Anyone else find it a bit strange that Americas celebrations are soo much bigger than here?? They should invest BILLIONS into massive celebrations in Connemara, the true Ireland!!
I was actually in that Parade, but unfortunately all the 32 county assocations had to go to the back of that parade and freeze, least it hadn't any Dublin gimicks like that farse of a parade, what has donald bloody duck got to do with being Irish.
Ok, there are many points I can give you on this. Irish people had their land taken from them and this land was then given to British people, many times Scots(why do you think the accent is like it is in the North) most of the settlers were Scots. We had a population of 8.5 mil in 1840. A million died and more emmigrated because the government of Peel were slow to do anything, instead saying the Irish were exaggerating how bad it was. Imagine letting one million just die.
I have my own opinions on the Northern Ireland situation (as an American with Irish born parents) but what I find interesting and predictably sad is the bullshit debates fought over websites...Everyone is a tough guy behind a keyboard...and its sad that so many videos...not just ones relating to Ireland, get twisted into political shouting matches via the strokes of a keyboard...
@ardeestephen100 I'm on my high horse? I think I'm being pretty fair. Sorry to disappoint you but EVERYONE was treated badly in the past. Welsh, English, Scots and Irish. Life was cheap and the 'haves' could pretty much do what they wanted to the 'have nots'. There's nothing special about the way the Irish were treated. Maybe thats why it isn't taught in detail over here. But I get it's your countries history and you want people to be aware of it. Incidently..I am because my Grans from Mayo.
@ardeestephen100 Yeah I'm aware of the history. At the end of the day the famine was a potato blight. The British didn't CAUSE the famine they were just shit at dealing with it. And I'm sure there was an element of political opportunism too. Didn't they get looked after if they converted to church of Ireland? Rome sticking it's oar in eh? Interestingly a large number of Irish emigrated to England! Don't blame them.
What do you want to hear toppaz79? Why would British people say anything about being raped? I don't care about being victims or anything like that. Just a fair crack. We have that now but for centuries we didn't, right up to the economic war and entry into the EU. I've no problem with British people. I have friends from Britain and English cousins. They are surprised when I tell them about our past. They don't get educated. We shud acknowledge the facts and move on, but you can't ignore things
You should come down from your high horse. There is a clear bias and anti British-ness in Irish history that's clear, I've spoken to my English friends about this but even when you read English points of view(the stuff you guys don't learn in school) on Irish history it's a grim picture and you can see why what has happened did happen. The Irish were treated pretty badly in the past and walked all over. English people are arrogant about "The Empire" too...there are other points of view too
Also-- wacIRELAND(dot)org or wearechangeireland (on you tube) great videos. Vote no on the Lisbon treaty, get out of the "big brother" E.U., while you still have some freedom left. UP THE IRISH!
Fantastic...have to go to new york soon and definitely be there for St. Patricks
i was at that--it was really something for an irishman such as myself to behold
lol
LOVE PADDYS... BRING IT ON
I'm of Scottish and German decent, but love the Irish parade!
