Eric, watching this vid while drinking coffee and eating my pancakes, sure goes good together. The way you made that board look real western looking, like something out of the old west. I really enjoy watching and learning the methods you use to make these boards come alive from nothing too authentic. All I can say is WOW...
Thank you so much for the nice comments. So glad you found us and you're enjoying what we do. Please let me know if you have any questions I can answer for you eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thanks again, Eric
Mr. Eric, I am so glad you don't work offshore! That angle grinder didn't have a guard on it! lol. TY you for the videos again. getting off of this rig tomorrow, can't wait to get home and start making my first sign!
Thank you, so glad you found us and our videos are helping. Please email me if you have any specific questions I can help with. eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thanks again for watching.
Been waiting on new videos. Rustic look looks good. I saw someone on E-bay had a wood bark looking sign. thought that looked real good too. Merry Christmas to you all and all the readers
Merry Christmas, Guys!! I really love this idea. I have made a few signs that look old, but they were not carved. I am working on one now where, if you add vinegar and steel wool together and put on the board, the wood actually turns gray, I just used the fence boards and it looks great. Good to hear from you again.
Hi Lois, good to hear from you. Merry Christmas. Getting some great feedback on this video. So many talented people with great ideas out there. I got to try your idea with the vinegar & steel wool. That sounds cool. Thank you again, Eric
Hi, Eric, thanks for the great videos from you and your Dad. They are really enjoyable! In this video, you show a sign for the Carters at 60 seconds, and I wonder how you achieved the different tones in the wood. None of my signs have displayed this type of coloring. Thanks in advance.
dkerns2 Thank you for the nice comments. Glad we could help. That carter's sign already had the blonde steak at the bottom. It's was made from redwood. One of the characteristics of redwood is sometime it has these blonde streaks. I'd like to take credit for it, but it was God that colored the board for me before I started. Thank you again, Eric
I love old looking wood and I am among those who love the beat up look to make it look old....I use rough wood use vinegar and steel wool mix (after 24 hours) two coats then dry brush with white paint...we laugh and say the only way we could make it look better is kick it around the dirty barn...lol I was trying to share a picture (couldn’t figure it out)...but what I described takes white pine to looking like old barn wood....the trend is about the old farmhouse look popularly used by the show with Chip and Joanna Gaines ...called Fixer Upper.
Hi Kimberly, yes that is really popular right now. You can send me pictures directly to my email eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you for watching and the input, Eric
Ha! There's no accounting for taste, is there? I used to distress boards for my Mom to oil paint by grazing them randomly with a propane torch, sanding it down to taste. I also put liquid plumber on pine (it turn bright yellow at first) let it sit overnight and wax it with Briwax light brown. It looks 150 years old. I hope to add some ideas to offset all you've done for me. Thanks again.
Yea just not really my thing but now I'm curious about the liquid plumber idea. Might have to give that a try. Thank you for the comment, & you're welcome. Merry Christmas, Eric
You don't talk about the pad that you put on your bench so your work piece won't slide around. could you do one about it . The name of it . How much it cost . And where can we get one. Thanks
I so sorry it's taken so long to get back to you on this. This new youtube comments format is kind of confusing. The pad we use is available at walmart & really lots of stores. It's called many things put it the non skid rubber that is used sometimes as shelf liner. It comes in rolls & is very inexpensive. They have a thicker version that is used in drawer liners for tool boxes. I found that at Lowes. Hope this helps, Eric
So you have learned a valuable lesson... that the signs are for the customers - not for you! I say valuable because I bet you could charge a premium for these... especially because they are custom made for the customer. Take it a step further and offer real bullet holes. If the bullets don't exit out the back, leave them in. Try it and see how fast it sells.... I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the video!
You're making the sign for the customer not for yourself so you gotta do it their way! Like making a sign with an opposing sports team from your favorite but it for them not you.

Y'all have a VERY Merry Christmas. Love the fact you showed your "indiscriminate / artistic" side! haha. Go hard or go home when it comes to "ART".

Great video as always.
I am a Merry Christmas guy also ..........Merry Christmas Boys ......
I can get some White and Red Oak is that good for carving signs and will the wood make the Drill Bits dull very easy.
It carves good but it will dull the bits faster than softwoods.
Any more videos coming out soon?
Question ... do you do the distressing first before the carving of the sign or after
I normally do it after the carving is done.
Who is the guy mentioned in the video, Dan's Custom Signs? Does he have a RUclips channel as well?
+Jonathan Tullock Sorry Johnathan, I really don't know for sure but I don't think so.

That's correct John, well said
