Nice Shad! I love hema, and i focus myself on one handed swords, rapier,sabre,broadsword and arming sword throw in shields in there aswell, and i think Shad you are still doing hema!!, i know you kinda shy away from saying your an expert or whatever but this is hema, everyone in hema does some bit of "making stuff up" as long as it reliably works in sparring and competition it is good, and it still is part of hema, but note must be taken to the original sources not to just be a complete frame by frame copy, but more as to guide you in direction you need to move. Now if we had video footage of the famous fencing master Fiore dei Liberi for example he wouldnt look every frame exacty the same as his books... but the tendency of his style would shine through, so reading original sources and learning from other hema instructors shouldnt be as to copy them in every single way but to first learn the basic techniques and the general idea of the given art, and then you will always come up with your own variations of said art. This is how all martial arts work not just hema.

@@trentweston8306 sharp or for practice? The rawlings synthetic isnt bad for practice, i think most people though get custom broadswords... i hear the hanwei sharp one isnt that bad either, again most high end broadswords seem to be custom made...jesse belskey is a good baskehilt maker.

e.g. The ArmorClass does an excellent for training I would suggest Armour Class Dragoon Sword with a Feder Blade. This was first thought up by Stephen Hand of Stoccata and Jay Maas of Manitoba Broadsword Academy asked for further changes but I have only used the first gen and it is beautiful to use.

Knowing the name is useful so that you can refer to it efficiently. If you can say "dragon's claw strike" instead of "you know, that move where you slash from a high stance downward while holding the blade angled like [holds hand in a certain alignment] this," it makes it a lot easier to discuss.
Yup, that’s really the purpose of any jargon. Ease of communication of complex concepts.
It would be cool if there was a HEMA card game with the guards' names, with illustrations obviously.

This is a good example of the problem I have in most things I am self taught in. Because I was self taught, I never needed to know words, I just incorporated the actions at a different level of cognition. This of course means however that I am completely incapable of talking to anyone about it, and can only prove my mastery of skills through demonstration.
It's really annoying, because I can't market the skills I am self taught without having to relearn it all over again with the jargon. It's quite frustrating. Even more so because I understand the problem. lmao.
HEMA is one area where I don't have this problem though. I'm just not good with remembering German words.

Nice! To be honest I don’t find any problem when bigger RUclipsrs go for this kind of videos, I think HEMA can only greatly benefit from this.
I think you also did pretty well in many occasions (in terms of passing informations) considering the limitations of the training equipment.
If you don’t mind I would only point out that one of the best things to decrease doubles and build up a solid system of practice is to go for Parry and Riposte before moving toward same tempo actions, which need a very high level of skill to land cleanly!

Is is actually how many HEMA schools started, in his home state of Victoria there are at least five schools that were started under that very issue. One of those schools encouraged others to start schools, who then encouraged their own to do so as well, we now have fourth generation schools in Melbourne right now.
@@snimmo Our own school in Wellington, New Zealand was started for the same reason. Our instructor wanted someone to fight with, so he decided he would have to train them himself 8)
1st thing: Guys, get some fencing masks. Head is usually the primary target for attacks, so it will be beneficial when you won't need to worry about not hitting your sparring-partner in the head too hard. Actually, scratch that - first, get jockstraps, then masks, and then maybe some gloves.
2ndly, personally, I'd use a more systhematic approach, because now You are giving pieces of knowledge that aren't rooted into basics. What I mean by that is, before You show how to disengage and cut on the other side when the opponent overswings, You may want to show how to make a good cut in the first place. Let youself be hit a few times with a specific cut, to make sure the attack is well prformed, and then show how to deal with this kind of attack. Even before this, start with more basic basics, as stepping forward, stepping backward, maintaining distance - you may stand in place when practising specific techniques, but don't be static when you sparr. The one who moves, alive is. Last of basics: how to perform an attack when Your right foot is forward, and how to do int with left foot forward - what hands do, what legs do, what rest of the body does.
3rd thing: Keeping my fingers crossed for Shad HEMA club to work out :)

I kept saying that as I watched, "you haven't taught him the basics that he can build on before you can spar". You need to know how to step, basic cuts and how to properly execute them, and basic guards as they give you the framework to build and hang information off.
The guards in HEMA systems are so important as most of your cuts, blocks and parries are the transition from one guard to another.
I agree. The lack of masks is begging to get one's eyes blackened, or plain out removed.
As for what passes for a pedagogy here? There is a dreadful lack of anything resembling a sensical training approach; crawl, walk, run. It works for post-secondary education, the military, and historical fencing.

I’d love to see these guys every so often to see how they grow as swordsmen and watch their progression. I’ve never actually taken part in sword fights or anything but its very entertaining and looks very fun.
I don't hate you. You're actually my favorite of the medieval history youtubers. I do have a small bit of criticism to offer. I would like to suggest safety glasses. I realize that hardly anyone wears them when using foam swords, and many people might criticize me for even suggesting it, but getting hit in the eye with a foam sword still hurts (I know from experience). Just, you know, safety first.

Yep, basic "play" philosophy, if someone can't win at least 1/6 times, they start getting discouraged and eventually give up, so building confidence is essential to growing a hobby.
That's why me and my mates usually just attempt to hit and counter each other without keeping much score, because there's no point to keeping score we just want to get the techniques down
I'm a bit pedantic, so I'll just chime in that it's closer to 30% of the time, from what I hear ;)

From studying George Silver in particular (but by no means only him,) I understand that one does not, in fact, win a sword fight by sticking the pointy end into the other man. One wins a sword fight by ending the day with the same number of holes in one's body as one began the day.

@@justanotherfool8896 Idk, I mastered the art of roll catching with the claymore and I usually beat everyone I fight against. I mean, I'm kinda bad, to be honest, except with the claymore. That's like my only weapon, lmao.
Shad, as a starting instructor, I see a potential pitfall with your stance on names: Communication. For the longest time I was very much of the same mind as you when it came to the names of different strikes and guards. I did not care too much about what they were called as long as I could learn the techniques and commit them to memory and as long as you are just a student you can get away with that. No problem.
Afterall, names are meaningless in a fight. As long as I know what I want to do things will be alright. In a fight I am certainly not going to talk about what I plan to do to my opponent, that information I try to keep to myself as much as possible. If you are just practicing you don’t need much of a vocabulary. Same goes when you are teaching one other person. In personal lessons there is a lot of time to correct the one student and point things out.
However, that all changed when I stated to instruct. All of a sudden, my mental catalogue of nameless but applicable techniques became a gigantic nuisance in instructing. There is a point were talking about “this” move and then “that movement” is just not sufficient to properly convey what you are trying to say. It was a lot more efficient to be able to say something along the lines of “we are looking at ways to counter a Passade.” Instead of “we are going to take a look at a technique that you can use when your opponent makes a lunge at you and then follows that lunge up by taking a step forward with his left foot to get closer to you and prevent you from retreating.” (I teach rapier, not longsword.)
My point here is simply that a naming scheme is useful. One word can encapsule a complete technique, making it a lot easier to talk about movement, stance and counters. All in all, it is just a lot more efficient to have a vocabulary that enables you to express yourself better and to make sure everyone is thinking of the same thing at the same time.
Not to say that you cannot teach fencing without a naming scheme but just be aware that if you don’t have a set of “code words” teaching bigger groups will be more difficult and it opens up a Pandora’s box of possibilities for miscommunication.

That was my immediate thought at that point in the vid ad well, and I never trained fighting in my life.
Having fancy names likev"Strike of the claw of the dying swan" is stupid of course. Shouting your technique during combat is worse, only for goofy role players and manga card games.
But at least knowing short practical names for each technique is necessary for teaching the movements. Same goes in strategy: "pincer maneuver" or "troyan horse" are two words and makes detail descriptions unnecessary.
Only bad thing is that it's all swordbabble to outsiders.

Not a HEMA guy, but some one who has had to instruct other things, and taken various kinds of fighting training, as the practitioner/student names are what ever. When instructing things... or trying to reaserch them later for more info and context, names are rather useful.

I think Ben should take more advantage of his size when he is going on the offense and try for more distance on the defense.
you should make this a monthly or semi-monthly thing, where you pick up with your squires, teach them new things, watch them humiliate themselves, and then send them back to practice
Knowing the terminology makes it far easier when teaching larger groups because you can call out a guard, stance, or cut and they'll do it. It also makes it easier for analysis because you can say "they made an unterhau from Vomtag into ochs and thrusted into the opening on the chest" instead of "you went here here and here"
lol Shad is absolutely loving being the best swordfighter out of that group, don't lie he loves it :) he reminds me of a child who's really good at pool or some other game and wants to school all his friends on their playdate by "teaching" them

I've been training at my local fencing academy in historical fencing and broadsword fighting for over 8 years now. My biggest piece of advice for you, Shad, is to teach your knights to really get down the parries. In a real life or death fight, your too priority is to not get hit, and only attack when you know you're safe. A lot of people in sport these days fight simply to see who can hit first, regardless of if you will still take a blow yourself immediately after landing your attack. I personally think it would be very beneficial if you guys tried to fight to protect yourself above all else rather than to race to the first hit. I know that when I made that switch in my own fighting, I improved quite a bit.
I get it, that the main thing for some people is to have fun, and that's all cool, I just figured I would offer some advice since you guys seem to be training to improve. Wish y'all the best of luck.
Totally agree. I tell newbies to swordsmanship, hitting is easy. Not getting hit is hard. And hitting while not getting hit is the gold standard!
Yep. When a threat is presented, you have to deal with it no matter what it is. There is a kind of defense in attacking, at least while the attack is headed towards the other guy, in that the other guy has to deal with whats about to happen before thinking about hitting you. Yeah, that sometimes means recognizing a feint and going for the split second opening, but I'd say on balance its usually a direct attack you're dealing with and you'll need to void or parry. I like Shad a lot but this stuff looks more like sports HEMA than the intended application of many HEMA traditions: dueling to maim and disable with sharp swords. Dont get me wrong: I love sports HEMA, but I feel like Shad would gravitate more to the context in which this stuff was developed, not the state of it today.
Oz, ironically enough, was doing some fencing (Italian rapier for more accuracy) forms. The off hand should be held around head hit to swat away the opponent's blade. His dab was close to that!
Shad makes these things look like so much fun and entertaining thing to experience, I would love to try this out someday if I ever get a chance

Shad. Ignore the those haters. Easy for me to say, I know. You want to read comments and engage with your audience, so you inevitably come across the haters. I get it. But please, just ignore them. Like you said, they're just sad and don't have anything better to do in life.

I have to say, I love Oz. His one/two liners always hit.
Footwork, footwork, footwork! Ben was the only one that initially used his feet as part of the sparring. Stepping into strikes, or stepping away from an opponents strike and then stepping back in for your own strike can go a long way. While Ben may have had more practice, what really put him above the rest was moving around.
A side note: sparring in armor would be beneficial in two ways. First you learn were the weaknesses in your armor are, and second you can use that knowledge to exploit the weakness in an opponent in the same armor. A lot of the hits in this video would have been negligible for someone wearing chainmail, and even less for someone in full plate. Heck I'd say 90% of the double strikes would have been eliminated with a sturdy pair of gauntlets and a good helmet. It's my biggest beef with how hits are counted in some HEMA competitions. A hit on an unarmored or lightly armored opponent could easily have been meaningless on a more armored opponent. With chainmail and a gambeson a strike/cut to the arm would feel like a light to medium punch. Yes, you don't want to take any hits, but if I need to take a punch to the arm to shove my rondel into your chest it's a trade off I'm more then happy with.
Yes, avoiding getting hit is great, but understanding your own armor and taking hits to land blows that will kill or incapacitate the opponent is even better. Of course it all depends on the weapon your opponent has and the armor you and your opponent are wearing.
I don't really get what you mean as most of HEMA represents unarmored dueling.
Armoured fighting and unarmoured fighting are two different things. Some of the basics are the same, but alot changes.
Most HEMA is representative of unarmoured dueling, with armour worn as a safety measure, not representative of armour, just there to make sure you don't get damaged. You can do armoured fighting, but then the armour you're wearing is armour, and you then have to know how to fight against armour, and what strikes will do against it.

Well if there’s one thing I can say, I’m also more of a visual learner without knowing the technical terms. I’m self taught and have invested in a foam zweihander sword from calimacil. 1. Because I love that sword and want to study the techniques with it. 2. It’s surprisingly intimidating on the airsoft field I go to.

I really enjoy watching H.E.M.A training I do Fencing all three types ( foil, épée, and sabre ) for about Five years and I've been self teaching some H.E.M.A and Kendo for about two year on and off and I love see other people teach it and learn it
If you do fencing, you may want to look up Smallsword if you haven't already, as fencing was the evolution of that into a sport. You'll have some of the foundations already and its arguably the easiest form of HEMA to get into for someone less experienced. :)

I don't know where it comes from, but I remember a simple piece of swordfighting philosophy that I think is relevant here. It went something like this:
You must think always of cutting your enemy, when you strike you aim to cut, when you block you aim to cut, when you are cut you aim to cut in return.
If the swordsman thinks only of strikes, parries, and position, then that is all they shall accomplish. Every movement and thought must be towards victory.

looks great! what I see mostly is that everyone is flat footed. just like any other combat form being flat footed you can't evade or take advantage nearly as easily as if you're on the balls of your feet

My take on the names of "moves",
they are good when you want to talk with someone else, like saying [name] guard, instead of that: guard when you hold your sword in front of you in fully extended arm.
I highly enjoyed this not only was it some what educational for sword fighting but it was also highly entertaining

I LOVED this! I am on a similar level, and since I am not able to practise with anyone it helps a lot to at least see what practice would look like and what is good (not) to do at such a level.
This would be interesting, because I think some would use the half-sword technique and holding the sword.
So my HEMA club is in Minneapolis right near George Floyd autonomous zone. I haven't been in over a year . The only thing I would encourage is working more on the distance game. All the beginners are rather static and linear. Move more side to side (like you are doing Shad) and make sure to begin out side of range. We also found that the hands are the target maybe 70% of the time. With the hands extended, they are the closest to the opponents blade and, when fighting against someone, cutting off a finger or hand tends to end the others fight quickly. I've found that sword fighting is mostly about the footwork and maintaining distance and exploiting range when the opportunity presents itself.

This somehow reminds me of practicing when I was under 10 and I love it... not sure if it's the funny and cringe-worthy moments or watching your two entry-level squires improve over the course of the video and the more experienced squire that gave you a more even run for your money. I definitely wouldn't mind more of this kind of content so that I can watche everyone get better over time.
