This is a great lesson, John. Your ability to break down a complicated process into manageable steps and to explain it in a relaxed, down to earth manner is exceptional. Thank you!
The only way to play. I am Luigi Denza's great grandson, and I have the music in my head. I play jazz and classical on flute and do not read music. See the music and play.
Thank you I feel I should know all this having played all my long life but I was taught to read the music and dont know another way to think. Its been my life's wish to play by ear, now i just need to get well enough to put these steps into practice. Thanks👍🙏
Great. Thanks! You stopped at chord melody at step 8. Maybe, you could have added a couple of more steps... Left hand arpeggio, a few rhythmic styles, few interesting chords.. Etc..etc 😊 Loved this anyway.
In the paid version of the course it goes in depth. They actually have a ton of ear training courses for all levels. I've been a member for jist over a month and following their beginner path.
Thank you, John, for setting this out step by step. You are a good teacher. For many, though, this will take much effort, time, and patience - as one's got to hang in there! In my situation, Solfege has helped me immensely.
im one of them luckily too. could play correctly the melodyline i heard on radio on my plastic accordeon as a 3yr old. but my talent got wasted for classical music. took years to recover traumatas and go back to living music.

My 7 year old could play by ear at 3 years old. Some people have it - some don’t.
I learned it after a year of playing at 23 years old

But everyone can develop it, no excuse.
