- While repairing my 150 year old working antique Cider Mill a devastating storm rolled through my community causing untold damage to many gardens.
Find out what damage this storm did as it interrupted my family visit and Cider Press.

Hail is just one of the things we gardeners have to deal with. This builds patience and tolerance. Glad you are able to share your good fortune with others that were not as fortunate. Looks like your apple pressing is a family affair, how sweet is that! The cider looked great (wish I was there to share). Saw that you used the "mash" as compost. You may also think about making some apple spice bread, that would be tasty.
Gardening is full of lessons !
It is a family effort to get the cider made and it is a family effort to enjoy it too!
Next batch I'll have to save some for an apple spice bread !

Man, that hail can be really devastating! I lost my whole container garden some years back due to a massive hail storm, along with my roof! In fact, my roof has been replaced 3 times because of that nasty stuff, along with over 100 holes put into my greenhouse! That was before my YT days! I'm glad it didn't do any more damage than it did to your garden!
Oh its so damaging I am glad my roof has been fine as that is quite the expense!
Hello my friend, condolences from central Alberta! Last year we had a huge hail storm and I'm not kidding when I say I shed a tear or two. So far this year, only 3 very small sized hail episodes and hoping that is all. I started a food forest this year in my front yard in addition to the gardens out back and hail is the last thing it needs! Love your channel as most gardening channels are in zones that I can only dream of. Keep up the good work!
I saw last years storm in central Alberta. It was rough ! This one was bad but I got off lucky !!

I almost cried when I saw your hailstorm! Hope everything is going well now. Love your antique cider mill!!! Glad it is still producing cider. I used mine to press juice for making apple wine. Haven't given it a try yet, but soon.
I am still waiting to see if the damage is more severe.
The mill is doing me well. I just transferred the first batch tonight :)

Great video, Stephen. Glad you had just minimal damage and glad you are reaching out to those who were less fortunate. We had a strong storm here in Maine yesterday. Many trees around came down in the community. The only thing it bothered in my garden is I have some leaning 7 feet tall corn plants, but I think they will survive. There was no lightning just hail at that point. It put me at ease to know they were alright.

At least the hail didn't stop the cookout! We got hit on May 30th.Tore my pepper plants up, left me with just stems, but they came back! They're flowering & fruiting now, should be able to harvest in a couple of weeks.
Nice looking cider mill. Between the cider and the wine, you must have 3 or 4 refrigerators, right.LOL!

Colorado Springs got almost 2 and half feet of hail just the other day, so feel blessed you didn't lose it all.
It could always be worse ! I sure hope they are able to salvage things there.
Hail is strange stuff for some reason very rare here. Lived here all my life and have never seen a damaging hail storm. Glad your garden wasn't too badly damaged. Looks like a great old press.
It's common in Alberta but usually a spot here or there nothing like the wave we had.
The press is from the Niagara falls area and my parents drove it out last year. I am quite happy with it !

Yup ! Storms keep coming every night about 6 pm and let's hope no one has any more damage !

Sorry to hear about your garden. At least most of it is alright. I don't know what i would do if my grape died, honestly I would probably shed a single tear. I can't believe I haven't heard about any hail, I live just east of Edmonton and the weather has been perfect.
some of my grapes I can't replace. I would be devastated if I lost them!

You got lucky, not too damage. Your Dad looks like a fun guy, it's cool you guys working together on the mill. Last week, a very strong wind/rain storm hit my area, NYC zone 7, I lost a few small plants and a few five gallon buckets almost got knocked over!
Weather sure can do a lot of damage quickly hey !

You should build a simple temporary greenhouse, 20 foot bendable PVC and some greenhouse cover. Or you could even visit a place like harbor fright and get a cheap carport setup, under 400 easy

wow, that was a mean hail storm! Good to see that your garden survived. We recently had a thunderstorm too so I was eyeing my garden as well. All is well...but we didn't have those massive hail!

Hello Stephen, Glad there wasn't a total loss! About the hopper...you might want to use a poly cutting board! it's not antique but easy to clean, durable, sanitary, and will last a long time! a 3/4" thick will do fine! if you need any, I would be glad to send you some! just send me approximate dimensions you would want! Take care
I wonder if I could line the inside of a nice wooden one with that stuff. Do you think it would work?
Sure...if you have a compound miter saw! Then use a 1/2" thick poly which I have as well! Approximate dimensions of the finished size would help! We custom cut these into cutting boards and have plenty of miscellaneous sizes laying around!

Even if I could a replant would not do me much good right now. Our season is far to short. This said I think we are alight so it's all good !

That so cool. I lost all of my tomato plants due to blossom end rot. Would love to have someone share theirs with me. I have a overload of okra I could exchange for them. As far as I know, I'm the only gardener in my area. Glad to see your plants are ok.
Look for local garden groups on social media like Facebook. You will be surprised how many people enjoy gardening. Who knows you might get a nice exchange going !

I had been searching for it and finally found one that a fellow in the southern most part of one of our Eastern provinces. It's about 3 days of 12 hour driving away.
My parents were so nice as to bring it back for me !
Nice mill. I'm of course not sure, but that turning wheel for the pressing seems to have two handles because a lever is intended to nestle between them for added mechanical advantage.
I am afraid to add any more pressure as I broke it last year and this piece is irreplaceable !

We have a long Swedish heritage that is proud to have come from Sweden. That said we have been a LONG term Canadian family.
Got my cider mill out today. Three of us did three large garden carts full of apples. Results three carboys of juice. siphoned off 2 gallons from a carboy that has been sitting for 2 years for the helpers to take home besides the the carboy of fresh juice.
Lost 4 big heigh limbs from my 100 year old trees plus the apples that are falling so there is still a cart full of apples on the ground so I hope fore some more helpers tomorrow.
And yes I put my pulp in the compost bin. there is a lot of dry weeds and spent plants in there and I don't water it enough but the pulp is damp and heavy and gets the worms to come up and start working each year.

I currently have three batches running just waiting to see if I can find more trees to harvest !
***** Yes but mine is spread over 5 acres and my winters are much milder. When school starts we will again have the students and teachers bring apples to experience the process.

I guess the "No deer allowed" sign didn't work as well as expected.
My neighbourhood doesn't have back yard fences so can't keep them out. But there is a 6ft deep ravine across the back end of the yard and I can fence off both ends. I don't think they will jump down there. That will have to become my orchard.
I lucked out here too. At one point on Sunday, I saw twin funnel clouds come down and go back up. We received some hail but 7 miles to the west of us, the farmers lost everything to golf ball size hail. Quite a few farm buildings were knocked down but no deaths or serious injuries. The wind chewed up my tomatoes a little. I had to harvest quite a few green ones that were on broken branches.
These summer storms can be nasty eh. Glad you did ok !!
***** Me too! I have lucked out twice this season. I storm that was carrying baseball size hail, dropped all its hail as it crossed over Lake Sakakawea which is an impoundment on the Missouri. The same storm devastated the town of Killdeer.

***** At least, I have not been hit hit by hurricane force winds here this year. Last year, I got nailed twice.
we are in Calgary and got hit hard with golf ball sized hail. many cars and gardens are damaged. about 50% of our garden has seen better days. I guess it is not bad considering we could have lost everything.
That's how I look at it too. It was not great for me but I have family whom lost 100% perennials and annuals.
Sorry man. I moved from Calgary to NB about 6 years ago. Hail in summer, crazy. You're continuing to lean out, good for you.

Central Edmonton got hit really bad on Wednesday, and all I could do is stand at the back door almost weeping! I lost all 4 of my cucumbers types, my peas, kale, and dill. My big beautiful cabbages look like they have been shot with machine guns, and the potatoes and beets pretty much have no greens left. It's hard to say if the carrots are ever going to stand up again, same with the onions. Only the celery came away unscathed, being under a lilac tree. An hour after the storm, there were still marble sized hail in a thick layer on my black heat sink of a trampoline.
I am sorry for the loss you suffered. We got our hail Thursday night and it devastated large areas.
Get out there and harvest what you can. No use it going to waste.
At least you got some apples this year. my crop was destroyed by a scrub Jay, he pecked at them before they ripened.
I lost all of my apples this spring to a late frost. The ones I have are from a friends !
My garden got pounded here in Saskatchewan at the end of June! Some plants bounced back some didn't. I have a video of it if you care to see it!

Yeah, the hail caused tons of damage to property as well as the garden. That was in 2013, we're due another ugly hailstorm. We've had from pea to quarter size so far.
Thanks for letting me know about that pepper, I'll be looking for seeds. Husband wants several types of peppers grown. =)

Did you mention before that you have bird baths in your yard, and that is how you keep birds from pecking your tomatoes and taking your blueberries?
No bird baths or feeders in the yard as I dont want them there and pecking at my crops ;) they are around but just the ones whom are attracted to feed on slugs.
Very cool that mill. Do not know anyone at this time that does woodworking on that hopper project. May I suggest Lee Valley. They haveaccess to vintage woodworking tools and manuals. They ship all over Canada and the USA. Steve I have been following you for a while now and I am interested in your electrical conduit for your trellesis. Did you use galvanized steel or plastic and what diameter do you recommend? Thanks Steve

A hail storm destroyed my garden in early may. thankfully it was early enough in year to start over.

Bro, any tips for mice control in the yard?
I maintain an active garden with a few bird feeders and naturally it's a heaven for mice. Any effective tips for eliminating these bugger mice? PS I can't have a cat in the house to help.
Live traps are fairly effective but must be maintained.
Other than that reducing their access to a food source may be of value.

Here is the original patent document for your cider mill (I think). Yes, I am a research geek! Anyway.... It has an illustration that shows what the original hopper looked like, in case you wanted to duplicate the original design. Seems pretty basic.
