For Frodo, it is like watching your worst nightmares come true before your eyes. I think Gandalf does a very good job of giving Frodo the terrifying facts in a way he is able to handle them.
I loved the deep-dive into Gollum and the ring. In the real world, we don't have the extra layer of complexity of an inanimate object which can control us, but I guess that can be translated into the real world with Satan and his cohorts. But as Christians, we believe we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to help us resist. What did Gollum have but his own will, since the Valar chose not to intervene in the 3rd age, but instead sent the Istari? Very though provoking. Thank you again!
I hate and love my phone like Gollum hates and loves his ring. I love your comment but would ask if you think “smart” phones are an example of inanimate objects that control us? I think Tolkien saw most industrialized technology as a form of evil magic. The modern idea is that the tech is not evil, the user is. I believe Tolkien would disagree suggesting that tech corrupts at the service of evil. As we all know, Tolkien avoided allegory wherever he could smell it but had he lived long enough to see cell phones, I wonder if he’d connect it to ring (tech) craft. Have you heard of the data mining tech company shamefully and appropriately named “Palantir”? The company slogan is “we believe in augmenting human intelligence, not replacing it” yea, right…. I think we’ll eventually need a butlerian jihad.
Thank you - I hope we become more active too, but alas, life always seems to intervene in our efforts towards social media consistency. But we'll keep trying...
