Way back in nineteen seventy-something I was working as a draftsman, drawing utility maps for the Cal-American water company in Thousand Oaks, California. No one else was available when we got an emergency call about a busted fire hydrant. I was sent out with a valve handle (T-handle) and an address. I waded thru knee-deep water under a waterfall 50 feet high, trying to find the 6 inch round steel valve cover under all that water. Mind you this was my first and only time doing this, with no training whatsoever. After several soaking minutes of searching, I found the steel plate and tried to pry it open with the tool they had given me. Turns out it had been paved over recently and the asphalt hadn't been trimmed properly so the new paving was holding the cover down securely. A police officer and Emergency Medical Technician assisted with whatever tools they could muster and we finally got the cover off after about 30 minutes of agonizing effort. I shut the valve and stopped the geyser. The broken hydrant was never recovered. I told the dispatcher to never send me out again. I was a draftsman, not a field worker. Fughetaboutit.

That doesn’t sound fun! Luckily here is Washington we have dry barrel hydrants so when they get hit we don’t get a geyser!

Yep, some of the water and gas valves including both services and mains do sometimes get buried under asphalt or concrete. Heck even a tracer wire wrapped around some gas meters get buried after they redo the pavement.

If you hit a hydrant here it just breaks off and effs your car up cause the valve is under the frost line

There are two different styles of hydrants-wet barrel hydrants and dry barrel hydrants. Most places have dry barrel which means there isn’t any water in the stem of the hydrant. There is a foot valve that opens as you spin the operating but on top.
