This deep-dive proves beyond doubt that Kelly was a cheating cheater who cheated on Chuck. I’d recommend anyone to watch Cast Away (2000) with this interpretation in mind because it goes from being "a goofy movie about talking to a volleyball" to becoming a genuinely heart-breaking film.
Please consider subscribing if you want to see more analysis of Cast Away (2000) as I'm currently working on at least two more videos discussing the possible meaning of Chuck's struggle on the island and his invention of Wilson.

Thank you for watching! Below is a list of some of the *genius* contributions from the comment section:
*1:* @jonXler pointed out that 8 minutes and 52 seconds into the film there is a sound while Chuck records a message on the answering phone. I think this is the *smoking gun* as it sounds like a 'duck' and my grandfather thinks it sounds like a 'dental drill' 😬
*2:* @_misnoma_ pointed out that the timepiece Kelly gives Chuck is a cheap gift for a broke PHD student at Christmas time (when there's no money from tutoring or lecturing). I want to be *really cynical* and suggest that it's not even a family heirloom; Kelly could have been mistaken but I think she lied because it's a known trivia/goof that it wasn't a railroad pocket watch like Kelly claimed ("My grandaddy used it on the southern pacific"), here's a quote from IMDB:
_"This is not a real railroad watch since the specific design was controlled by federal regulations, and would have never been allowed to be used on the job by a railroad crewman..."_
So I think she got the timepiece from a thrift store or maybe the University's lost and found. 😅
*3:* @notsureyou pointed out that the watch only having a photo of Kelly in it - instead of both of them - could be her just wanting him to have something to remember her by, as in "you WERE special to me," "what we HAD was special," etc. or it could also have been a guilty conscience present, i.e. "I do love him, this watch photo present proves it."
*4* @ironsoul80 pointed out that Kelly's first scene in the film has her standing next to a 'Caution Radioactive Material' sign - with obvious implications - and that there's a poster with a frog making eye contact with chuck, which could imply the 'Boiling Frog' metaphor.
*5:* @thatchap brought up the fact that Kelly attempted to *gaslight* Chuck with "You said you'd be right back" which is definitely a strange thing to say. I think it could be taken a few ways, none of them good, but to me it does seem like an attempt at gaslighting, deflecting responsibility, and/or alleviating her guilt.
*6:* @michaeljamesmccabe pointed out that during Chuck's monologue with his friend (Stan) he doesn't say anything and looks uncomfortable the whole time; I think that in itself, a monologue is a monologue for a reason, but also on the plane when Chuck asks _"What in the World am I going to say to her?"_ there is an uncomfortable 4-second-pause before Stan responds. I doubt Stan would have known anything for sure but I think he must have had the same suspicions.
    *7:* @SkidsIsVFL pointed out that:
"Memphis had already had 2 failed pro football franchises and were snubbed for expansion after the Oilers moved to Nashville (where they were renamed to the Titans). So hearing a Memphis native say “We (Tennessee) have a football team, but they’re in Nashville?” echoes the city’s feelings of betrayal and the question is aimed at a woman who cheated on him is chefs kiss beautiful-but kinda niche-subtext."
*8:* @JamesCarmichael "You could say that Lovett fed his ex" 💀
*9:* @devlinallistair-zx5by pointed out that there could be an element of 'Hypergamy' to Kelly's hooking up with Lovett, i.e. "She's getting her dissertation, so she needs to be with a doctor."
*10:* @timsimmons9995 had another interpretation for 'Kelly' which I think is superior to mine: "Kelly means "strife, war," which is interpreted as conflict, a battle, or a disagreement. We can interpret that as meaning Kelly was in conflict or disagreement with herself, or two men were unknowingly in conflict for her heart, etc."
*11:* A small mistake in the video: I refer to the guy at the Christmas table as 'Chuck's friend' when he's actually just Kelly's uncle, which I believe supports my point more as Kelly's family don't want to discuss her past relationships at all and a friend would have probably just told Chuck (bro code), whereas an uncle would probably not get involved.
*12:* Another small mistake, the woman I referred to as a 'stewardess' is actually a pilot, my bad.
*13:* A point which has occurred to me for anyone looking to defend Kelly is that it's not right for her to kiss Chuck and declare her undying love for him while the man she married and the daughter they're raising are sleeping in their home just out of frame. To put it bluntly, there's no way Kelly was going to be honest with Lovett after this:
_"So I kissed Chuck and really I love him but I have to stay in this sham marriage because of our daughter and mortgage and I'm probably going to resent you for the rest of our lives etc."_
We are on Chuck's side as he's the protagonist but what Kelly is doing to Lovett is actually really bad. "Kelly is not an honest woman."
*14:* Finally, I want to recommend this incredibly deep video by 'Logos Made Flesh' who sadly has since passed away: ruclips.net/video/ECnvX3oKIMA/видео.html
I hope that you enjoyed the video! Once again, *thank you so much for watching!*

Well, I'm no bot, but as a lover of this film I will suggest that this is your personal fever dream and not particularly important in my view, in terms of enjoying the movie. I gave you the like anyway, because not seeing the original vid I listened until I understood what you were saying, and you sound pretty competent.....then I read the synopsis where you suggest that outside of this unimportant to me detail of her fidelity, you refer to the movie as "a goofy movie about talking to a volleyball". This is where I'd have punched you in person, having a good deal of the red island blood in me as well. Will still be tuning into the next one though, so prepare for another longwinded critique.

@@ExtraCheeseProject very impressive response time. I saw later my comment was pretty much off-base because I posted it too quick on that volleyball note, but I don't like to delete. I barely register Hunt when rewatching this movie, to me the movie is about enduring and overcoming mentally. Her locket is just the infinity stone of the movie, which he no longer needed to survive. Like you said it could have been anyone, but from my view it also could have been any "thing". They double down on this with his obsession with the package, also foregoing the final meeting with the actual person because its the symbol on the box and future promise that motivates, not the people. Of course you have to read this from the perspective of someone done with relationships and who thinks the deserted island didn't look too bad.

Thanks for diving into this film. I always thought it was deeper than it first appeared. There are levels to it that most people miss. Of course, you're also correct that Kelly wasn't really that bad, like I don't think she intended for anybody to get hurt. How it worked out makes her seem worse than she was though, so definitely "weak" as you said, but also 'unlucky' 😬 Thank you for the feedback! 😄

So I just watched both of your videos, and I have to say this is the best theory on the meaning of Cast Away I have seen on RUclips. Anything that is written as open ended as this movie can have many valid interpretations. With that being said, I always disliked the ending of the movie, and really don't like watching it. I always thought what was the point of everything, he gets nothing in the end beside the chance to live/start over. Everything else is gone(no job, no girlfriend, no place to live, all his stuff presumably is gone) besides his Jeep I guess.
I like this take as it makes the ending a good payoff because Chuck had to go through hell on the island, but he dodged a bullet as Kelly was not right for him and his outcome may have been worse if he would have not got on the plane and stayed home. This makes the journey worth it in the end.

@@RushWorkingMan sorry but I wasn't agreeing with you but that highlights my issue with this theory. Every single point towards her cheating can also justify why she wasn't cheating because everything is pure speculation. I think the best example of this was the original video on this topic when he mentioned the timeframe for her to have a kid and get over Chuck's death. The assumption is that 1 year is too short so she had to hooked up with the doctor a year before the accident. That's not how grief works. Nobody is on the same timeline and how do we know she didn't have the kid and then moved on? Unfortunately that happens. A person will "move on" before they have truly moved on because they want to believe they can just force it. The pocket watch gift is another that can be interpreted both ways and I prefer the idea of a symbolic gift that has a loving meaning vs how these theories looked at it from it's monetary value.

You gave me a lot to think about, albeit with a darker subtext than I read into the movie. There is a randomness to human lives, particularly for young people who drift around until they make the most critical decision of their lives. Although it may seem they take years to make a critical marriage decision, for a big part of that they aren't prepared for settling down. Decide too soon, with the wrong person, and you're not ready to do the kind of heavy lifting on both sides that sustaining a marriage requires. So I'll say a decision like that happens in a fairly narrow gap of life, often without as much thought as the immense gravity of the decision justifies. Rather than accusing Kelly of infidelity, I'll throw out a guess that she is the longer term victim. I suppose both are possible.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  7 месяцев назад +5

You make a good point about marriage, Kelly had already been married and everything in the first half of the film suggests that she had no intention of getting married again (at least not to Chuck), so it makes her marriage to Lovett even stranger for Chuck when he returns.

There'd have to be way too many coincidences in order for this analysis not to be true. I'm convinced! Well done.
Always knew there was something a bit off about the way Kelly interacted with Chuck, but all the times I've viewed this film was when I was a younger kid and didn't yet understand the way women's minds operate. Now that I'm older, I can see that Kelly displays virtually all of the signs of a woman who's just not that into a guy and is stringing him along only until she is able to secure for herself the man she really wants. I don't believe Kelly's portrayal was just a function of bad acting on Helen Hunt's part as some have said. I think Hunt is a good actor and played the role exactly how she was supposed to. Perhaps the director even filled her in on the subtext of what this movie is about (infidelity) so as to elicit the best performance possible out of her, but also told the cast not to overtly mention this subtext publicly, and to just let the more clever members of the audience reach this conclusion themselves.

There are studies showing that people interpret garbled speech as whatever a researcher tells them they are about to hear, even when different expectations are set for the exact same sound. I suspect that phenomenon is in play here. If the Director says your theory is not what was intended, it probably wasn't. Why would he lie? On the other hand, it's ironical that your version is a considerably more interesting story. Whatever's true, you've presented an entertaining and persuasive argument. Thanks for posting.

To clarify, Rob Zemeckis, Bill Broyles Jr., or anybody else are yet to comment 😅 Hypothetically, if Rob Zemeckis were to say that the betrayal theme wasn't intended, I would ask him what his intention actually was because all of this subtext doesn't just come out of thin air 😬 Personally, I prefer the David Lynch approach anyway: _“A film or TV show is like a magic act, and magicians don’t tell how they did a thing.”_

Anybody notice that Jigsaw's face is on TV in the background at the 18:47 mark, precisely when you're saying that their punishment for being bad is that they are stuck together? The TV is right behind the kid. Who watches Saw with their baby while eating? Are they "trapped" together because of the kid? Perhaps not by intention? Will one of them have to hurt the other to escape?
An accidental pregnancy hypothesis works with the rushed courtship timeline after the plane crash, and it ups the tension because it makes it reasonable to suspect they're together mainly for the kid and possibly not for love.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject

Your analysis of this movie is excellent. I always thought it was odd that Kelly's husband didn't jump out of his seat to help her when she fainted straight onto the floor. Do you think there is a hidden meaning behind Kelly's hair being cut so short?
Kelly probably did consider Chuck the love of her life. For one, there wasn't much competition for that title. For two, you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone. And three, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Sorry. This is a long one.
My wife loves this movie, I absolutely detest it. I've always hated it. ...until I watched both of these video essays. I actually wanted to rewatch it with her to see if this was right, and man... You were spot on. We couldn't believe it. I actually have a newfound respect for it because of the deeper meaning. I watched it when it originally came out, I was a young man with no real experience in the real world, so having him at a literal crossroads at the end, with nothing, just pissed me off. It was horribly sad.
After watching your analyses, I realize it's so much more. Here are the three points that stuck out to me:
1.) The crossroads at the end aren't hopeless or sad, he's lost (again) but can be found. He can still find happiness. The look on his face wasn't the bewilderment I originally saw, it was more that of aimlessly hopeful.
2.) I think he had time to let the relationship live and die on the island. He was out of his mind when he first got there, but as time went on he came to terms with it, overall. I think he was more in love with the idea of being in love, than actually being in love with her. It took the island shaking him to his core to make him realize that.
I don't know about you, but I'd imagine a lot of people in his position would've come back kicking and screaming and wanting their lover back. He would've driven off with her into the night, all others be damned, they would've figured it out later. Instead, he says "You have to go home". Not just replicating what she's saying, not really saying it in a wistful way, but being gently blunt and to the point. That's a man that came to terms with letting her go. We've seen movies where they said "All others be damned, we're gonna be happy". (Serendipity, for example.) And her relief of the team vs "You've been cheating on me" set that in stone for me.
Brings me to point 3.) His visit was closure, not trying to actually win her back. He was grilling her, albeit gently, but it was cathartic for him. You could see it on his face. I used to see it as a loving longing for things that no longer exist, but this time I saw it as an "Okay. I enjoyed watching you squirm, I needed it, but I'm now going to let you go. Good luck and goodbye." moment.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  6 месяцев назад +1

I think that you're spot on in all 3 points! 😃 I actually wish that I could go back and put your third point in this video - "His visit was for closure" - I can't believe how important this insight is, but it never even occurred to me to actually express the idea of getting closure in words; this was definitely a failing on my part 😭
In the next Cast Away video (covering Wilson and the island) I'll make a point of outlining Chuck's _closure_ and give you a credit as a 'genius commenter' like I did this in video 😁
I think that your second point also deserves coverage as a few commenters have even suggested that _"You have to go home"_ is actually Chuck rejecting Kelly; I believe this myself, but it's undermined in Chuck's monologue with _"We'd had both done the math"_ which is unfortunate, but if it's in the final cut then we can't really argue with it (or can we?) 😅

If this theory was indeed the real meaning it’s such a shame the studio didn’t go there in the end. I already really like this movie but it would have been at the very top table if it had this twist. If Chuck had confronted Kelly and his suspicions were confirmed it would have been a completely different story. I guess the meaning would have been the importance of having faith you are loved can pull you through the hardest of times… a beautiful lie can sometimes be better than the cold truth. Chuck wouldn’t have survived if he’d learned of her betrayal before he was stranded. If the child had been getting on towards 4! What a moment that would have been. Could have flashed back to the missed phone calls in a sixth sense style… maybe they could have added a scene where Kelly didn’t want an alcoholic drink at the family meal. There is nothing so pathetic as the guy who can only initiate a relationship when the woman is on the rebound after a breakup, a divorce, or a loss. Most of us have seen examples. I think you are spot on in your inference.

Oh man, I watched that before Christmas and that contemptible little story Ryan told about his brothers had me thinking that _Ryan probably wasn't worth saving_ 😅 Then I looked into it and Matt Damon improvised that story out of the blue so Hanks' shocked/appalled reaction was his real reaction and Spielberg just left it in the film 👏
I'm not sure if that's the kind of video I want to make though as Ryan was based on a _historical_ person and I could see any criticism of the _fictional_ character getting blown out of proportion 😬 I mean, I've already got people calling me names for this theory about Kelly, so imagine the fury if I went off on Private Ryan 😭

@ExtraCheeseProject My problem is with him is at the end of the movie. As he is standing over Cpt Miller's grave he says "I brought my family with me today". His wife walks up and he does the whole "tell me I'm a good man" bs and she says he is (lies). Then she looks down and reads the headstone like "Cpt James Miller". Clearly not knowing who it is. So this old fker has gone his entire life without so much as telling his WIFE... let alone his kids and grandkids... about the people who LITERALLY DIED so he could live?! They stayed there and fought when they didn't have to because he threw a little fit and didn't give a shit about how his mother was going to feel losing her FOURTH child.... they fought because HE wanted to stay and fight. And what does he do during the battle? He sits in the fetal position and screams! His wife should know their names. His kids should know their names... Hell his kids should be NAMED after them! But no.... They lose the medic and Vin Diesel just trying to find this random useless day one private... when all they have to go on is "he's probably in France". Then everyone except Riben dies defending this random ass bridge... and his whore wife reads the name on the tombstone like she just got somebody else's mail. What a grade a fkbag! FUBAR!

@ExtraCheeseProject and I've heard people say "oh look he never told her because he didn't talk about the war". BULL FKIN SHT! I've been to war... like 8 times. You don't have to tell your 4 year old grandkids about the dude who turned into man jelly because he didn't know how fuses work on the sticky bomb.... fine... but you damn well better have those men's names carried on forever! He should make her call out their names when they bang! GTFO here... Slapping Private Fkbag.... that's what the movie should be called.

I'm not sure I buy every point...the "duck" sounds like a Tom Hanks throat-whistle laugh, for example. But I do believe that the scene is pointedly saying she's not at home, and all that implies. I had noticed the awkward greeting and the look on the "honest woman" guy's face, but never put it all together. Well done! Now that you've pointed out this subplot, it's so obvious. Even the title is Cast Away, not Castaway. I already liked this movie, but this raises it another notch in my estimation.

@@ExtraCheeseProject What if the noise was from his end. Previous to that phone call he saw that the truck had a boot on it and said "put the table right here and we will just do the sort". As the camera pans around you can see that they brought some sort of small table with them. It's not too far of a stretch to imagine that they may have brought more than just that one table seeing as how small it was. Given the "doppler effect" character of this sound, (the rapid increase in pitch followed by a slower decrease and leveling out into the disappearing of the sound) coupled with the nature of the work they are doing, I would venture to say that they have set up an assembly line style of sorting everything and what we are hearing is a box being slid across a table (think of one of the long plastic picnic tables with the legs that fold up into itself).

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  7 месяцев назад +3

@@caseymahlum7772 During my analysis I listened to the ambient noise of that whole scene to try and figure out what the sound might be and I have to say that there's a lot of randomness to the design. Some sounds verge on strange, like when Chuck says _"And I'm gonna see you soon"_ it sounds like there's a robotic female voice speaking in an East Asian language to the right of Chuck, which is inexplicable. They also have cars beeping left and right with tires screeching and no feasible traffic in either direction. All I can say is that the sound design for this scene is a mess, but everything there is there intentionally, so it's my opinion that they put this sound in to signify more than just a sorting table 😬

    • @ExtraCheeseProject

That depends; Ridley Scott claims that Deckard was a replicant in Blade Runner (1982), but considering that they skip over this in Blade Runner 2049 (2017) I'd say that not many of the other creators agreed, yet Ridley seems to think it's the 'point' of the film and I guess some people agree 👍 There's also the various interpretations of The Babadook (2014) which Jennifer Kent says "were not my intention, but I'm happy to endorse them" (paraphrased).
Personally, I prefer filmmakers like David Lynch who will *never* discuss the _meaning_ of their work 😄
