COTURNIX QUAIL LAYER CAGE MODS - Fixing some issues

- Making some modifications to my Coturnix Quail layer cages. After a year of using the cages I designed and built I found a few issues that needed modifying to make the cage even better.
Luckily, we've worked with the auto drip pans before with our rabbits so we automatically added 6" to your design when we built our quail cages. We've had no issues. We also spray painted the trays with rustoleum prior to installing them.
Nice way to make changes and use little to no new material. Btw almost have your incubator build complete thanks for the great info and ideas!
Glad you are enjoying the channel 😀
Thanks for the update. Great content.
Wish I would've seen this before building the cage based on the other video.
Nicely done
Thank you!
Great video, nice fix!
Thanks
Fabulous!
I copied your cages and I’m having the same issue thanks for the update be interested to see if the rust oleum works
You're cages are very nice
Thanks Marius
Terry I was thinking of doing something like this too thanks for doing this video really was great to see how you did it as I built my cage like yours.
@@richross4415 thank you, I think it’s going to work out well.
Just starting my rollout cages and added the 2 inches to each layer dropping the total 6 inches down the legs.
Fantastic video very informative, I noticed you used all mesh for the doors of the cage and I wondered what are the clips you use as a hinge?
Thank you again where do you get your pans at?
We made the hutch and put it outside. Great hutch but the wild birds started stealing the eggs out of the trays lol. So we put wire strips left over from making the cages to cover the eggs.
Any more problems? I want outside ones too.
I saw that issue since I wanted deeper pans, my cages are shorter and no legs, has a pen ht of 39" and sits on a table.
What’s the best way to go about a staggered hatch with one incubator
Hi Terry, need your help. How big is the opening between the bottom the the drip pan to the top of the egg roll out opening after you made this modification? 4inches?
This maybe a weird question but how big around is a quails leg in Millimeters ?
I want to band my birds when I hatch them to keep chart on them .
I have a small quail pen in my garage with 9 birds. I went ahead and did the oil pan set up as well. Any way to help with the smell. I change the shaving out daily. Still makes the garage smell. Any advice? Thank you
were do you get the metal trays
I see that each tier is basically a whole cage, or it appears. Just wondered how your birds get along. I'm assuming you have multiple roosters in same cage with all the hens. Have you ever thought about subdividing those tiers to reduce your rooster count per cage? Also, what advantages have you experienced keeping your cages that way? TIA
If you raise quail mainly for eating eggs and meat, should I still have mail in the cages? I'm trying to determine my square foot per cage.
How tall is the inside of your cages now?
Is there a video of the building of these cages?
Is there a way to see or figure out of an egg is fertile before incubation?
Where is the video to build these cages? Thanks!
I made the same adjustments on my cages right before I watched the video.
You might try spray truck bed liner on the pans
There’s an idea
Terry I have question about the incubator I built like yours but have a larger fan which only allows for one. The wire that's on it has a connection end that would have to be cut off. How do you wire it up to the power supply 12v.
If you have a volt meter you can test your 12 volt PS for positive and negative, then wire direct to the fan after cutting off the connector. If it’s a three pin connector the center wire should be hot. Good luck
I am building two cages this weekend. I am doing two tiers on each instead of three for a total of 4 cages. I want each cage to be 48” high and 48” wide. I found 47” drip pans at NAPA. I am doing the version with egg rollout. So after this MOD what are the measurements for each tier? I would like to have 12” height on each cage.
Hi Mariah. What measurements did you end up using? I’m planning on building in the next few weeks. Any tips you have would really be appreciated.
Hi Terry, I'm trying to combine all the mods that you made with the roll out bottoms and having the extra space. You said you removed the extra 21in side pieces that you had glued in originally. I didn't see you replace them in the video. Did you? And if not is there a gap in between the roll out bottom and side wall wire?
Actually, I just went back and looked and it looks like you did put them back in and angled it a but to match the slope of the roll out bottom. Right?
Hello!! =) have a nice day y´all
Hello great video. On the grow out cages if you turn some into smaller cages. Would 1'x 2' cages hold 5-6 birds at a time. And how many waterers would you put in each cage. Or would you go wider cages.
A 1’ X 2’ cage is 2 sq ft, so at 3 birds per sq ft technically you could keep 6 birds. I would probably only do 3 or 4 in a cage that size. I like to have multiple waterers per cage in case one fails you have a backup. I do prefer the larger cages.
@@CoturnixCorner what size of cage would you do 5-6 birds in
@@johnniebunton4978 maybe a two by three
@@CoturnixCorner ok thanks for your time and help.
where did you get your poop pans?
I use the watering cups but the quail sit on them when its hot causing it to drain all the water out making a mess
Mine will do that too, I built little wire cages over top of the watering cups to keep them from standing on them. There is a video on the channel showing this.
Put some slipcoat paint on them trays
How many quails do you put in a 2 x 6 cage?
36
3per sqft for jumbos or 3.5 per sqft for standards
2 x 6 gives you 12sqft
I have 200 eggs in the mail... My 3rd hatch.
I copied your cages and I’m having the same issue thanks for the update be interested to see if the rust oleum works
Will keep you updated
