This song should have won every award in sight. Accidentally in Love is just about the most adorable song ever recorded. The perfect song for Shrek 2. His voice is so energetic and of the wall in the cutest, goofiest way. The remake of Yellow Taxi is super as well. A wonderful group.
This is great, a great performance and not a cell phone in sight! I miss those days. Everyone was fully present. The world is a worse place since social media invaded about 4 years after this.

Matt (Bass player) was in our band for about a month in SF in 1990. I was falling asleep a couple of years later in front of the TV and Mr jones started playing on I think was David Letterman and I had no idea that Counting crows was these guys. We opened many times for a band that Adam was singing in called sordid humor. Adam always stood in the middle of the floor and listened to every single note we played. I always knew he’d go places. I was told that I was hanging out with him but I don’t remember because I was probably drunk.
We had our wedding ceremony and reception in the same venue. I wanted to play something upbeat to get everyone out on the front steps for a group picture while we flipped the room to reception mode. I chose Accidentally in Love. It was perfect--the lyrics are so wedding appropriate, it made everyone smile and laugh as they filed out, it elevated the mood from "somber wedding vows" to "let's party." That was October 2007 and I still love this song.
I remember watching this live as it happened because my Mom always used to watch the Today show back then and I was at her house the morning this was on.
Back in 97' I had a friend Jeremy, he was a singer in Oklahoma. We used perform OKC Bricktown @ Chelinos Restaurant, I ALWAYS CONVINCED HIM TO SING Mr Jones, At first I paid him, Later he include this song to his repertory.... Jeremy it was a GREAT DUDE...
As a further comment, so many complain that modern music lacks originality. Here is the rebuttal! When has there been a song with a more unique sound and flavor than Accidentally in Love? In a world of cookie cutter sounds and xerox copies, this group breaks the mold. Number one for sheer joy and unabashed goofiness.
Him, Jim Morrison, Van Morrison... Are there better American songwriters that I'm forgetting? If you're going to name three or four songs don't even bother. This dude snapped off like 10 on the debut album that are forever classics of songwriting.
Bob Dylan, Eddie Vedder, Jeff Tweedy, Kurt Kobain, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon, Prince, Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Gershwin to name a few but i do really like Counting crows.
Man I love Counting Crows but sometimes in a live scenario Adam massacres the song by doing it so far off from what the studio version is that in makes it impossible to sing along and comes across as a totally different song. I dont know why but sometimes I just want to hear them do the song the way the studio recording sounds. There are some songs that that works extremely well on live. Some of the more emotional songs like "Goodnight Elizabeth" and "Round Here" but does every song need to sound like an entirely different song live? I don't know just my opinion.
I see both sides of it. On one hand, the melodies in the studio versions are beautiful and probably as close to perfect as you can get. On the other hand, Adam gives you a unique and unprecedented performance each time he does it live, which has so much value in and of itself.
Sure, on one hand, but on the other, he became a big big star. I don't think Marty did (Mr. Jones). I guess he has had a solid career, but nothing like what happened with Counting Crows. But really, it's not _that_ sad, because ultimately it's about two guys who were watching some other guy get all the girls, and they just kind of felt like if they were stars they'd have all the girls too (and everyone loving them). But then again, there is that emptiness they wanted to fill, thinking stardom would fill it. In later live versions of the song, you can really hear that aspect of it.
Terrible live band in my opinion. I hate it when musicians deviate from the source material too much. Unless they are PHYSICALLY putting on a show too intense to play properly then it ain't for me.
