wtf
Hell yes, I told friends to watch the tour after the first week, the past two days, just garbage they should have had breakaways in the rain today!!! Disgraceful! Looking forward to the gravel!!!
Pogacar won the 2024 Strade Bianche. I know that anything could happen, but he has to be the favorite for the stage win.
Gravel in the TdF = ignorant
They sold the next Stage to sprinters. The 2024 Tour de France sucks. Bottom!
If i want to watch cycling on gravel i will watch cyclo cross or mountain biking thank you very little. i still don't think this benefits the riders or the Tour any at all. All it will do is cause unnecessary crashes and other issues. decisions like this is why i lost interest in road cycling at all
Youre still watching videos and commentating. Doesnt sound too disinterested
Mr. Annoying. M'out.
Where’s the PPE. Absolutely ridiculous. Getting too commercial. Stick to the road
Should never have gravel at the TDF its a bloody road race!.
It's on a road😂
@@peteravolio2695 yes a gravel road lol
@@stevenfreeman7798 love the gravel
@@peteravolio2695 gravel is great fun but not for road racers a lot of them hate it that's why it should be separate. Gravel deserves its own races!.
@stevenfreeman7798 There is precedent for these surfaces in the tour and other road races. Just saying
As much show as it can bring, gravel stages in grand tours is totally out of sort in modern cycling, and unnecessary to make it interesting.
Maybe unnecessary to make it interesting, but it will definitely make it more interesting. Right or wrong, it could have a huge impact on the general classification.
I have to say the route wasn't that dangerous and it all went smoothly for most riders. What a great stage!
Luck can mean who wins gc
