Announcing the 5 year mark.
A bit late
Closer to 6 years actually.
@@ETERNlTUS lol, I was just going to type that. I think Daniel might still be living in 2020
@@ETERNlTUS more like 25 years
we need elon musk in the comment.
Ok, it's been 5 years now. I'm waiting.
Formaldehyde is quite present in the home then. Lemonine/perfume which is in a tonne of products such as air fresheners, cleaning products, shampoo, perfume and cented candles. It reacts with oxygen to make formaldehyde in the air. A study found that over winter periods in the UK the formaldehyde levels in a typical home were at a dangerous level because all windows are shut
😳I’m glad that during the daylight hours here were I live it’s warm enough during the day to open up the house to let it breath after using heaters during the night it’s only on the coldest nights that I close the windows and turn on the heat 🤔😹
5 years later, I still want to say, can't wait for this to come fruitation.
2 more years and I am wondering what is the delay? Why aren't these panels for sale at Home Depot?
All this time when I grow my mushrooms (just a hobby) my mind say "this looks like a plywood" and they actually make use of it
Over 20 years they have made packaging materials this way.
I would love to see this process done with Hemp. Hemp is one of the strongest fibers we know of, it does not rot, insects don't like it and a couple of acres of hemp can produce the equivalent of 10 acres of old-growth forest and do it every year.
Plus we are more familiar with technological process and have more machines to perform it since it's already used for making paper.
I'd rather it be done with hemp. Mycelium contain mycotoxins that can be really harmful to people. This seems like it has the potential to be the new asbestos/lead paint.. in 30 years you can get all kinds of cancer after exposure. The fungus might be dead after pressing, but only certain chemical reactions can denature the mycotoxins. Making home building materials out of inoculated corn crop waste and other agricultural waste seems like the worst idea ever to me when considering how easily a home can be affected by mold via water damage even with building materials that are supposed to be mold and water-resistant.
Kentucky way ahead of you
You're going to have to read up some more, as you are completely off base. But you got your attention.
@@orchidtrust2543 not all Mycelium produces mycotoxins though. That's very species dependant.
"Where new breeds of renewable construction products aren't made *they're grown*"
Can someone verify that the narrator is aware that wood literally grows on trees...?
That's not what it means. The wood is taken from trees and then undergoes plenty of manufacturing processes.
@@francisluglio6611 Sure, beacause this fungus thing doesn't
I know this stuff. Mycelium, or roots of the fungus, gives you access to the mycelial network, a discrete subspace domain. This is especially useful if you have faulty dilithium crystals or a shortage of deuterium.
Nonsense!
Haha too much star Trek discovery 😂😂😂
Dont ferget lanthum..
Lol I was looking for this

@@supremeverdict359 what about on floor?
I think the problem they are fixing is exaggerated, but I also think impregnating the mycelium board with resin would make practically bulletproof structural material. Imagine wind turbine blades made with impregnated mycelium and corn stalk waste rather than fiberglass.
it would be worse than fibreglass. this is because of the way the fibres are structured in the two materials and the tensile strenght of each fibre. glass fibre has a higher tensile strenght mycelium. aslo if you can controll the fibrestructure in a glassfibre board thus making the glassfibre board stronger or get a spesific mechanical property, somthing that you cant do with mycelium based boards.
glassfibre is comparable to kevlar and carbonfibre and is a much more suitible material than mycelium.
What is the strength of the mycelium material compared to conventional particle board or plywood?
AND, what and how does it react when it gets wet in comparison to partial board? Really important.
@@focalplane3063 imagine if it just grew black mold really quickly.
Maybe a light dabbing of eco friendly laminating resin would prolong such objects.

This material is awesome! Thanks Bloomberg.
Fungal hyphae are made of chitin, which is readily available as mountains of crab and shrimp exoskeleton waste.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing
Insect casings are also made of chitin.
Wooo! Mesmerizing

Yeah it might grow next to the amazon
Without doubt Fungus is the most important living thing on the planet!
This is just awesome!
It definitely has a place. I don't see it replacing lumber which itself is renewable and abundant.
Right, I don't get the need or the hype as using wood is not a problem in of itself
I hope we'll find a way to reduce polymers instead
Mycelium house, sounds like a great place to put my paperless office.
Appreciate the cruel irony! Paperless office!? Such a fantasy even today! But I feel the Post Covid office could be paperless!

So gracious

Love it, can't wait to see what you develop in the future
The future here. They also make meatless meat, which made from fungus.
What is the service life of these fungal plywoods? My computer table is made of plywood and I bought it second hand 5 years ago! Its actual age might be more than 10 years. Do fungal plywoods have comparable service life?
3:30 min , Is it just being pressed or also heated?
Can you please share the specification of the hot press shown at 3:09 ? (Pressure and temperature)
Thanks in advance
Love it! :)
I love mushrooms!!
our future overlords will be sentient mushrooms.
yeah but how much carbon output did it take, and how much did it cost to get all that mycelium
I love to see it replacing the woods in building houses
mycelium is extremely resilient, as soon as that plank gets hydrated everyone will be living in mushroom homes.
it cannot go back, it's dead.
Not when it’s cooked bruh
They kill the mycelium to make it
Is some fungel infection come due to this....
If rainy season....or winter ❄️ is there
How does this product react to water if it gets wet or soaked?
It's been five years now. Is there an update on these?
What do they give to feed the fungi?
We shoyld invest, support & buy more of these
I absolutely love mushroom products, but I have to say heavy reliance on single use plastic is a big environmental flaw, in the process. Which needs sorting out to be fully Sustainable, perhaps compostable plastic alternative, or use containers that would last many years.
are they up on stock market????
wondering if some of the wasteful plastic can be put to a use like this

Why not using lignin or tannin instead of formaldehyde?

Interesting concept 🤔 what is the carbon footprint to actually produce a 1' X 1' slab?
How much electricity and water is used to produce this product?
stuff like this makes me really hope that fungus and plant like organisms can't feel, or register, pain
It would be nice to have technologies with no potential down sides (other than cost to make them obviously)
What happens when it gets wet or humid
That is so cool. I just wanted to ask... If you grow mushrooms to eat them, they will also produce mycelium. So is there a way to do both? /Do you do both? That would be even more sustainable than it already is.
You can eat mycelium as well. Meati foods are made of mycelium and they just went on sale at Sprouts stores.
It seems everyone suddenly gets a reminder from YT about a video from 6 years ago...
Past 5 years....I want my house made of shrooms!🍄
So how do you make a fungus based product mold and mildew resistant with out chemicals? That's what they don't tell you.
Yep... Also wear a life support Jacket all the time...
When you cut this ,would it not spread fungal dust?! i.e lethal dust?
It is mould spores that cause problems not mycelium
How can I invest in this?
Mushrooms release large amounts of gasses while growing.
I think using rock based building materials like crecrete boards is better.
But maybe you can address the issue with the gasses from the growth of mushrooms
How bad is the gas? Is it harmful for human or Earth?
And how do you exactly “up-cycle” your chair, even if it were made from mycelium?
I'm not sure I understand your question but you can just grind the material into bits, put it in a mold and let the fungus grow through it again
@@ScheveSneeuwSchuifSchep I appreciate your comment, Ludivico. I suppose that is my point exactly. Although I believe this concept is not only remarkable and in fact beautiful, I don't believe the modern consumer is going to deviate from the traditional model of "buy, use, donate, and repeat," schema anytime soon.
@@ScheveSneeuwSchuifSchep i believe the mycelium will have little grow if u reuse it thus the binding not as strong as the 1st one
Which species of mushroom do you use?
Tom Oberlin I’m guessing reishi since the mycelium is super fast growing
Updates?
Fungus are more related to humans than plants
Dude everyone in your factory is going to get mushroom lung
If I remember correctly you get mushroom lung from breathing the spores. To breathe in spores you need a fruiting body, which isn't the case here.

So how does it stand up to fire
It's been 5 years
My chair and table are both solid birch wood
not sure about the idea of using this in construction, seems like it would do wonders as packing material for shipping etc. the main issue i see with this in the home is keeping moisture away you can protect it in every way possible but moisture is going to eventually get in and this most likely is not very water resistant. theres likely something better for the construction industry as i think the materials needed to protect this composite material would negate any of the benefits it could bring.
You are saying an organism that grows in a moist environment is nit moisture resistant? You DO know that microbiology is a life science, studied around the world, right?
i use the plastic bins to make the natural plastic...

If I remember correctly around the time this video was made they were using oyster mushrooms. I think their patents might also state what species they use.
Reishi is the hardest and fastest colonizing

In houses, on the contrary, they try to get rid of the fungus, and they make walls out of it.
