You should do a video about brussel sprouts, a lot of times i get little baby worms in there but it still freaks me out. Maybe a video about how to pick them and how to wash and cook them :)
I usually fill the sink and throw everything in and I use apple cider vinegar. Not sure if it's better but that's what mom always did. It is more expensive but I'm sure it does the same. I have never been sick so I guess it works or I have been lucky as heck...lol.

I just use a water/vinegar mixture for my cleaning. The bugs that are in the vegetables die in the mixture, so the salt seems superfluous, in my opinion, but it couldn't hurt, I guess. :) Unless maybe that it draws water from the vegetables due to osmosis.

I am in LOVE with this moment because I first discovered YourProduceGuy today. Woo HOOOOO :-D !!! Sent my cousins kid out to SPIN collards. He dropped everything on the ground, picked it up as if nothing happened. Luckily we saw the ants he picked up on the moist leaves and washed again. Suggest using a nut milk bag with a drawstring for the air spin method or employ a less ornery child.

Thank you sooooo much for these recipes! I usually just wash or soak in the sink with vinegar water. My store bought strawberries will last a very, very long time (if they aren't eaten first) this way. I've had them to still be fine for almost 2 weeks. I top them and soak in the sink with just vinegar water, allow to dry and put in a container of sorts...hope this helps someone :)

I am a high school student, conducting an experiment on the effects of varying amounts of natural preservatives on fruit. Would the solution work with those as well, or is there a different one that I could use? Any help would be appreciate. Thank you.
Good point with the knife carrying the bacteria or pesticide into the fruit.
I like the leafy vegetable wash that is the one I always have trouble with.

Thanks for the recipe. How long did your spray bottle last? I'm pretty sure the vinegar and lemon juice will corrode the mechanism in the spray top. I'm sure rinsing will wash away any corrosion that gets on the produce. Gonna use it anyway, they're only a buck at the dollar store. LOL
Baking soda is basic.. so if u mix it with other acidic things then it will be neutralized and its of no use.
Better..
First wash with baking soda..
don't rinse
Then pour ur acidic mix on them
I think adding them separately would be better as well. Two separate bottles, perhaps.

I don't understand the purpose of adding baking soda to vinegar like this. Once the bubbling stops, all of the carbon dioxide has been released and there is no more carbonic acid left. All that remains is a weak sodium acetate solution, which as far as I know has no cleaning properties.
I did. Now I watched it twice and I still didn't see him say how long the spray bottle solution lasts or if you need to keep it in the fridge.
This makes alot of sense to me as people want to get rid of pesticides and parasites and it looks like your mix has ingredients that will do both.
The baking soda and vinegar reaction creates CO2 but also sodium acetate. After the reaction you'll either have have a solution of acetic acid (vinegar), lemon juice, and sodium acetate.

What are the measurements? What is happening with the wash? Would it be better to have a baking soda bottle and a separate vinegar and lemon water bottle? Thanks for the video.

How long will a bottle of this last? What I mean is, if it's sitting around unused, does it go bad after a period of time? If so, how long before you should throw it out and make a new batch?

I'm not entirely sure. Personally, I use just wash my vegetables with water and sometimes white vinegar. I suppose the idea was to provide another line of defense if you're worried about harmful bacteria? I'm curious if the commercial product uses it. Regardless, I would agree it's not necessary. I've worked in commercial restaurants and the standard practice was a simple vinegar and salt wash.
i would keep the bottle in the refrigerator to keep it fresh

I keep a small bottle of white vinegar next to the kitchen sink, and one in the bathroom all the time. I buy the ones from the dollar store, I just insert a sprayer to from a spray bottle or any clean sprayer top. I use full strength vinegar for so many things, I hate the soap taste on glasses, so I always give a good rinse, then give a quick spray with the vinegar. I always spray my hands just to make sure the soap is off of them when I put my hands in food, sometimes the smell of the soap stays on my hands, it also cleans them too, removes that garlic, onion smell. I notice the wax on the cucumbers, will that mix, remove the wax? I really don't like that. So if we use this spray we do have to buy organic? I buy organic potatoes, I read they are sprayed twice with bad stuff, so they won't sprout while they are stored. I have to say, you look like the nicest produce man anyone would want to see in our stores. Thanks
You probably won’t see my comment, but maybe others might. If you can afford it, then organic food is definitely still better for you (and yes wash it still). Pesticides are in the soil itself in addition to the plants being sprayed for non-organic plants. The plants soak that up through their roots, so you are still consuming pesticides even if you thoroughly wash the fruit/vegetable exterior. It’s really crap how you need to be financially well off in order to eat healthy. Organic food is just unaffordable for me. : /
And what are the benefits of Sodium Acetate over just using plain vinegar or lemon juice to wash produce?

Wax is common on cucumbers and squashes in the USA :( Unfortunately.
Excuse me, but could you please go ask your son or daughter what maybe in 6 or 7th grade what happens when you mix a base and an acid together?

eating a few bugs isn't going to kill anybody, but spending 30 minutes to clean a salad very well could. ..I don't understand, why not just use the spray concoction (which I like, thank you) on ALL of the produce?
But what about city water chemicals and/or well water runoffs that your final wash get subject to?
BarbaraL Lowell You are cleaning it of mostly parasites and insects not sterilizing it, no matter how you wash them there's going to be some contaminantes, however it's still better than nothing :)

The question is, what do you want to achieve by this kind of cleaning? If it's washing dirt off and some smut then you are perfectly fine, including the removal of critters. However, it is true that by cutting a fruit bacteria on the outside now enter the inside, but the claim on E-Colli removal is incorrect. Pathogenic bacteria have a different character ;)
There are many hands touching and examining fruits and vegetables while they are at the market. Not to mention what happens on the way to the market. I hope no one is using just plain water to wash their fruit and vegetables

Don't use dish soap. Make your own all natural wash. If your going to eat soap, don't bother washing them. Lol.

You just washed those vegetables with the sugars that were remaining from the lemon juice. No acids were present in that wash solution you made. I'm sorry but you neutralize them once you introduce the base to the solution. I don't want to be right. I'm just trying to explain what happened. I'm amazed that people are permitted a driver's license that don't understand simple things like this. For goodness sakes, you stood there and watched the two cancel one other out releasing carbon dioxide. What did you think was happening? Again, I don't want to be right. I'm just trying to explain to you what actually happened in that room.
