As somebody who is likely to begin a career in this field, I found this video very helpful. I think you explained things very clearly and I understand the differences very well now. Thanks for making it!
Can you recommend formal education programs for surface pattern design (you mention programs in the UK and NY). I have done some informal online courses but would be very interested in a more formal education track in surface pattern design - preferably a distance education or blended distance and classroom model). Any advice you have for education programs that are well respected in the industry would be appreciated.
@@heatherbastin4507 Excellent question, and honestly, in the U.S. it used to be Syracuse's program was well known because it was one of the only ones, but they eliminated it as a major a while back. All I know of are the ones that I show in the screenshot on the video- Fashion Institute of Technology in the U.S. and then some of the European ones I found were Staffordshire and Plymouth College of Art. I'm not too caught up on the formal education scene!
Excellent video, Elizabeth. As a lifetime learner, recently retired (early) educator, and a self-taught mixed media artist, I'd like to say, "Helpful info in a clear format. Ticks all my boxes for a starting point. Thanks a bunch!" I keep tinkering with this "add" to my creative biz. Subscribed to your YT this morning and already following you on IG. Lots more learning to do. :)

Thanks so much! I'm glad it was helpful even if the lines can be a little blurry at times, since people refer to things differently!

I really appreciate the feedback...for something that has kind of a nebulous definition and lots of interpretation, I'm glad I was able to be clear :)

Do I need formal education to begin a career in this field?
Great question! No you don't, many successful designers are self taught or learned from online courses.
@@ElizabethSilver Thank you. Will you be able to recommend some online courses?
