This is amazing! I love the amount of thought and research you put into the project, and you are a talented artist as well. I would definitely buy this deck! Also, please don't feel insecure about your art. It's quite good, and it's ok if it isn't perfect. Like the difference between something made by a machine and something made by hand. Imperfections can add character. Every style is unique, and the value you're adding to the deck through your research and love of arthropods is incalculable.
I rolled my eyes when I saw this, because I'm a big ol' bah humbug type of person. Then I actually listened to what you had to say, and this really sounds wonderful and cool. The way you communicated this idea really made me instantly regret my initial skepticism.
Wow!! That is some high praise! Thank you =) - especially for listening despite initial skepticism. It's really hard to fight against our natural biases so it means a lot that you did. I really am truly excited to illustrate these stories and get them out into the world
This is awesome. Yes kickstarter sounds like the way to go. I will keep my eye out for it. I will also go tell my friend about this deck. She loves bugs and this would so excite her. I will definitely back this deck. You work looks beautiful and I to think you are self taught. you should be patting yourself on your back. Job extremely well done. Terri from Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
This is so awesome and makes it me so happy to see stuff like this being put out into the world, especially by you! As and ADHDer also, I’d like to congratulate you on your success. Good job! Your videos are always so uplifting to watch, and I can’t wait to see what interesting things you do next :) Side questions: do you have any idea of a release date yet? I’m actually in love with these cards! Your art is amazing too by the way. Thank you for being so amazing and talented and interesting.
Thanks so much - you're unbelievably kind! I'm hoping to get it launched by the end of the year. In addition to all the cards I'm gonna repaint I need to do logistics ... like - find a printer / manufacturer.
Ive got 2 katydid cards. 1) 5 of pentacles you're looking at her backside. 5 of pents is one of those cards that seems to have a lot of varying interpretations. I've interpreted it as having the tools at your disposal to escape or better your situation, but they might be behind you in a place that you're not looking (her eyes pots on the backsides of her wings). Card also hints at some sort of power imbalance which is why I chose a katydid since they're the hotdogs of the jungle lol The other is the 7 of Pentacles which has a lot of planting and patience symbolism. At some point you can prepare all you want, but you just have to have patience / faith you did a good job at let it germinate. The Spiny devil katydid uses her long ovipositor to lay eggs hidden in dead palm fronds - then she leaves. Her eggs are protected from predators and upon hatching her nymphs are born with spines of their own so they're already protected.
@@SciBugs that's so awesome, Nancy. I had a feeling I'd missed a katydid--oops. :D You've been very gracious with me and my questions. Thank you for that. I appreciate that idea of letting things germinate after some hard work. With classes about to start up again on Monday, I know I've done about all that I can do to get the Canvas shells prepped and ready to go--it's all in the students' hands now. :] I hadn't mentioned before, but my main job is served as a community college professor. Lifeguarding is just a side hustle (like we all have lol).
Hi, thank you for doing this. I am a non-visual person and I learn through listening and reading. Can you recommend some academic and popular science books on bug biology? Do you have reading list in your website or somewhere else?
So exciting! I've been hearing about this project for so long now that I'm really happy to see it finally come to life.
Me too hahaha
Wow listening to your knowledge mixed with the art and symbolism is incredible. This is super special!
Thank you so much!! Really appreciate it =D

Thank you for the pep talk =) one of my 2024 resolutions is "let go of perfectionism" so this is a nice reminder. Thank you 💚
I'm glad to see lampyrids included...
Yas!! They had to be there

I was thinking of adding prints to the kickststarter too =)
That looks really cool! What is the story behind the katydid card? I just really like those ones hehe . . .

I did a series of videos about various bug books. I should update it, but here's a start
