Hans Zimmer won an Oscar for The Lion King score. His breakthrough was years before this film. But in my humble opinion this is his best work.

@@whitenoisereacts It’s totally understandable. Gladiator capitalized on that success and catapulted Hans Zimmer. He became a mainstream household name after Gladiator. I remember hearing his songs with Enya everywhere. Even my parents bought the Gladiator soundtrack lol.

I find it interesting that Klaus Badelt was the composer of Pirates of the Carribean and Hans Zimmer produced it and parts of the Gladiator soundtrack sounds exactly like POTC.
My favorite part is at the end, when Lucilla (the Emperor's daughter) says "He was a hero of rome, who will carry him." And little Lucius is the first to step forward, even though he's too small to do so.

They did use dogs in battle but they were mastiffs. Also an interesting fact is when a dog unit was utilized the Romans rubbed mint leaves on themselves because the dogs were trained not to attack anyone with that scent.
In the middle ages the mastiffs were used to pull knights off their horses.
Dogs have been fighting and hunting by our sides for thousands of years.

Hey you guys another totally amazing and bad ass thing the Romans did… the colosseum was built with the perfect mathematical equations to have the announcer be heard around the whole colosseum!!! If you listen carefully the asshole with the fake red wig when he is talking before the battles you can hear him echo… and they also had a way to flood the colosseum floor to do ship battles and then drain the water out!!!!! Crazy cool!!
I agree, I think the sister did set up the soldiers to die. Just like she betrayed Maximus(although she didn't want to). Remember, at the beginning when she stated to Maximus, "Do you think me heartless?" And he stated, "I think you have a talent for survival."
Minor clarification. Those were Pratoreon Guard, not regular soldiers. She was working to turn his bodyguards against him.
Oliver Reed who played Proximo, the slave owner actually died during the filming of Gladiator and according to IMDb - "it cost the company $3 million to recreate his face so he could "appear" in the scenes he still had left to shoot."

Did you know that he's only seen two of his own films? He hates seeing himself on the silver screen. He said that “I don’t ever really want to see myself as the camera sees me … I don’t want to watch myself. Of course, there’s a part of you that’s curious for a second, and I have to constantly tell myself, ‘No.’ Because I know it’s not going to be of any value to me, and in fact it stands a greater chance of having a negative effect on future work.”

I think it was probably LA Confidential that really launched Russell Crowe's career. Without that I doubt he'd have been given the lead role in such a big movie.

This guy at 32:11 was also in Braveheart. He was the guy who got married and his wife had to sleep with the British lord on her wedding night. I always notice him due to those distinctive facial scars which are real. He was also in season 3 of Westworld.

If you didn't already know, Tommy Flannigan's scars were result of his being robbed and attacked after leaving a DJ gig at a pub in Glasgow. While recovering in hospital, a friend suggested to make the most of his situation by going into acting. The rest is cinema history.
Watching Russel Crowe win the Oscar for this movie is one of my favorite moments like...ever. He was shocked, which was adorable because he's so amazing in it. And I believe he made up "strength and honor" on set? So good. One of my top 10 favorite films for sure, and a wonderful reaction as always! If y'all haven't seen The Last Samurai, you should consider that one too..... ;)
The Last Samurai is a must see film. Infinitely beautifully shot with such a compelling story. Seriously this movie and Rain Man are the only movies where I like Tom Cruise.

Two other films that Ridley Scott filmed in Morocco that you definitely need to check out: Black Hawk Down and then Kingdom of Heaven (the director's cut o this one, not the butchered theatrical release)
Black Hawk Down is about the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 and features a cast of guys that were either already big stars or would become big stars: Eric Bana, Sam Sheperd, Tom Hardy, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, Tom Sizemore, Ty Burrell, William FIcthner, Nikolaj Coslter-Waldau. (and like Gladiator it was scored by Hans Zimmer)
Kingdom of Heaven is about the Crusades and features Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and, Edward Norton

I've never watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. I keep hearing great things about it though. I'll have to check it out.
@@KellyBeam There are entire plotlines that were cut out, and it makes so much more sense than the theatrical version. If a Ridley Scott film has a director's cut, always watch that version. He knows what he's doing.

Hans Zimmer's score for 'The Last Samurai' is totally epic....and that is a damn good film too
This was the first sword & sandles film since th 60's epics. The CGI element made it possible to create the spectacle again without building full sets.
My favorite film of all time. Story, acting, cast, soundtrack, battles, costumes...This is just perfection ! It's just a shame (and kinda unfair in my opinion) that Zimmer and Phoenix didn't won an Oscar for this film

Likely this has been mentioned already, but if you fellows want another big-budget take on the exact same time in Roman history, look no further than The Fall of the Roman Empire from 1964. Emperor Marcus Aurelius is played by Alec "Obi-wan Kenobi" Guinness, Commodus by Christopher Plummer, and Lucilla by Sophia Loren. (If you've never before beheld Mme. Loren in action, after this you won't want to stop. Ever.) 😎

@UThink UCan they may not have been in many films around that time but they were still famous. Being famous has nothing to do with recency.
I agree huge stars.. Man I loved Oliver Reed ( Hannibal)& Richard Harris ( man called horse) just 2 movies I grew up with RIP ..oh and of course love Russell and Joaquin.👍✌️
It does always grate on me slightly when I hear younger people saying a film looks great "for 2000" or whenever it came out, as if great-looking films were a new phenomenon. 2000 wasn't that long ago in the history of film. Watch Ridley Scott's Blade Runner from 1982...it's still one of the most beautiful films ever shot. Talent knows no era. By the way, there's plenty of green screen in this film...you think they built that entire Coliseum? Composite photography of one sort or another has been around practically since film began.
Lol I agree...after all a great looking film doesn't make the movie good...look at how awful The Last Jedi is even though it looked pretty.
Heck, look at some Charlie Chaplin flicks. He did a _lot_ of stunts, but locations were often added in.

@@missjillmars yeah, I think the word that describes 4 and 5 best is: unnecessary. 1-3 is a very solid trilogy with a nice ending.
The soundtack is amazing - and that's a fact. The track "Earth" is propobly one of my favourites.
Master and Commander: Far Side of the World is another great Russell Crowe movie!
If you want another recommendation from around the same time, you should watch The Mummy (the 1999 version with Brendan Fraser). It's a really fun action movie, if you want a change of pace from the serious epic films.
The first two are a really fun ride after that not so much.

Good movie..the Romans actually were defeated in the Germanic forests ..one of thier worst defeats in thier history..and eventually were sacked by Germanic tribes who settled there..the Romans were the most powerful when they controlled less places around them but the whole system collapsed because of over expansion and corruption of power.
If you want to watch Ridley Scott's spiritual successor to this film, it's Kingdom of Heaven, about the period between the 2nd and 3rd Crusade. Just make sure you watch the director's cut. It's a beautiful film.
The most epic film I've probably ever watched. The score, the script and ever single actor including the side characters were excellent. I have admired Joaquin's acting in many movies but this was honestly his best performance for me. He was far more complex and menacing in this than as the Joker.
The soundtrack with the woman singing always gets me in my feels haha
So Maximus had lands in Southwest Spain (hence the ‘Spaniard’ nickname).
The first time I've ever noticed this but at the start when the headless Roman guy comes back to the Roman lines and Maximus is going past the troops "blood and honour" etc, the background chant by the Barbarians is actually the Zulu chant from the 1964 movie "Zulu"

I remember this playing on loop on TBS a few years ago, must have watched it three times in a row- awesome movie, one of my all time favorites.
I always felt Comedus represented the corruption of Rome that let to it's eventual fall. Maximus represented the old ideals that built Rome to its glory at that time. This story was a sort of clashing of the two.
For me, that's Hans Zimmer's best Score for a motion picture. It brings the mistery, the pain and the strengh of the story. Absolutly amazing piece "Now we're free" with Lisa Gerard.
The movie that really launched Hans Zimmer was The Lion King (94). But this is also one of his best, for sure. The Thin Red Line also has a few themes that rank in my favorite movie themes period, in case anyone knows the details, "Jisas Yu Holem Hand Blong Mi" the orchestral version in particular. Soothes my soul, everytime ^-^
Personally, I think it's a bit of a shame how Zimmer has changed his style over the years. The mid 90s to early 2000s were really his prime I feel.
And to think Mel Gibson turned down the Maximus role, this is probably the best acting from Russell Crowe that I’ve seen. And yes, the soundtrack was amazing! (RIP Richard Harris & Oliver Reed❤)

If you guys really want a good Gladiator series. May I recommend Spartacus Blood and Sand. It’s a beautiful series, and I’d love to see you watch it - plus it’s somewhat more accurate to how gladiators actually worked - tho Hollywood and TV series like to play it up compared to the actual history

His home was in Spain and they said in the middle of the night "ride until dawn" on a winters day in Germany, that would probably mean something until 7:30 am. If they rode north with him and sent out that squad to his spanish home at the same time, they could've had a head start of up to 15 hours.

Commodus 31 August 161 - 31 December 192 was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 to 192. He served jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until the latter's death in 180, and thereafter he reigned alone until his assassination. His reign is commonly thought as marking the end of a golden age of peace and prosperity in the history of the Roman Empire the Pax Romana. Commodus accompanied his father during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176. The following year he became the youngest emperor and consul up to that point, at the age of 16. During his solo reign, the Roman Empire enjoyed reduced military conflict compared with the reign of Marcus Aurelius. 48:19 That's really not how that works, it isn't always hereditary and when it is it's not the whole family that will have that.
Maximus state was in Hispania. He is then taken to north Africa by the caravan. So he actually run all the way from Germania to Southern Spain (most likely since it was the most romanized area of the Empire and where soldiers who had fought well were given land to retire).
He could have lived anywhere close to the Mediterranean sea. Where I live (Lleida, in the north-east of Spain) there’re vineyards.

@@judiit09 Baetica (andalucía) and Extremadura region where the most populated areas (and the wealthier) in Hispania at the time and judging by Maximus status, wealth and the landscape of its state I think its rather one of those two. Those style of Mansions where seen commonly in those regions at that time. Baetica and the nearby regions of Emerita Augusta have among the largest and most luxurious homes in Hispania.
@@Alejojojo6 Tarraco was one of the most important Roman cities in Hispania and there were pleny of villae across Hispania (even in the north, in current Galicia or Navarra). I’m not saying you’re wrong, but there’s not enough evidence in the movie to know in which part of Spain Maximus lived.
"What is it in me you hate so much?" The phrase that proved his mental situation if anyone wasn't sure before that.... i'm not sure if his father was right but he loved him and i think that he was protecting Rome and him too by not choosing him for the role of the next emperor. He wouldn't succed for many reasons he wasn't able to lead, he wasn't a good fighter and most important he wasn't a stable personality. It may be worst if he became the emperor with his father blesses.
The pitch drop makes Russel Crowe sound like Chris Hemsworth.

I still cant believe that was the entertainment of the day Gladiators really were the celebrities of the day. Ridley Scott did an amazing job he deserved the directing oscar that he didnt get. Hans Zimmer is an amazing composer too really got the feel of the movie.
Isn't that much different to today. We still have boxing, mixed martial arts and other bloodsports between humans as well as bullfighting and trophy hunting.
It's slightly more toned down nowadays and more regulated but there's still many similarities between the ancient roman and greek empires and modern western civilisations.

@@katehamilton6934 oh yeah it's a lot better now in terms of having a choice. My point was just to highlight that the attitudes and public support towards that type of violence for entertainment hasn't really gone away, just the sports themselves have adapted for modern times.

Actually Maximus home was in Trujillo, Spain. So it would have been even longer for him there from Germania than to Italy, so thats probably why the Pretorian Guard got there faster.

Fun fact...the Emperor actually did fight in the arena as a gladiator but he was killed in his bathtub , strangled....
A little historical background - Commodus did actually fight in the arena - ofc,he had an advantage,his opponents were drugged,or given defective weapons.As you can guess,he racked up a pretty high body count.
He was eventually assassinated - drugged by his concubine,Marcia,and then strangled to death by a wrestler.His body was then thrown in the Tiber.
Being a Roman emperor was very dangerous - most were either killed in battle,or assassinated.

Crowe was in a lot of films before this movie but he was not an A list star, LA Confidential was the movie that got him attention a few years before as that film won Oscars, but Gladiator put him on the map as an A Lister! Defiantly check out LA Confidential!

@@whitenoisereacts just read up on it. He died on a break from filming, still had a couple of scenes to film so they used a stand in and used some camera trickery. @@ahullabaloo Oliver was an extremely heavy drinker, but he promised the director that wouldn't drink while on set, that he'd stay sober during filming. He managed, but he finally gave in when some British tourists (or sailors?) met Oliver and asked if he wanted to have a drinking contest at a local bar, to which Oliver agreed and he drank and drank an insane amount of alcohol and managed to win the contest, but sadly all of that alcohol gave him a heart attack.
Good performance by Russell, C. . The authenticity of the city is digitally done which takes away the realism. ROMANS WERE BRUTAL. THATS HOW THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL CONCERNING . HISTORY HASN'T CHANGED THAT MUCH UNFORTUNATELY, AND, SADLY.

Guys, 20 years ago wasn't the dark ages. And green screens were used all over the film. The far away backdrops, the crowds in the arena, the works. All green screen, all CGI.
I think his estate was in Spain. Fitting considering the Barca family known for scaring the shit out of the old Rome lived in Spain.
something I heard about the gentleman with facial scars was that they are real. he was attacked coming out of a bar (I think) and had a knife put inside his mouth.
Master and Commander, Russel Crowe is so good in it. Great movie about friendship.
The other big actor in Gladiator, you're probably thinking of Richard Harris.
Harris' son, Jared Harris, is amazingly good as well. He really shone in Chernobyl with Stellan Skarsgaard.
Not sure which big actors you meant besides Richard Harris and Phoenix, but l would add Oliver Reed ( Proximo)to that list. He and Richard were apparently quite the drinking hellraisers in their day.
When Anthony Lane, movie critic for The New Yorker, remarked that Reed had died during filming - he added, "the blood having finally passed from his alcohol-stream." 🙄
