    Stephen Payne is a true ocean liner architect. He took lessons from maritime history and incorporated a cruiser stern just like the original QM had (AND the Queen Elizabeth...and many others). I was onboard the original QM in April of 2007 when the QM2 sailed into the port of Long Beach and the QM blew it's steam horns on air power in salute. Being a maritime historian myself it was a truly beautiful moment.

    Let's not say "the last liner". I don't believe there won't be more ocean liners. For some it's just fun and relaxation, but for the aerophobe it's a great way to overcome the ocean.
    Moreover, I watched a video about 10 cruise ships vs 10 powerful waves.
    As a result, one large liner almost capsized, another liner began to sway violently and people began to fall to the floor. There was also a liner where people were sitting having lunch, but a wave broke the window and scattering people and furniture across the floor.
    When people realize that ocean liners are better, they will start building them? I guess so, right? I just don’t see the point in building ships like the Symphony of the Seas and the Icon of the Seas. Another cruise ship? But... why? Probably so that they could not go out into the open ocean, but were spinning inside the Mediterranean Sea or somewhere else?

    • @ChrisFrameOfficial
      @ChrisFrameOfficial  9 месяцев назад +3

      Hey Fred & Tonya. Great to hear from you. I also hope that there will be a workable business case to replace QM2 with another liner when she ends her service career. There’s clearly a demand for the transatlantic crossings but I’m also cautious as a unique set of circumstances came together to see QM2 built in the first place so a replacement isn’t a guarantee. Fortunately she’s a strong ship, well built and only really approaching her mid life now, so we have a while until we need to get worried ☺️

    To me she is only a cruise ship. Last liner to enter regular service on the Ocean was the RMS 'Queen Elizabeth 2', that ship from Glasgow (Clydebank) eleven years younger than me. The new 'Mary' is something quite different from her famous predecessors. On the other hand, what a marvelous successor to one of the World's most famous liners, the former QM, or Job 534, that Grand Old Lady from Clydebank, 'sung' in poetry still before launching!

    • @Andrew-ep4kw
      @Andrew-ep4kw Год назад +18

      She is an ocean liner, meaning she's designed to provide reliable trans-Atlantic service regardless of the weather. To accomplish that, she is fast, 30 knots compared to 23 knots for most cruise ships. Second, she is strong. We've ridden her in pretty rough weather and she never shuddered or rattled like cruise ships; she felt absolutely solid. Those two properties enable her to maintain 23 knots through all but the worst weather, and to travel at 30 knots to make up time if she does have to slow down. No cruise ship can do that.

    • @TsaGo_1912
      @TsaGo_1912 Год назад +10

      The Queen Mary 2 is an Ocean liner in every way. She is completely different to cruise ships. She is built to withstand bad weather on the Atlantic and she still makes regular Transatlantic Crossings, like a true Ocean liner.
      Only someone with no knowledge about her could call her "Cruise ship". This is just wrong.
      And most important thing: The transatlantic crossings are not only for fun: There are plenty of people using the QM2, because they have a dog or any other reason, why they don't like to fly. So the ship also has a purpose.

    • @rrice1705

But where exactly are you getting your definition that a ocean liner is built to handle the rough Atlantic Southampton to New York. Cus there’s other oceans And other routes and there’s been plenty of ocean liners that never got to see Southampton or New York.

      @@deananthony1000 I never heard, that Cunard called all their ships Ocean liners. QE and QV are obviously Cruise ships. I just visited the website of Cunard right now and the QM2 is the only ship which the call an Ocean liner.
      Where do I get the definition of Ocean liner? Have you ever heard of the "internet"?
      You could simply search for the definition of Ocean liners..
      And if that's not enough for you, there are plenty of maritime history channels on RUclips (for example Chris Frame). They also tell you the difference between Cruise ships and Ocean liners. (Or you could also read a book). And of course there are other Oceans and a ship isn't built for only one passage. But the route from Southampton to New York is the most famous route. In this route the history of Ocean liners started in 1840 (with the RMS Britannia from Cunard, which was the first ship that did scheduled Transatlantic Crossings and was the first Ocean liner).

    whats the difference between an ocean liner v. a cruise line?

    • @Bonadio2009
      @Bonadio2009 Год назад +14

      Substantial. There are three major differences between them. First, the structure. The ocean liner is much stronger, rugged and reliable. It also has a longer life expectancy, maybe 40-50 years of SERVICE.
      Second, the schedule. The ocean liner is like a bus. It WILL sail with or without certain booking completeness. The liner has a fixed and permanent itinerary. Regardless the weather conditions. The liner Aways has a fixed start and destination.
      Third, its Purpose. The liner is a more serious, travel shuttle vessel. The cruise ship is primarily recreative, full of ludic or playful attractions, and often with no exact routes nor seaports.
      Edit: nevertheless, a cruise ship can and do cross the Atlantic. Oasis and Symphony of the Seas (owned both by Royal Caribbean), and Costa class ships, owned by Costa Crociere of Italy do that often.

      A ocean liner is a form of transport to get passengers from one side of ocean to the other. A cruise ship is for a holiday and you tend to get off at the same place you got on. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with how it’s built. It’s all down to how it’s used. Cruise ships have evolved while Mary was built in the traditional style so she can handle bigger seas and rougher waves. Or rather she will suffer less damage and need fewer repairs after a rough crossing. There is no definitive definition of difference between cruise ship and ocean liner apart from how it’s used. Lots will want to argue with me but those are the ones that would of been screaming at me that cruise ships are covered in balconies while ocean liners only have a few and they set back and situated where they won’t be affected by waves before mary was built.

    By the way: does the QM2 cross the Atlantic on the regular basis, as did her predecessors? Possible entering docks or basins without assistance of tugs is obvious, but can people travel on her in old style?

      yup she still regularly does trans-atlantic crossings. And she has bow thrusters that help her manoeuver in port.

      She is the famous Stockholm that rammed the Andrea Doria in 1956. Interesting enough may be, that she later served under the flag of the... GDR (East Germany) as mv. 'Voelkerfreundschaft' (Friendship of peoples) and under that name paid 100 visits to our Gdynia!

    Luckily, Marco Polo was scrapped in 2021. Those old ships are incredible hostile for our climate and ugly as hell. The newer ships from Virgin and Royal Caribbean look much, much better and are cleaner. I hope for a world in which ships don’t get older than 15 years, because then they start to get outdated and not bearable for nature.
