I swear this guy is as much a cinematographer as he is a drainage/landscape expert! Who else is giving you video from all angles? Video facing the work. Video while riding behind and looking ahead. Video driving alongside. Video from a drone. The video is all so clear and focused too. You really get the TOTAL experience of being at the job.
You can keep your video games, fantasies and movies. I’d rather watch some real people getting real work done. Keep up the good work!
haha thank you RM. If you go way back on my channel you'll see no one watched my videos and they were super basic. Once people started watching my stuff I wanted to try and make better content. Now even more people are watching and I'm trying even harder with the videos. This video stuff does not come naturally to me and it's been a steep learning curve. I've had tremendous support and encouragement/direction/guidance from the youtube community as well.
I think even post 10 would approve of this work. Great job again Sean
He better keep those culverts clean
Haha his rake of approval.
Can't believe I put off watching. Turned out to be a fantastic episode !! Getting really good with the drone Shawn.
Thank you! I liked this one too.
I heard you the other day and mentioned Andrew camarata how he taught you how to fall trees in lay coverts and now you're digging Roots off of trees I watched this video so many times I'm sure glad I found your videos to watch now
If you're dragging trees like that, it would go much quicker if you would wrap a chain around the tree once and then around the bucket/arm of the excavator. As long as you have a decent quality chain you don't need to worry about it breaking. My dad and I would drag 20 foot logs out of the woods with his tractor like that back when I was in high school.
Good Monday afternoon to you all in the USA from Wellington Somerset in the UK
I can imagine how proud this is for you, not only to see your work finished, but also to have been part of creating a dreamlike landscape, a true beauty, my congratulations for the beautiful aerial shots....
thank you Ricardo!
These kinds of jobs make me nervous, rerouting nature's water path. Make's me wonder what happens down the line for the water. Fantastic footage of the stream landing being pumped out only to have it refill. Hopefully all that hard work will benefit all parties, Carson, the neighbor, and surrounding area.
Beautiful property
👍
Great job!
It still amazes me how “easily” you can go in and work around a wetland area like that. Up here in MA, DEP, conservation commissions, etc would have a field day. The amount of permitting and engineering plans needed would be astounding.
It's the same here. I interned at a wetland consulting firm while in undergrad as a field biologist and botanist and permitting is a big deal. In this case it's just a homeowner working with a very small area of already constructed habitat. If this was a natural wetland and it was being developed it would be a different story with a wetland delineation report (which I used to work on) and mitigation plan. Here 1 acre of destroyed wetland needs to be mitigated with 2 acres of created/constructed wetland.
@@GCFD Sounds like you have an interesting background, would love to see a video explaining your journey to where you are today.
@@GCFD I like that policy!
from the Netherlands thanks for the video and the update Shawn
Thank you!
I’ve actually wondered what happened with that pond so it was nice to see a follow up. The winter scenes at the end were beyond lovely. Have a great week. Look forward to your next video!
Thank you Claire! This property is almost an hour away so I don't get down there too often. I knew the pond finally filled up and have been meaning to get back there and the snow was too sweet to pass up. 👍
Great job Shawn. That was a lot of work but it turned out great, I know the customer is happy. The snow shots were beautiful. Those pipes are moving a lot of water.
Fantastic update Shawn! Pond is looking really nice, especially with all that snow. 👍
Yep I agree. I'm glad I braved the cold to get the footage.
11:38 "A laser never hurt anybody"
Uh, have you seeeen Star Wars? LOL
It was interesting to see the cloud forming from the infill purculating underground to the big pond in the drone view at arround 08:00. No wonder you could not pump it out!😄
@Jeremy Wilcox : I noticed that too. At first I was wondering if that water was coming through the dam. But when I saw that red, cloudy water it was a sure sign where the water was coming from. Maybe that spot he filled in will quick pumping by the time my grandchildren are my age... LOL...
Yes the area I was pumping was only a few inches higher than the neighbor's pond and the water was running into it once I filled in the dirt.
Some crushed rock or small river rock would look good on extension of the stream and also cut down on the silt that will go into the pond.. Awesome video, thank you for sharing.............
Yes he's planning to place more riprap in there and I recommended some soil stabilization fabric under it.
I learned a new word today, " contiguous ". Good work !
hahah, touching.
Nice catch up at a great-looking site.
"I think you need a Bigger boat!" I mean Escavator. LOL. Nice job allowing the stream to empty and the pond to flow to it, as if were natural! Leaving those grasses as decor and a little filter, nice.
the spinning frone footage i didn't like! Using the clay to disperse the water smart.
Great job GCF!
It looks Carson has another swamp starting on the other side of his pond damn. The opposite end from the overflow pipes. You can really "read" where the water is after the snow. Topography shows up well.
beautiful place
For sure. He's got an awesome property.
Great stuff, that is a nice area & a nice pond, the Dam looks superb with the width& the way it was graded out
What a great looking property! Carson is a lucky man to be able to play in all that space.
I agree. He's got a beautiful place. He's planning to start building his house in the next year or so and I'm hoping to be a part of that.
Red mud running into the little pond from the drone video.
👍
Job turned out very nice…
Don't know why, but I am ABSOUTELY hooked on your channel.
I check everyday to see if a new video dropped!
Keep up the fantastic work! 👍
Man that is a gorgeous property! I love a big pond like that!
He's got a wonderful place for sure.
Wow! What a job! Such nice snowfall too.
Yes I figured it was a good photo-op to catch the pond in the new snow. I have been meaning to get down there since the pond filled up a couple months ago.
That's a good looking pond. nice work touching it up
Yes he's got a beautiful property and the pond looks awesome!
As always very professional work.
thank you Steven!
Video production has stepped up considerably! Nice work!!
I always enjoy the videos! Nice work
Thank you David
Fantastic job and great drone footage! I instantly got nervous when you guys were burning the logs. I live in SoCal and we're always on fire here( Big Sur just kicked up ). You have so much precipitation to cancel it out though. 😊👍
Yes fire is scary for sure but everyone burns here.
This is North Carolina, out in the rural areas people burn leaves so much I’m not surprised we don’t have more fires.
Looks like leaky pond..
I love these videos Shawn, we need to see more like this, keep up the good work bro.
Thank you! I would like more of these as well.
That turned out really good good work. 👍👍😀🇨🇦
👍
Nice work, put some fresh water muscles and some karp fish in, and you will have clean water and nicely cut underwater vegetation...
Nice video at the last 10 minutes.
You got more snow down there in a week then we have in Jersey in 2 winters lol. Nice work
We had a few inches last week a couple more that morning.
Shawn, great job with the efforts in getting the water to where it needs to go. Fantastic job! One thing does surprise me is how short the overflow pipes are on the back of the dam. I have been watching Letsdig18 & Dirt Perfect for a few years now and every project, the pipe always ends up at or beyond the bottom of the dam (Or in your friends case, where his new fence begins). I just wonder about the erosion @25:26 sneaking around the riff raff!
What is riff raff
that's a great point Ron. I have mentioned it to the homeowner Carson and we are planning to do some concrete in place of the rip rap that the pond builders placed in there. Hopefully we can do that soon. I will definitely get another video from this property.
More Carson!
👍
Great vid, Shawn. For me, the only bad thing about it was the lack of drone snow angel footage! All that clean white snow! I'm sure you'll come up with some excuse, but I'm not buying it. Sometimes we need to let the inner child out to play! 🤪🤣😂
And, 'contiguous'! I giggled and said to myself, "Ooh, big words, Shawn!", in a very sarcastic manner...then stopped when I realised I didn't know what it meant! 🤔😅🤭 Sorry for the sarcasm and thanks for always improving my mind...and it's for free! Cheers and looking forward to another vid already 😊😊😊
Hey Tracy I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Being a scientist I have a pretty big vocabulary and sometimes it comes out! lol
@@GCFD ... all the better...I love words, the bigger the better. I learned antidisestablimementarianism as a 10-yo and have been fascinated by words ever since!
Keep in mind Earth Life can spell out all the proteins of all life on Earth with only four letters.
@@GCFD ... as an Aberdeen relative of mine would say, "Whit?" Give a lady clue, please?! 🤣😂
... am I just being an idiot (not for the first time)? Are you talking about a, c, g and t...? But what about a, c, g and u?
Real nice pond, it seems like the overflow pipes should be extended further to prevent erosion of the pond dam. Thank for filming.
I was just thinking the same thing. It might be a bit dangerous having those outflows slowly eroding away the dam embankment. To be on the safe side I would have done a concrete shoot to safely dispose of that water. Your thoughts?
@@mchipelo or extend the existing ones.
Yes I have mentioned that to Carson and he's going to closely monitor the area for now. I would like to get in there right away and do something but it's ultimately his land.
I suspect come spring, Carson will be in the market for an excavator. Good to see "Old Yeller" (my name for your trailer) out and about. Fun video. Thanks.
thank you Steven!
You should make them an off on that excavator. It’s junk now but you could get it fixed up!
I can't run it because of the weird JD control pattern. lol it was bad
@@GCFD Andrew Camerata always says they are junk anyways lol
Yay Sunday morning vidya
👍👍 I hope you enjoy
Yep, the water won't go any lower than the downstream pound you are trying to pump into, the pressure from this body of water is greater than the flow you can achieve with tour pump.
The snow here in Edmonton is melting but will harden again next weekend but it appears that it will be hovering around the freezing point after that if historical records are any indication...a long spring ... Cheers...
Wow a great follow up to the earlier videos! Just wondering if digging the diversion channel first would have made filling in the swampy area easier? Great project. I hope you get a chance to get a finished project video. The dock he is building looks like it will be impressive! 👍
Yes it probably would have been better to dig the channel first for sure. He's planning to build in the next year or so so hopefully there will be more videos.
You are truly a master of your craft, sir. Really appreciate you posting your videos.
Was hoping to see if you found the leak in the pond and/or how you resolved it, by the way. Did I miss that?
I want to buy a Gate City Foundation Drainage t-shirt!
👍👍 I haven't started selling them yet and I'm not sure I have time to. The blue shirts are very expensive too!
I'll tell you how that shot came out, ear piercingly loud haha. Great video man
👍
Ponds can be a pain in the neck... leaching, washout. The company where I worked got fined big time, one of our ponds overflowed and gave way and ash material went into the marsh land. He has a nice setup there, what is it used for... rec, watering livestock ? Enjoyed the drone footage, see you on the next job !
It's going to be used for recreation mostly. He's planning to build within a year or so.
Those outfall pipes definitely need extended beyond the face of the dam. That can quickly erode causing failure.
Snow Greensboro, at 36 Deg Lat, so Ya, I can see it.
We didn't have any snow last year, but had it twice this year. I ran down to the pond before it melted later that day.
26:10 Next time fly through the culvert, or no balls 😆 Much love
Haha. I've crashed that mini mavic so many times trying to get cool shots.
It's quite a haul, but HeavyD Sparks channel might make a road trip and pull that dead excavator out in exchange for, you know, keeping it. :-)
and it seems like his riprap channel isn't working properly at the overflow of his pound. You can see in the video that the water is eroding the slope on the right side of the riprap. It looks like he didn't dig a channel before putting down the rocks.
Is that a dock he’s building? I’d sure like to see the finished product. What a beautiful pice of property. Is he going to build a house? Love the channel. Rich in Florida
Hey Rich - He's building that dock, yes. He plans to build within the next year or so and I should be a part of that.
You need to save that clay for a core repair on the dam
👍
Hi Shawn, watching an old video of a French drain and I had a thought 💭. Have you ever thought of offering an option for a finished French Drain . Using grey cobblestone ish bricks. Bet it would look nice and finish. Bobby L
Yes! Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/8TT1M_dbcO8/видео.html the homeowner did a wonderful job of making the fd beautiful with stone.
I was surprised you didn't advise the owner that digging a trench/ditch would have been the best thing to do first as it would have help drain the area that was filled with dirt
The trench/culvert could of been alot cleaner. I'm spoiled how letsdig18 makes it very clean and smooth.
Yes we were trying to create a channel to contain the water instead of a huge marshy area.
@@robleonard99 letsdig is great. Waiting on Barney to be used.
Thanks Shawn. Just sitting here sipping coffee and watching Gate City on a sunny Monday morning. How is the lake fed and did you get a new truck?
You could have dug a test hole to see where the ground water level is? It looks like the pond is higher ??
The entire area has groundwater around it and is only a few inches higher than the downstream pond.
If im the neighbor, i got screwed…now ive got a direct silt feed into my pond, and the neighbors runs clean….
I don't understand what you mean?
@@GCFD you routed a silty creek into their pond, so now their pond is essentially a silt trap…it will always be chocolate milk color every time it rains and take weeks to settle out the particles…the pond you did only is fed from the rain and the grass slopes, it will be much cleaner.
I know this because a neighbor tried to route two feeds into my pond because their property kept flooding…i agreeed to be neighborly, i live in NC too, and within one good rain, my pond went from a brackish black, 3ft plus visibility to a complete silty chocolate milk.
Its the same set up you did here, you routed a clay/silt stream into the pond…it will never settle out that silt long enough to get any visibility back.
I made the neighbor bring the crew back and plug it back up
8:08 yep the neighbors pond was leaking, see all the red water from your dirt you put in
The neighbor's pond is downhill from this pond so the water was running into their pond.
A solo job occasionally makes for a fun job. I would love to try a full size excavator for a day.
John those controls were so different to me that it was awful. JD often has their own stuff from what I hear.
@@GCFD I can only imagine you expression when you were trying to figure out the controls. Truly enjoyed this one.
@@GCFD there is a way to adjust it. But it requires swapping hydraulic lines around
I was dumbfounded Ryan when I was looking for a pattern selector switch like on my two Kubota machines.
@@GCFD only mini excavators have a selector switch. Older John Deere your boom is on the left joy stick, stick or dipper is on the right joy stick. Industry standards or Cat controls boom is on right joystick and stick or dipper is on left joystick.
that dam be leakin
Cool video Shawn, thanks for sharing, fun to watch. Have you ever mentioned or done a video on your drone model, what model do you have ? Love the footage, tempted to get one but you know, money 🙃 I wonder what the stats are for drone batteries failing over water and losing drones in water.
I haven't done a video on the drones. Do you think anyone would be interested? I'm still learning about them that's for sure.
@@GCFD I think they would even just an intro like you did on your cameras, people are always interested in gear and your drone footage is second to none, I know I would be interested if you got some extra time, would love a video talking about the drone when you ready.
Wouldn't it have made more sense to dig the drainage ditch from the stream feeding the swamp before filling in the swamp?
Yes that would have made more sense but he didn't have much room for the loads of dirt. By spreading the first two he was able to get a few more loads in and spread with the tractor before I could get down there with my ex.
@@GCFD
Use some rubber pipe couplings and 4" PVC to build a temporary siphon?
Hi Shawn @ Gate City. My dad and I watch all your updated videos. My father just made a comment on how your names for these videos should be (Dronage for Drainage) lol what do you think!
that's pretty cool!
LOL!! they call it the JD pattern, I hate it.
I figured it was something like that. I was less than useless running it that's for sure.
looked like one of the overflow pipes had much less flow than the other?
Great job but it needs about 20 more loads to kind do it correctly…imo…
Looks like someone’s enjoying using their new 360 camera 🤣.
What model is it?
Congrats on another very watchable and informative vid. 👍
Fun to watch, with the neat drone footage.
Do you think it would be helpful to datestamp your videos?
I don't know if that would be helpful or not. The video file has a datestamp on it.
@@GCFD I meant for the viewer to see. This particular video was from three different segments and I thought it would be interesting to see when they were taped.
It’s all good. 🙂
oh great point! Yes this was a few different segments that I put together into one video.
15 - 18 or 24 ADS N12 pipe. No such thing as 20”
👍
What are your thoughts on dry wells when the water sits in the well under the turf and slowly drains back into the soil. I don't have the option to drain the water into a street or some where there is a drain.. How can I tell is the soil is good enough to allow the water to percolate back in?
Dig a post hole as deep as you can. Fill it with water and leave for a day. Put something hard to move over the hole for safety. Next day refill it and record the depth of water over time as it soaks away. That will give you an idea of the rough amount of water that will soakaway per hour. The actual soakage rate will depend on the shape of the soakaway, a trench is better than round as it has a larger area in contact with the soil. To do a proper design there are spreadsheets online.
I never understand ppl wasting good logs. At the very least it can be used for bon/camp fires.
We have so many logs here. They have yard waste recycling places where you can dump them for around $40/ton. I'm talking acres of lots piled 20' high. If I can find someone who will let me dump them for free I'll travel miles with my dump truck.
@@GCFD in Michigan getting free wood from fallen trees is the best thing. Wood is expensive. 🤓
Did you get new truck? Loved the last truck video!
Duncan - I did get that truck but I didn't look closely enough at it before I bought it. It's taken me a couple months to get it running and it's not right yet. Carson is my mechanic, BTW so we help each other out.
@@GCFD It’s a beautiful truck! What are coincidence that he’s your mechanic, I think your audience would get a kick out of that. Btw, thanks so much for your videos. They’ve inspired me to add about 200ft of French Drain around the perimeter of my property. Two zones with two perforated pipe each (like your videos). Full Bubble on the discharge as far as I could go and all Schedule 40! Now waiting for rain!
Were the two pumps below the pond water level? Must have just kept filling up!
Yes the water was flowing in from the second pond and I was pumping in circles.
Were those animal tracks coming out of the pond at 24:47? You crossed over them on the way to the water's edge.
They were muskrat tracks best I could tell. My copy of the Trappers Bible doesn't have snow tracks but that would be my guess.
The two overflow pipes are likely to wash some of that loose fill into the pond when there is heavy rainfall.
There needs to be more rip rap in the channel from the pipes to the pond.
that's why you watch the whole video.
Yes and some soil stabilization fabric under the riprap. They are going to do that and move the riprap by hand! I offered to do it for them to save all that labor.
That looks really nice, but I am concerned though, after watching letsdig18 for years now, I clearly see problems. First, did he put down erosion control mats under the riprap?
If he did so, would advise to take the riprap out, make a small "birm" on the sides, put down the mat again, and put on the riprap again, that will otherwise dig itself down, and you could also clearly see the water running on the sides of the riprap down to the ditch
And, the water going backwards like that, since the below pond was below the grade about 5, you already know that the water would not flow backwards, or at least should not
I dont know.. feels like we are going to see a dam failure a few years in the future, I hope by the lord I am totally wrong here, but he should be extremely careful , the first sign of the dam failures, then the company leaving that excavator behind and all...a whole lot of nope´s in my world :(
And why in the world did he burn the wood besides the other trees? wanted to start fires and to kill those trees with the heat? :o
But as always, you help your friend out, you are a good person!
Yes I mentioned adding some soil stabilization fabric under the rip rap and he's going to do that. He wants to do it by hand to keep the rock clean even though I offered to move the rock, place the fabric, then replace the riprap with my machines. That's just a lot of labor. He also wants to add a bunch more dirt on either side of the outlet to build things up more.
Hi
HI
nothing is as unfixable as a John Deere
The dam is leaking
Why do you say it's leaking?
@@GCFD Well there seems to be a lot of water below it. Maybe it's running off from another place I can't see on the video.
@david perry it’s coming from the stream off to the left. We dug that channel to give the stream a more direct path into the lower pond.
shadow shows a stick, hand looks like its holding a stick, but no stick...
that's the 360 camera. I've been trying to get used it using it.

@@GCFD I didn't mean to be rude. It's just that I love to hear your explanations and thoughts. And the music makes it hard when I have to change the volume up and down
Agreed. This was shot with a couple different cameras so my voice was up and down.
Hi, is your skidsteer voice activated? :) ruclips.net/video/DBrD-r0jge0/видео.html . Nice video with progress over many months. Water still seems to go right from the overflow, what about bringing in some more dirt to force it go straight into next pond?
Yes I have to whistle to it as a security deactivation device. he is planning to get a bunch more dirt and build up the entire area on either side of the overflow.
@@GCFD Didn't know, this is a thing. I thought, you are just enjoying the beeping of machine.

For sure. He's going to start building in the next year or so. I'm hoping to be a part of that.
