I deeply relate to a lot of what was said, so much so that I spent half an hour quoting you so I can talk to my friend about how I feel the same way. The way you describe their music is very familiar and I have gone through the same issues with not wanting to be here and these 2 are to this day so important to me, as I surely wouldn't have made it without them. They're my 2 favourite artists and both the works that you primarily talk about in this video are very dear to me. I also treat their work like scripture, as I do with many other artists, though they are the only ones I do it so thoroughly with. I also find it hard not to draw parallels between their completely separate experiences. I also treat them like martyrs in my head and quote their verses "like bible verses". Their art has helped me stay here, I'm very grateful for it and seeing another person have a similar experience is both weird and, in a way, comforting. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I'm grateful for it. Thank you for the essay.

Yo, shout-out to you from the motherland. I wish I ran into your stuff way earlier; it's very relatable. I've got an old podcast (from the 2020 cocoon days) that shares similar themes and vibes with your content.
You're basically a chubbier version of me from an alternate universe that's somehow coexisting with me in this one.
Mac really opened my mind's eye to the power of music (Cheesy comment, sure. Truth is dairy, we don't always got the stomach for it). As an addict myself, I can relate to a lot of his messages and he's definitely encouraged me to break out of that funk. Tough luck being based in this relative shit hole of a country, but I still hold on to those messages. Mac is one of the numerous artists who inspired me to pick up a mic and express myself with no(well, with MINIMAL) filter. I've got a few verses and tracks on my YT channel and some more in the vault.
I could write a book on how much Mac Miller has affected me, but that wouldn't be fair to anyone's attention span, so I'll just end by saying: Thank you for your entertaining, relatable videos and I look forward to learning more from you. Odabo(I don't actually speak Yoruba, but I probably don't have a choice a la Lagosian)
Oh, and I'm a huge Earl Sweatshirt fan. His music intrigues me. The messages often elude me because of how...dense he typically is, but when I do manage to crack the code, it's a very rewarding experience.

@@tosin_is_hungry Yo, just finished the whole video. Made that comment right at the start and realized that small compliment doesn't do it justice. Loved your writing man. Your sharp and witty jabs you make and the fact that you take your favorite things in media and connect to them so much, deeply resonates 100% w me and reminds me of myself in my vids LMFAO. Your way of stringing shit together and finding so many examples and things to connect your points to and explain them in such great detail is sick.
I'm a filmmaker/ writer so seeing (well one, seeing a writer REPRESENT YAH) someone just as passionate making it on here... talking about their life stories/ what they love and how they connect to these pieces of art just makes me happy and stoked for you man. If you're down, I'd love to hit you up and see if we could chop it up sometime and get to know about more of our music tastes n shit and if you'd ever be down to collab on this music project/ video essay/ youtube documentary thingamabob i got coming up in the future bro, or to just talk stories about music! (I'm also the biggest Mac fan in the world bruh don't play w me I got 3 tats dedicated to him and plan to get more, and listen to everything, I mean everything from him like religiously).
You speak from the heart, and twist these words into shit that just made me go "wow, that's true as fuck" bro. And that's all I aim to do too, and share what I got, as a writer, as a youtuber, as a filmmaker, whatever yk?.
But yeah man awesome video, lmk if you're down to chat or even watch one of my vids to get a feel for my writing style and whatever you'd gather from anything, now im fs as the music hip hop fanatic i am gonna tune in to ya next one bro 🤠🙏🏽.

great video, just sad you couldn't find any tracks off Watching Movies worthy to write about.
some real gems in there. Still a great video, thank you for sharing.

Honestly I'll give it a relisten one of these days. I think because I heard The Star Room OG version first, and so when I went to listen to Watching Movies and it had a different (and in my opinion, not as good) Star Room it might have soured me on the rest of the album. I'd still give it like a 6 or 7, though.

why do you specifically talk about the og version of the star room? i only listened to the og version for a long time and loved it but i think the official version has so much more to it both musically and conceptually.
the official version has probably one of earl’s most dynamic and moving beats along with just being a more developed version of the og one (same chords and all) while the high pitched ‘delusional thomas’ vocals give a glimpse into his consciousness, which i guess is what he’s trying to portray.
conceptually the intro and outro have some really impactful lines to me about grief and mortality (and substance abuse), tying the song together (e.g. “hallelujah, thank god I have a future / praying i don't waste it getting faded” and “if there's a party in heaven i plan to leave wasted / retracing my steps way back to biblical times / we all gon end up meeting at the finishing line”). idk why im trying to convince u haha just more so wondering why specifically the og was mentioned (are the earl vocals in the middle the reason 😂😂)

I think the official version is solid enough. I enjoy it, but I appreciate the more gentle approach of the OG version. The sample is ingenious, and it's balancing act of playful, yet melancholic make it genuinely one of the best beats I've ever heard. For me the official version is just kind of generic, by the numbers, early 2000s, alternative hip-hop affair. Still enjoy it, though.

@ very fair, i think the sampling is great and although the intro is kinda uncomfortable, that’s almost quite reflective of the song’s themes? the whole balanced playful/melancholic idea is quite interesting to me, it’s a balance that goes on all throughout faces and this album which i agree is portrayed very well in the og beat. the woozy synths of the official version probably resonate the melancholic side of that a lot more to me which makes the official version a bit more depressing and beautiful to me, along with the intro and outro of course.
curious what else you love about the beat so much - in a similar style, i’d say i prefer the raw emotion from something like mavi’s self love or earl’s ontheway. thanks for the response btw, the video was amazing - loved the research aspect of it paired with the personal and philosophical touches. much love :)

@@blackzunderbolt5222 Thank you so much! I also love the MAVI and Earl songs. I guess for me, as much as I like the offical version for it's melancholy, the OG has a tiredness that feels more true to it's lyrics.
