St Paul Sandwiches brings back so many memories! Bing Lau's Chop Suey in North St. Louis was one of the first restaurants that sold these sandwiches as well as egg foo young back in the early 1970's. Anyone remember that place. Please comment if you do!!

Egg Foo Young... haven't heard that dish name in years. It was one of this concoctions that I used to see in Chinese restaurants way back when. It always seemed to me like a dish that Chinese cooks made to appeal to American tastes, before American tastes became more global. I guess the St. Paul sandwich is another adaptation, Americanized even further. If it tastes good, who cares.

@@GaelinW yes, of course it's an American 'adaptatiin'. It's a sandwich on white bread 😊

When I was a kid, my mom would make quiche and I couldn't eat it. It would make me gag and it always smelled so good, but the taste was just awful. After I grew up, and not having been forced to eat quiche in a while, I made some. It was wonderfully delicious! I called my mom to apologize for not eating hers and she asked how I made it. I told her and she said, "What about onion?" I said I don't like onion so I didn't put any in. That was the day I found out that I can't do eggs with onions. Also ham. I don't like eggs and ham, normal colored or green.
This looks awesome. Someday I will make it without the onions and ham.

I agree that might be a good idea… though it would not be a "traditional" St Paul… I have also made them with whole Wheat bread which is also not traditional… I suspect the sandwich is too soft for anything hard grilled… so I would do it lightly… just my 2 cents… I ate these all the time in St. Louis… almost always they are served on Wonder Bread… go figure… but perhaps there is a reason.. .

    • @freddsims648

The white bread absorbs the juices better than toasted bread and gives it a different texture and taste than with a toasted bread. Also, the more flimsy white bread somewhat molds itself around the egg portion.

St Louis = St. Paul sandwiches, toasted ravioli, Imo's pizza and St Louis BBQ ribs.
Had 1st St Paul in the late 60s.😋 Always amused the "classic" uses white Wonder Bread! So Chinese 😂
In the late 70s there was a great little restaurant next door so I had St Paul Sandwiches almost every day. They were really inexpensive too so I could afford that.
I haven't found anywhere yet that makes Toasted ravioli or Imo's pizza like they're made in St Louis. Anywhere else they're just poor imitation. I haven't seen St Paul Sandwiches anywhere but St Louis.
Btw, it was "cooked up" in the 1940s in St Louis city.

The sandwich looks good, but I don't eat ham. Growing up I didn't really like eggs in my Chinese food. However, I would order shrimp fried rice with broccoli 🥦.

I’m a vegetarian and eat the sandwich often. It is still tasty without the meat. Give it a try.

Yes!! I hate awful, zero flavor 'hothouse, mealy' 🍅 tomatoes. ❌
I was shocked 2 days ago, had a Rally's regular hamburger, & there sat two garden, REALLY GOOD RED roma tomato slices!
      I thought, WOW! 😋
