To do this movie, they asked collaboration with Toei studios (I think...) and brought to New Zealand the best of the best scenarists, actors and extras from Japan, due to the fact that they were experts on doing these kind of movies with samurais, and producers respected the culture of Japan, until to these days, The Last Samurai is still one of the most popular movies in Japan!

What's interesting is that, historically, Omura was right when he said "If we are whores, the samurai made us that way." The Satsuma Rebellion, which this movie is loosely based on, was a reactionary revolt against the Meiji Restoration, which had removed the Shogunate from political power and modernized the Japanese government. The Shogunate had sealed Japan off from the world, and in doing so, had left the country technologically and economically disadvantaged. The modernized government embraced ideals that abolished the caste system, which effectively destroyed the wealth of many samurai leaders.

    • @G1NZOU

True it's a very complex situation. Of course foreign powers want to move in and jostle for exclusive rights to the new market if Japan opens up, but the Samurai class also wanted to maintain that monopoly on power and wealth, a similar but less extreme thing happened in Europe when the merchant class started rivalling the landowner gentry in wealth and influence.

The music is by Hans Zimmer, who also scored Gladiator (2000). The cinematography is by John Toll, who also shot Braveheart (1995). The direction is by Edward Zwick, who also made Glory (1989). This film has been compared to Dances with Wolves (1990) due to having similar concepts. I recommend all of these films along w/ The Patriot (2000), starring Mel Gibson. Stick to the theatrical versions for all of them.

This film is fantastic, I definitely think it’s Tom Cruise’s best. Also Ken Watanabe really shines in this film, Hans Zimmer’s score is absolute perfection and the story is really moving. And since the word “samurai” is the same in singular and plural form, I love that title can refer to a single warrior or to the whole group of warriors who fought to the end. Great reaction!

This movie is based on real events; the end of the age of the samurai. There was a rebellion The Satsuma rebellion, that lasted a couple of years I think it’s been awhile since I’ve actually looked into this. There was no Aldren character like in this movie well there was he was Dutch I believe; the final battle took place at Shiroyama castle in the Satsuma province in southern Japan. The samurai were outnumbered 60 to 1 and facing the Imperial Japanese army newly equipped with western Arms. The samurai were 300 souls strong at the end of the rebellion, facing nearly 18,000 Imperial troops. It is one of the most famous last stands in history in the end only 50 samurai survived till the end (the leader didn’t and was rumoured to have been assisted in suicide; and was never found) and then they charged to their deaths not a single samurai lived beyond the rebellion.
However in the aftermath the Meiji Emperor realised he had lost a great legacy and initiated a revival of some of the traditions of the samurai; which is why the Imperial Japanese Army Navy and Air Force used samurai swords later on in ww2 especially if they had ties to samurai clans.
If you’d like to find out some more information on your own time have a look at the Sabaton song ‘Shiroyama’ and their Sabaton history channel episode of the same name. And if you’re really interested you can look at a in AMV paired with this movies footage. I highly recommend the historical portion of this.

18:45 I think you got it, Katsumoto says later "She is honoured", because it's more about the double meaning of her receiving honour from being asked to take care of him, rather than talking about her being grateful. To be asked to be someone's second during Seppuku is a big responsibility cause you don't want to mess it up and prolong their suffering, so there's a lot of prestige and trust that goes along with it, even if they're your enemy.

This movie was so great to watch and confusing as the title seemed to have pissed a lot of people off.
The only thing I was confused with is that the movie clearly is set up in the Meiji period, where westernization was under process in japan. What confuses me is that the samurai's fought with no guns.
The old tradition they say. In the Sengoku era, which I believe was around the late 1490s to the early 1610s, when the Portuguese created trade routes to Japan in the early 1610s, the lords of Japan accepted the tradesman of Europe had offered. Matchlock rifles, or as they call it "Tanegashima".
And even after the Sengoku era, the samurai still kept and used the Tanegashima in their fights. Their use of the Yami (Bows) was mostly used in training.

Yea they definitely fudged with history for the sake of creating tension/drama. As i understand it, the actual samurai upon which Katsumoto was based never even won a battle. When Tom and Ken first speak to each other and he explains that he was honored to cut off the General's head, it's because a Samurai is shamed if defeated, and to regain honor, they commit Seppuku. A samurai can request a Second which follows up to decapitate the Samurai. The point is to not scream or cry during Seppuku. It isn't about being defeated by a warrior, at least I don't think. It's about retaining honor during ritual suicide, but to be fair it might have to do with both.

Katsumoto's last word is a continuation of the haiku he wrote while looking at the cherry blossoms. In Japan, there is a feeling that the way cherry blossoms are scattered is beautiful. Japanese love cherry blossoms. Please come to Japan if you have the opportunity. Even if you drop your wallet, it will come back with a high probability in Japan. This is because the word "Otendou-sama is watching" is pervasive.
    Love from Japan.

You should react to Dolores Claiborne starring Kathy Bates. It’s a Stephen King adaptation and considered one of the best alongside Shawshank.

I love this movie in learning about the Japanese culture from the samurai period in the same way that Dancing w/Wolves gave us a similar perspective w/the Native American culture. Respect for all cultures! ✌🏼

Love your reactions man! Just to let you know, when they say savages etc. It's not like how it would sound today. Remember it's a totally different era where someone who wasn't like you in this case White, you were less than.
The Greeks did this calling non Greeks barbarians, the Romans same thing, the Egyptians with the Hebrews etc etc. Not defending it, just looking at it with a different view other than "that's mean!" Which a lot of people do. Yes that's wrong of course, but it still happens today. I'm Arab and there's literally an attack on "village savage's" happening in my country rn. So yeah since the dawn of time we've always thought we were better than another race when in fact no one on earth is.

Hey James! I don't know if you'll ever read this comment but just as a note regarding alcoholism and withdrawal: people can actually DIE from it (mainly from a condition called delirium tremens) and/or suffer from important brain damage that'd be mostly linked to the induced dehydration and lack in some vitamins, as B1. Depending on the amount of daily alcoholic consumption and the duration of the addiction, those symptoms can be more or less intense, but you're right when saying they're never "okay". The critical phases, that can lead to hallucinations, coma..., are the ones we do our best to prevent as healthcare workers, but they can last from some hours to several days. Anyways, all of that to say that alcohol withdrawal in a context of chronic consumption can be deadly! Please don't hesitate to refer to your local alcoholism (and other addictions) societies/safe spaces/charities... for more information and, or help if any of you out there ever needs any.
    Have a nice day :)

I was specifically looking for a comment on this. I believe he was confusing it with opioid withdrawal, and I was looking to see if someone corrected them on that since they talked about it.

"Alcohol and benzo withdrawal" was definitely the worst for me personally out of any other substance. One of the worst experiences in general, in my life... Can definitely last a lot longer than some might think, unfortunately... The place I went to didn't even "really know" how to taper/wean someone off. At least not me. I definitely had one of the worst cases... seizures, all of it etc... It actually is up there (if not worse for me) than being in a shooting and thinking me and my family were gonna die, which can say a lot...

The conscripts if trained daily under stress they could possibly get off more than one shot but due to they had little time along side their Japanese citizens and local who feared the samurai. It's the reason why they broken so easily compared to the Imperial Japanese army who were more trained than the levies and given more modern rifles
Aw man I wanted to see the reaction of yall when they rode through the shrine gate thing and the music
