What a SUPERB breakdown of this beastly opening!! Especially love the interplay between brass and strings, heard isolated. BUMPS OF GOOSENESS!!!! And breakdown of the percussion layers... among a billion other things... Thanks for this "under the hood" adventure!!!
I had my nanoKontrol laying around for years. Even before knowing where I was going to use it for now. Seeing all these professionals using it is a weird concept to comprehend for some reason.
I love Jeff because he is a guy that can be anyone else, just a regular guy that love music and do awesome stuff. Seeing him working in his studio, talking so humbly it really inspired me. Thanks Spitfire
Great insight, thanks Jeff and Spitfire. Really important to hear honest interviews with real reflections on the process. Jeff seems like a nice, genuine person....which is the only way to be.
Recently discovered Spitfire Audio.. and as a Trekkie fan was Excited to to watch this. An energetic passionate person who was so open to his creativity.Thank you. I also noticed the LONDON acoustic tile son the wall! Same as mine! Thank you all for this.
We need to see him talking about Umbrella academy. His work on that show is very simple and almost entirely based around 3-4 main motifs. But it work so well.
Great vid!! Love that Jeff mentions how long (timewise) it takes to compose/produce an average cue. I would love to see/hear how Jeff uses some of his outboard gear.
Very cool to see inside Jeff's process and session. I like that it's all focused on one cue. And into the details of his sound design & orchestra recording, & director/producer dynamics. All super cool to hear. I'm inspired.
I enjoyed learning a bit about tv composition turnaround works, sound design, and how the cues are written. Thank you for doing this, Spitfire Audio and Jeff Russo!
If you use nVidia video card, you can stretch the TV monitor to fit properly in the nVidia settings! (not sure if you actually need to know that), but it was something I noticed in the beginning. What a great video!
Patrick Rose looks like an iPad Pro 12.9” on the left. The perspective of the camera makes it hard to judge if the tablet on the right (below his name card) is the same size. The white unit below the iPad Pro 12.9” that he uses for Expression is a KORG nanoKontrol 2, and a standard Apple wireless keyboard to the right of that.
I see that he's using Pro Tools. Has MIDI in Pro Tools become better over the years? Back in the day, people thought Cubase and Logic had many more MIDI features. And is it easy now to do everything in say Logic first and then convert the MIDI into audio tracks in Pro Tools in case the production company wants it delivered as a Pro Tools session?
Okay, Mr. Russo, Erich Korngold established the baseline for cinematic brass writing in the 30's. Not Goldsmith OR John Williams. In fact, the original Star Wars main theme is a nearly direct lift from Korngold's "King's Row".
ZZZzzzzz.....this is so uninventive. But I believe him - it sounds exactly like he puts it together super quickly. Sample based mush. Also, in mono for some reason.

The main thing for me...someone else uses the Korg nano kontrol for their CC. I feel validated
Airskii - Official i use ipad with touch osc and logic pad for all logic and my Arturia for bbc core
I was wondering what that was!
I had my nanoKontrol laying around for years. Even before knowing where I was going to use it for now. Seeing all these professionals using it is a weird concept to comprehend for some reason.
One of my favorite composers. Very cool to see his setup and hear him talk though his process. Thanks Spitfire!
RAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only halfway through and I'm already inspired - thanks for sharing!

I love how he was so honest and true. That was a fantastic breakdown and super motivational! Thanks again Spitfire.

Great interview. Thanks for doing it!
Jeff Russo : Let's make the best music for the opening scene with klingons.
Everybody: That's not how klingons look like.

I LOVE Disco's score, and love the thought he put behind it.

@@CinematicHypeTV Sorry about tone-deafness I guess?

Dang, Jeff, you are one cool cat. Great work!
He sure has a lot of screens going on in there! 4 monitors, plus touch screens and VU meters in front of him. Great composer.
Seems excessive hahaha
Thank you for sharing this!!
Amazing tutorial from Ted Mosby

Awesome interview! Are those widescreen iPads above his keyboard??? What tablets are those?

Does anyone know what the controller to the left of his computer keyboard is?
I'm curious, too.
I did some poking around to find out for myself. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's the Korg nanoKontrol2 Slim Line USB MIDI Controller.
MagMusic That’s the ticket. Thank you, sir.

What’s he using on the iPads?

What is the name of the spore drive theme?
What is the app on the iPad which is underneath the 'Jeff Russo' card?
Looks like Protools Control app
I like your music for Netflix Cursed love to see breakdown of that
Holly cow. Five days per episode. That sounds really stressful. That's harsh.
Maybe the best advice is the final one.
순간 다니엘 린데만인줄 알고 깜짝 놀랐다.. 제프 루소였구나.
The tundra reminds me of what drakes fortune video games have in them
The only thing good about STD ... the music is really well done.
