A New Storage Space Revealed
Complete Upstairs Remodel / Renovation (Part 1)
Building A New Loft Storage Space In The Attic For This Rundown Fixer Upper
In this episode, Deric (the Architect turned Handyman) digs out the dirt, insulates the rafters, hangs up the cedar sheets and finishes our the details in one of the roughest and most disgusting attics spaces around. Dead squirrels aren't the only things he uncovers in this first installment of the $8,000 House's (purchase price) upstairs remodel and renovation that is now underway.

Rundown Reborn - Episode 28
In a more serious note though, extremely helpful! I'm currently renovating my attic and stumbled upon this, looks great!
Thanks
I’ve been thinking about doing this to turn my huge attic into a studio. My attic is probably every bit of 1200sqft with 12ft ceilings but after watching this video I changed my mind. I have blown in insulation that the previous owners put in and I’m not messing with it at all.
I say go for it. The tear out is about 2-3 days of misery. And after that - the fun stuff begins. Take it slow and steady. I guarantee it will be worth it in the end.
Maybe have a company vacuum it up for you? Might be worth the cost.
Yup! Working in an attic without ventilation or insulation in the ceiling is really hot..unless you work early in the mornings....that is what I did! You are quite a determined chap! Inspiring and I hope everything worked out for you. 👍🇨🇦💯
Thank you!!!
OH, OH! You need an Air space of 2 inches under the roof sheathing so that the intake soffit air will flow up to the ridge vent....otherwise pushing insulation against the roof sheathing will prevent air flow and the temperature differential will cause condensation and moisture on the insulation....Lots of youtube vids that explain the science of the air space and roof venting when making a living space in the attic.
House is over 100 years old. Roof rafters are 2x4 and there are no vents. Can add future vents when a new roof it installed. Only about 30% of the roof has the insulation against the roof deck tho. Had to do the best with what I was given.
I'm pretty sure there is no ridge vent. As far as condensation, yes it's possible. But if they keep the moisture low then it can help mitigate.
@@RundownReborn Maybe just try to limit the humidity (vapor going up towards ceiling). Running a dehumidfier is prob a good idea.
@@RundownReborn One tip to add to your comment is when adding a new roof, leave the original roof sheathing on, if it is still good, and lay 2x 4's or 2x2's board over the sheathing and directly in line with the roof rafters that are under the sheathing, and then add another layer of sheathing and make that your new roof! The air space between the top of the bottom sheathings and the underside of the 2nd layer of sheathing is your air space! Voila! Then the interior upstairs can be a conditioned space, not connected to the outside. The soffits are made from the extension of the new 2/2 or 2/4's. It's been 2yrs now so I am sure you have figured out a lot on how to make a well vented roof. The build show network in the USA, Matt Resinger, has tons of vids on roofing with Steve B as architectural design friend that also makes great vids on air flow. Also another man on the show that also builds in zone 3 so condensation weather has similar tips about a properly vented roof. Hope everything worked out well for you. Lots of work and passion can take anyone to places never thought possible. :) Chiming in, Canada, Prince Edward Island.
What a good father great job
Thank you so much and for watching
Why didn’t you rent an insulation vacuum cleaner to get rid of the old insulation ? Great job !!
Hands and a scoop are free
This was absolutely amazing! How dirty and disgusting it was at first, then you turned it into what we saw at the end?? All on your own?! AMAZING! Kudos to you man! I hope that your channel goes far! I hope you and your family do very well and RUclips starts suggesting your videos because the work you’re doing on this home by yourself is incredible! People are so weird for getting on here and criticizing every small detail, as if they can even remotely come close to doing a job like this! 🙄😑 anyway, great job! I’ve saved this video and am going to watch some of your others!
Thank you J D. You have provided my day’s inspiration. I really appreciate having viewers like you out there watching. It is fabulous to have you join the channel.
Good job. I am excited for see the final result.
Me too!
You're a lucky man to have such a supportive and pretty wife!
Thank you
Should probably have installed foam baffles under the insulation. Preserve some ventilation, because you'll gedlt some condensation on the inside of the roofing
Ideally yes. But depth space is very limited there for my situation
This is an amazing project on a budget. The two suggestions I have along with what others have said are (1) mask up working with insulation; and (2) I see you brining a lot where I feel you should be using a vacuum instead to put less of that nasty dust in the air. After going to the trouble to remove all the old insulation, mummified squirrels and potential rodent turds and urine, I would have vacuumed before putting down new insulation.
Masks don’t do much… they become more of an issue on their own… especially when hot. Good ventilation and fans help more
This is so cool. Our cottage is very old as well. We don't have soffits or a ridge vent, and our attic could use an upgrade like this. Did you simply insulate the rafters directly against the ceiling? The info out there about closed attic spaces is so confusing...
Yes that is what he did, I wonder if condensation is an issue
I did. Airspace against the roof deck is preferred but my rafters are 2x4 so space was limited. Decided to insulate as much as possible
@@RundownReborn It is interesting that the rafters are only 2x4. Is that common? Is that code today? I thought they had to be bigger.
They hold up well and felt strong?
I was considering doing mine just for the heck of it. Now I am giving it up after seeing this video. It's too much work and climbing up and down. As my wife says, it's empty now and it will be empty after, no matter how well decorated it is. What's the point?
Best of luck to you
Was there a load bearing floor made already or did you (and others before you) put a floor down on the roof joists? That's going to be saggy af. Also the roof doesn't ventilate, you'll get mold all over because you didn't leave a gap between the insulation and the roof.
No floor on the roof joists!
I kept expecting you to do something funny or play an impractical joke on one of your friends. That part was disappointing, but this remodel was not disappointing. Great work.
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching. We try not to take ourselves too seriously sometimes.
Check out this video. We get a little silly in this one - ruclips.net/video/XLlY1ej_ES4/видео.html
This one is kind of exciting/unique as well - ruclips.net/video/tZGrJjbm51M/видео.html
@@RundownReborn I'm kidding. You look just like Joe from the TV show "Impractical Jokers". But still a good video nonetheless!
Wasn't familiar with the show - but I see the resemblance. HA!
I enjoyed watching the vid. What did you do as far as ventilation for the roof/ rafters? Doesn’t it need to breathe? Roof rot can happen.
The roof could use some ridge venting. There is probably only about 5 years left for it. I am on the fence if I will be doing the venting. I don't plan to do the roof. There is a lot of attic up there still above the ceiling. I figure that it will breathe well enough until a new roof is installed. This at least was my thinking.
My husband and I just bought a house off of tax sales (we’re 21 and have been married for a little over 2 years. We’re about to leave the military life style). I am so nervous to start renovations. These videos give me hope
Congratulations and welcome! Don’t fret. Just take your time, plan well, don’t be afraid to try something new, do your best and have fun!!!!
Dirty job. Came out great!
Thank you
Only thing what would drive me nuts is those small thin panels you put on the window framing, they have different sizes on each side....I have OCD,im sorry 😆
But I really like your videos, thanks so much for sharing!😊
I hear you but I wanted to use up my scraps rather than buy wood. Since it was a storage space I felt that cosmetics were not a big issue.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
Is that adequate if you later want to heat or cool the space? I saw that you can make channels or air gaps before installing insulation so that any existing vents in the eves can still vent out the ridge
It’s an old house… no eave vents. The rafters are only 2x4 so I filled them with insulation
Is there any chance of moisture trouble in the future. I have a similar structure and been wanting to convert the space. But currently there’s no insulation whatsoever. But I’m scared of possibly getting mold.
good job
Thanks!!! 👍💪
Great content. Curious did you have to sister any of the joists below? What size were the joists? It seems some serious thought and effort went into the room is there a reason you didn't wire any outlets?
Hi! I did not sister the joists but I probably should have… but I didn’t want the expense. It’s a light storage room only and although it’s insulated, it’s not conditioned space. There is one outlet near the entrance… but it’s just a storage room. Not much need for it. It can’t be a bedroom because the window doesn’t open and it’s not big enough to be used for egress during a fire.
I can find a part 2? Did you put Sheetrock over the plywood?
Not in this room. It is just a storage loft.
Nice job! When does the sheet rock co-op?
Co-op???
Why would you use OSB for the walls/ceiling instead of proper drywall?
Hi Daniel. Either is fine. In my case, this space is for basic storage. Aesthetics were not a concern. I figured osb would be more durable than drywall and resist any damage from moving things around in there.
I do wonder, in the place i live at, they simply put the roof tiles over the beams without any insulation. Is there any way to insulate under the tiles without removing them from the inside of the house? or you need to take it all off. Thank you.
You can always insulate from the underside. If you have an attic space, you can insulate there. It is best to insulate the floor of the attic space (above the ceiling below). This way the attic can serve as a large air chamber allowing the insulation to work better. If possible, vent the attic. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@RundownReborn thanks for the idea. Any suggestions for venting the attic?. Currently we have 2 small tiny windows on each side
@@kookia213 you could replace one of them with a large vent. Is the attic a usable space or a truss attic? If the daylight is desired, you can always add a couple of vents through the roof. Not sure what you attic looks like. Peek around online for different roof vent options and see what works best for yours.
No attic in my condo, but this looks pretty cool. Are you planning a reno?
Thank you. Yes, I am doing a full renovation on the house. The channel is documenting this!
How do you know if the insulation that has blown in is asbestos or not?
It needs to be tested. Asbestos is a natural fiber. It’s commonly found in nature. It’s only harmful with prolonged exposure. A little bit of exposure is tolerable. It’s not poison.
Really great content.
This helped tremendously.
The ONLY constructive criticism; ALWAYS WEAR A RESPIRATOR/N95 when working with Fiberglass Insulation 😊
Many thanks,

Thanks for the nice comments and point taken. Thanks for watching!!!
Yes I kept thinking about your lungs when removing the old insulation. Those flimsy masks are not great! Get a full on respirator! Love, your friendly cardiac RN
Also goggles for your eyes!!!
Hey, what did you do, about the air flow in the space?
Are you referring to the heat and air conditioning? I have two videos on that where I show the entire HVAC install. You might check those out.
HEATING AND COOLING - A New FORCED AIR FURNACE From Start To Finish
Why didn’t you guys finish the space? Love the content btw!
It’s still a work in progress. Goal is to have it done by end of the summer. Thanks for watching. Glad to hear that you like the channel.
Do you need a permit from the city to finish the attic
In all depends on where you live (the jurisdiction that you reside in). I live in a smaller city so there is no need for me to have a building permit if I am living in the house. Larger cities tend to have more oversight than smaller cities. It is best to check with your local municipal building department.
What was the reason why you went with fiberglass over other types of insulation
Basically cost and ease of installation. I installed as I went over the course of the entire project. Spray foam is better but it’s not DIY friendly.
@@RundownReborn thanks for the response I’m concerned abt spray foam if not installed properly it may emit fumes and so with cellulose blown insulation. The dust and pesticides might leak out
@@bhadz100 the batt insulation is very easy to install and it’s fairly reasonable in price. It’s been doing a great job for our home keeping the energy costs down and the noise out. Check out this video too…

Hi, great video! Why did you use some cedar in the upper wall area?
Thanks for the kudos. We used cedar for a few reasons. First, it smells good and will keep the attic from getting too stuffy and stale. 2nd, cedar is a natural bug deterrent - keeping moths, flies and other critters at bay. Lastly, it resists dampness and humidity so it should help keep the mustiness down. Thanks for watching and for the great question!
Now I learned something important about the Cedar wood. Thanks.
I wouldn't have removed the blow-in insulation. It looks just fine. Only would have removed dirt and stuff. But hey, you've done it. Great job.
You are probably right. Blown in insulation is just nasty stuff to deal with.
Yep! Being someone who blew insulation into my house I would have left it. Even after when I did some remodeling I did save as much as possible. That stuff isn't cheap and certainly wasn't easy to install either.
Seeing all the stuff you do in your videos and how hard it actually can be from time to time I think construction workers etc are very much underpaid.
Perhaps. Have you seen what plumbers and electricians charge these days? 😳
Why did you go with cedar?
Cedar resists moths and insects.
Shouldn’t he have installed air baffles on the roof before insulation ?
Ideally yes… but no space. Rafters are 2x4
4:30 bro 😂😢
💪😀🤣
So I know absolutely nothing about attics...how do you test if it is safe to hold your weight?
If the structure isn’t rotten, it’s probably strong enough to stand on. Just be careful.
all is great except windows , if it could be torn out n put it higher n be perfect
Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
Dumb question, but why are you insulating the floor and ceiling/roofline? Isn't the area below a conditioned space?
Not a dumb question, I think it's called blissful ignorance!
He doesn't appear to know what he is doing in his vids.
BUT its getting done! More then I can say on my side.
This attic storage loft space we are building in the video is NOT conditioned and is above the living room. The floor insulation provides a conditioning barrier from the attic. The ceiling insulation is to provide thermal barrier for the storage loft so it doesn’t get so cold or hot and provides extra insulation for the conditioned space below.
@@RundownReborn ah, got it. I had thought this was going to be one of the bedrooms.
It can’t be a bedroom by code. There is no operable window to escape through in the case of a fire.
@@RundownReborn I think you had done an amazing job. Our attic is similar to yours and if we were to do things ourselves, we'd do the same thing. Bravo!
Das stimmt wohl was mit der Elektrik im Haus nicht
👍
Window looks weird. Not a pro in see. But valiant effort
Yes, this window is an old original window. I didn’t replace it. Since it was located in the front storage attic I wasn’t too concerned with the aesthetics. My windows in the rest of the house are all new installs and look much better.
