  • The final match of the Louis Vuitton Semi-Final was sailed today. It is now official that Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team will meet INEOS Britannia in the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, to decide who will be the Challenger for the 37th America's Cup. I spoke to James Spithill about the racing, and what is to come.
    With LRPP's win, it was also time to farewell the amazing NYYC American Magic. I spoke to Andrew Campbell, Tom Slingsby and Terry Hutchinson. We are all good mates in this sport - but there always has to be a winner and a loser.
    More tomorrow for the first day of Group B in the UniCredit Youth America's Cup.

    As an Italian I just want to congratulate my American fraternal friends, because you fought until the last meter, as a Luna Rossa fan I can safely say that you made me "suffer" a lot, for this reason when we When I crossed the finish line I rejoiced and shouted like crazy, because in front of us we had a great team, great rivals, and let's face it, this was the real final of the Louis Vuitton Cup 2024 If only there had been "normal" conditions, but surely there will be other great challenges waiting for you, because you have shown what it means to never give up, you have been Really hard bones, American bad boys 😉😊, now I hope you cheer for us guys, because I have a dream unfortunately locked in a drawer since I was a child, finally bring the cup home, to Cagliari, and see The Final American Magic win the 2028 Louis Vuitton Cup by beating Team New Zealand in the final and then play the 2028 American's Cup final in Italy between Luna Rossa Vs American Magic, unfortunately it will be difficult to beat Ineos Britannia, and then in this case those who have always had us beaten, Emirates Team New Zealand, but I continue to dream since it costs nothing. I greet you with much affection, American brothers, bye!! 😉💪🏻

    This is such a brutal event. I can't think of another sport where hundreds of people work for years and can be knocked out after just a week of competition. And their beautiful $100,000,000 boat is now effectively scrap.

      one thing about these boats and really the iacc boats is they dont have much of a life after the cup. 12 meters and the j class have had great lives after the cups. love these boats but i wish they could be run by private owners not just corporations

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 10 часов назад +1

      @@nicholaycalhoun1681 They're so high-tech that it takes a huge team just to keep them running - a bit like old F1 cars. And it takes weeks of simulator work and practice for a crew to keep them sailing, with the potential for the kind of catastrophic and dangerous crash we saw with Magic in Auckland.
      So it's difficult to see how they could be widely used. Their main role, I think, will be practice racing against the next generation. Teams will want to know the relative performance of their most recent design.
      But when they change the class spec, I suspect they will all be scrapped.

    I don't understand what was going on in this series. When American Magic was staying close to Luna Rossa then they held their own, they did not seem slow. But the moment Luna Rossa got any separation - they were pulling away massively straight away. 2 first races, where American Magic had a decent lead form the start - they should have won both those races by simply "controlling" the other boat by staying with them. Isn't it how this is done in this race format? So what was that about? Slingsby forgetting the rules of the game? Or not sailing right when sailing on his own (bad VMG)? Or not able to figure out the right side of the course for more wind EACH time he makes such decision?

    • @burtonsville
      @burtonsville 8 часов назад

      Good observation. Plenty of people have questioned whether they had enough hydro from the recumbent cyclors. Perhaps they weren't confident they had the energy output to win a full on taking dual?

    • @user-hz3eu5in
      @user-hz3eu5in 2 часа назад

      @@burtonsville Not sure. But I doubt American Magic could have built a system/roster for cyclors which ended up being a serious competitive disadvantage. Difficult to measure "performance" of a helmsman or a trimmer in any sort of meaningful way. But Cyclors? Their performance can easily be measured. They even show it during AC races, showing watts generated by each cyclor in real time.

    I’ve been saying what let them down AM was the recumbent bikes the power out put is not as powerful as a cyclor design of their boat was sleek and slick

    Reclining cyclors were a big mistake, obviously not enough downward force over the pedals. Which was making them fall of the foils to often, doubt we will ever see them again.

    • @DaveNorthrup
      @DaveNorthrup 12 часов назад

      Can you elaborate? I haven’t seen any data from the prelims or semis to support the claim that the recumbent cyclor design was a weakness for them. I’ve heard it mentioned as an issue (mainly the commentators and @mozzysails) and am just curious if there’s data on it. I find it hard to believe the designers and engineers wouldn’t perform calculations or testing before proceeding with the design.

      I’m no expert but I think AM opted for sleek and more streamlined aerodynamics while the other teams went for higher topsides and upright cyclors.
      And AM looked to struggle in the power dept poss due to not as much hydraulic power from recumbent cyclors?

    Tom slingsby is a natural racer, when they hit the front they couldnt seem to be able to out tack lunna rossa in a match race. Maybe not enough hydraulic pressure to go head to head tack after tack with the reclined cyclors.

      Fabio - I disagree. That was really, really close. I certainly had LRPP to win before the semi-final. But they took 3 races off you in a row. They led several earlier races, which they only lost by tiny margins. They made a few small handling errors that LRPP pounced on brilliantly. Respect to Luca - what a performance. But if Goodie had not got injured, they would have won.
