  • An overview of the Japanese Kiss pressings in my collection.
Note: I made a point of saying that Japanese pressings are surprisingly affordable. I probably should clarify that. Most of these pressings are fairly affordable. However, things like Originals II are more high-priced. Your mileage may vary, of course.

The Japanese always do everything very nice. My only Japanese items are the Led Zeppelin CD box set, which sound wise and everything else is excellent, Joan Jett Greatest Hits CD and yes it has the extra booklet in Japanese, and Creatures Of The Night (Analog) which i bought just before Kiss decided to re-issue their analog catalog and it cost me a pretty penny specially with the shipping. The center label is different from that of the US version. It's a very nice copy of Creatures sound and art wise. Awesome review again. Thanks

Awesome collection, and they're in superb condition! Also, thanks for the tip regarding "pure" vinyl and better audio, never heard of this.

I can tell from Love Gun and Destroyer that they are later represses. Easy to spit because of the labels. Destroyer had the old "Bogart" Cassablanca label (last one to have it and only the first press with poster has it, second pressings have the same label as Love Gun) and Love Gun had an earlier version of the late 70's/80's version of the label as seen on Dynasty.
The first pressings had the posters, paper gun etc and they were advertised on the OBI. Destroyer has the Japanese text in that small illustration at the top of the OBI. Love Gun also had text on the OBI. The complete first pressings are pretty pricey. The earlier pressings of KISS, Hotter Than Hell and Dressed To Kill are harder to come by and have the old "Bogart" label. I am not sure if pressing number makes a big difference to Jp pressings or not to be honest. I always try and get a first varient, but don't know if sound quality changed. I only have Dynasty and UNMASKED at the moment, sadly my "EX-" advertised UNMASKED is far from it, has tons of scratches, noise and spindle trails. I need to get more KISS. Those two were the only titles I ever owned. Got UNMASKED for my 4th birthday and Dynasty the folliwing Christmas. Too bad my enture collection was stollen in March.... :'( I have my Jp records and that's it.

I noticed the later reissued Double Platinum albums from Japan used jackets made in the U.S. Also the labels were just the standard Casablanca ones and didn't have the "Honors" "KISS Double Platinum" in bold red letters any longer. I believe this is when Polystar took over distribution from Victor Japan

Japanese also never had the pictured labels from Dynasty and Unmasked in the first issues of the albums.

Interesting that this Japanese version of The Elder does not include "Escape From The Island", which went on the Japanese version of "Killers" one year after.

I can confirm that no...those sleeves are not what the US edition originally came in. A friend of mine had the set...one album had a chunk broken out of it.

What sounds better Japanese or the regular US pressings from the 70’s ??

  • @bobby666666

The sleeves holding the records are called Rice Paper Sleeves. The vinyl may be new and quiet, but one Record Store Owner/Vinyl/Audiophile Guy in America and posts on YT dies not like Japanese Pressings as he states they are mastered with too much top end. This may apply to originals or re-pressings.

I've bought all but one of mine from sellers in Japan that are selling on eBay. Shipping has been very reasonable, too. Around $15 US.
