HS2 Timelapse | Excavating a cross-passage inside HS2's longest tunnel

  • The construction of HS2’s longest tunnels - stretching for 10 miles under the Chilterns - has passed a key milestone with mining completed for 19 out of 38 emergency cross-passages linking the northbound and southbound tunnels.
HS2 trains will travel through two parallel tunnels linked by short passages for use in emergencies. Unlike the main tunnels, which are being excavated by two giant tunnelling machines - named Florence and Cecilia - these smaller cross-passages are dug using remotely controlled mini-excavators.
An expert team of miners use the excavators to break out of the southbound running tunnel and dig the 15-20 metres to the adjacent northbound tunnel. As the excavation progresses the ground is supported using a sprayed concrete lining (SCL). Afterwards, a water-proof membrane is installed followed by a secondary concrete lining constructed by placing concrete behind formwork installed in the cross passage.
Once the cross-passages are complete, they are temporarily sealed for fire safety reasons before permanent safety doors can be installed at either end. Each running tunnel has an emergency walkway that allows passengers to safely evacuate the train and walk through the cross passages into the other tunnel where they can be rescued on a passenger train.

Just hope that in future years this tunnel can be used to its full capacity with 17 trains per hour as opposed to the current 6-8 planned due to the cancellation of further hs2 legs. Thank you Sunak (sarcasm).

No one has planned the time tables yet, but as Avanti West Coast will be running the HS2 train services and that 99% of Birmingham Trains will transfer from the New Street line to run on HS2 line plus most Manchester, Liverpool and Scottish services there will be more than 6-8 rains per hour.

@peterwilliamallen1063 Hmm, so what happens when everything runs together at Handsacre Junction in Staffordshire and fights over the (unchanged) four-track route to Crewe. Then the Winsford two-track section. And so on to Scotland.
Great to see phase one building. Long-term planning needs a resurgence in this country. We shall re-learn this national skill one day....

@@daveallen2565 Or perhaps the UK should have looked at changing how it approaches projects like these as a whole, why did it cost nearly £250-300 million in planning applications alone for things like the Elizabeth Line? Why does it cost us nearly ten times more than our French, Italian and German counterparts per mile for equivalent infrastructure? HS2 is much needed, how this country approaches these things is what must change.

@@mikehindson-evans159Do a bit of research like I do and stop guessing and reading the London daily comics, also did you read what I put and what will happen to train services on the WCML when HS2 opens, considering all trains are planned up front a put on a time table with very close gaps between trains due to the modern signaling systems and modern trains, nothing will happen at Handsacre as nothing will run together, next Avanti West Coast Trains will be running both the high speed Inter City Trains on the existing WCML through Rugby to London Euston but also Avanti will be running all Inter City trains on the HS2 route to London Euston via Birmingham with at least 90% of Avanti West Coast High Speed passenger services transferring from the WCML onto the HS2 route at Handsacre with a very small amount of Avanti West Coast Services using the existing Trent Valley Route from Crewe to London via Rugby.

Half a job as you put it is hardly the fault of HS2. At the outset the client in this case the government would asked for a brief from interested parties. The chosen contractor in this case HS2 limited would have made a proposal with accompanying budget. As it's turned out the way over the top cost overruns are due in no small part to a constant shifting of the goalposts by the client and it's representatives, the blame simply can't be laid at the doorstep of the contractor or it's subsidiaries for all the woes that has befallen the project. Not a good advertisement for the country,or it's politicians I'm afraid.

Nice to see the levelling up fund being spent on the South again. 32 miles of tunnels and vanity bridges in the south are the reason this project is so over budget. The 20 million in the North have been ignored again. HS2 is only half a job now.

Tall enough to evacuate people. That's all you need in an emergency. A cross passage every quarter mile throughout the ten-mile tunnel under NIMBYland.

Funnily enough that's exactly what happened in Spain where the trains are too big to go through a tunnel. But here I think this video refers to cross passages for personnel evacuation needs only.

I wonder if they would play the same tune if you witnessed the utter carnage and destruction of 40 ancient forests 🌳 😢 all in the name of so called progress that’s over budget and can’t even be finished
Bet it’s not happening on your doorstep is it

We are spending more than £50bn to put back just some of the rail capacity bean counter Beeching closed down in the sixties. Now half of the project has been abandoned by bean counter Sunak. Seeing a pattern here.
