I would love teaching a combo class too if I had all independent students at or above grade level. I had this only my very first year of teaching. After that, the new thing in my school board is to balance the classes and the needs. So I have a combo class (as do half the teachers in my school) but also needy students, students below grade level, diagnosed needs, and behaviour issues. It is so challenging! In another video she mentioned all the perks of teaching a split, like NO duty, picking your planning times, and having an assistant to help out! Any ONE of those would be amazing. We get nothing!! Also teaching a split is our reality about every other year bc they finally made a rule that if you have a split then the next year your get a straight. That wasn’t always the rule though and some teachers had to teach splits year after year!!
I have been waiting for this video! I stumbled across your 2024 classroom setup and have since watched a ton of your old videos. I’m not currently in the classroom and your videos make me realize how much I’m missing it. Thanks for the awesome teacher content!!
Woah I saw some long division on your back whiteboard… if that is what your third graders are doing that’s highly impressive! My 4th graders struggle SO much with this
I teach 3rd grade Science, SS, and Spelling and have 3 classes. We use Words Their Way for spelling. The students do a whole group test at the beginning and then it levels the students. In each class I have 4 groups, 3 groups, and 3 groups. Our school uses an online classroom called Schoology. I can record each groups spelling test on Schoology, they use headphones, can pause if they need to, and they all take a test together. It has been a GAME CHANGER!
Could you please show us how you explain the words for the Spelling Test in a video? I loved the fact that you dictate complete sentences and I would like to work with a strategy like that.
Hi! I love your teaching videos! Could you make more vlogs like this and add maybe how you teach each grade with for example classroom manangement? Thank you again!
Do you remember what the secret surprise to share was? The star student with the Amazon box that had all the commands! It seems you've settled in nicely to a combo class. Your little guy will settle in to his Tk class soon as well. It takes a while for the little guys to get used to school.
Here’s a little teacher tip. It might be easier to record your self saying the dictation sentences on something like loom or screencastify . Then you can post the videos on the student’s Google classroom. That way they only have to listen to their grade level’s sentences and they can pause and rewind to re listen if they need to.
I appreciate your vlogs so much!! Thank you! I’m teaching a 2/3 split this year for the first time. But I don’t get all the bonuses like you do. ie. Hand selected independent working students, etc. Curious about the ball game you do at the end of the day.
Out of curiosity, here in Nebraska our students attend "specials" during the school day, they attend Music, P.E. Art, Technology and Library- is this not common there (or anywhere) this gives teachers some extra time for prep.
Could you please do a video on your writing program(how you teach writing) .That is my biggest weakness. Also I could not find the link for the Fact Fluency you mentioned. What exactly is your new Spelling Test as a replacement for traditional spelling tests? Thank you. Alicia from CT
Thank you for your enthusiasm to teaching! I was looking for the link to the fact fluency tests you use but couldn't seem to find it in the description. Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks!
Shelley, 1st, You're looking pretty in your outfit. 2nd, I am glad that you are loving things this year. 3rd, I like the BINGO thing you have going on. What's that connected to? - Dwight
Glad you are enjoying your school year. You seem happy! However, you never told us what was in the box!!!🤣

I put a CUPS rubric on the board when we do dictation sentences for our tests....I remind them to look at the rubric to check their sentences.
So glad you hear you are liking the combo class! It sounds like such a challenge to manage, but if anyone can do it you can! :)💖
LOVE that spelling test! I REALLY need to know what that student brought, though. 😂😂

Your outfit is very cute! I love the spelling test set up. We have a new curriculum and it’s the worst. I love that you are loving this year!

Hello, thanks for sharing your 2nd/3rd grade Teacher video.
It takes about 4-5 months to feel settled in a new school year and I teach High School! glad to see you back. That spelling test looks amazing.
truth! ☝☝
Could you please show us how you explain the words for the Spelling Test in a video? I loved the fact that you dictate complete sentences and I would like to work with a strategy like that.
Great videos. I like the idea of spelling tests being dictation sentences. My 2nd graders really need to write more.
You never told us what was in the box.......🤣 I really wanted to know. 👀 I love your videos by the way!!
Me too! lol...
Would love to hear your pros and cons of having your son at the same school you work at 😊

Cute. Thanks for sharing!
I am also dying to know what the star student brought!
Love your videos!!! 😊
We Sam the Word 1 time, they replay as class and them they with it down. So much better for your voice and very good for listening, concentration.
Our school starts at 7:40 and goes to 3:05. Your day is so much more doable for kids.
Wow! our day ends around 2:45pm.
Our day is 7:45-4:00 🫠

Would love to see how you do your read alouds!
Thank you for sharing your day in your life as a combo teacher! I wish I could say the same for my situation! I’m a k/1 lol.
I do K and 1 too

Great Vlog!
Glad you are settling in and have the help from the mom. I am so curious-what was in that Amazon box that the star student brought?

The story goes my school is doing science of reading next year. What do you think of it? My coworkers and I are excited but what do you think?
Shelley,
1st, You're looking pretty in your outfit.
2nd, I am glad that you are loving things this year.
3rd, I like the BINGO thing you have going on. What's that connected to?

Lucky you that you have all your students on grade level and no sped kids 🤔
Exactly. That isn't the reality in most classrooms. It makes a huge difference.
I'm from Northern California. Beautiful
Wait. What was in the box?! 😮😂
Would you please send the link to the math fact practice you’re using? I teach second, and my kiddos are struggling to learn them. Thanks!
What was in the mystery sharing box?
Did you say you have stuff on tpt???
❤❤
What did the star student bring? That was a secret?
So, with the spelling test, do you have students write the sentences ?
13:03 Why do your students have a team points system?
