It's really hard to decide when the Haitian Revolution stopped, because it truly goes on forever.

0:38 - Where did Santo Domingo go? In 1795 Spain legally ceded it to the French - legally, because they never truly controlled Santo Domingo at all.

I was half hoping there would be a part three about the period between 1808 and 1820, when Haiti was once again split in two with a northern half governed from Cap-Haïtien and a southern half governed from Port-au-Prince. There's certainly enough interesting (and dark) history in that period, and particularly in the building projects undertaken by King Henri-Cristophe in the north.
I really could go on about Haiti up until the present day. Maybe I will one day, but for now it's time to put Haiti down and cover a few other topics.

I’m noticing the Polish contribution is grossly exaggerated in a lot of recent reviews of the revolution. Only about 300-500 Poles switched sides to fight along side the rebels, while the other thousand or so fought alongside the French or ran away and disappeared. 500 sounds big until you realize nearly 50,000-100,000 rebels were fighting the war. And it wasn’t like the writing was not on the wall; Haitians were going to win and they did not want to be on the wrong side. They’d seen the brutality that Haitians were willing to reciprocate against the French troops that committed atrocity after atrocity against them. It was a nice gesture obviously, and it’s a very touching story, but again, grossly exaggerated.

the 400-500 is the Poles that stayed in Haiti after the war, not the ones that switched sides. I cannot find anything about that number, but it still probably isn't the full 5k

Glad to see you at least mentioned Polish Legions and their switch of sides. Tho its still just a tip of the iceberg of Polish-French and Polish-Haitain relations of that time ;)
EDIT: For example the fact that Haitians spared the lifes of Poles during the genocide and many of their relatives still live in Haiti to this day.

@@TorricRoma apparently some Haitian volunteers were sent but the ottomans massacred them in the first engagement and no further attempts were made to achualy help the Greeks.
I strongly recommend everyone read black jacobins by CLR James, it’s an excellent account of the Haitian Revolution.
And also The Kingdom of This World by Alejo Carpentier it's also a must to read about Haitian revolution.
A fascinating read definitely. Interesting to see how James is borderline obsessed with Toussaint as a leader and an enlightened thinker.

Can you explain the Indonesian revolution? Because the Indonesian revolution was the first independence movement in the 20th century, it was also one of the great wars after World War 2 and was also related to cold war

Wow dude! You are so brave for covering this topic. Most white people love listening to convenient lies that make them feel good about themselves. The US intentionally excludes the Haitian Revolution from it's education curriculum. I respect you so much.
Thank you so for covering the Haitian Revolution. So many people still try to make a mockery of it given Haiti's continuous struggles. But they fail to acknowledge the constant foreign interventions by foreign powers (particularly France and America) that would continuously extort Haiti's people. They were never given a fair chance from the very beginning. The story of Haiti's revolution is tragic not because of the shackled hands that wrote it, but the free hands that tarnished it.

Dessalines is like the Benedict Arnold of Haiti it seems. But, even though betrayal still is kinda cowardly, at least Benedict Arnold had some good reasoning(he didn’t get respect). This man just wants to be on the winning side the entire time
I think you may be conflating Dessalines position. He was freed by Toussaint therefore loyal to him but at the time Dessalines betrayed him, Toussaint was becoming a dictator and enslaver of his own people. Then the French turned out again to have lied and not been much better so he switched again. However, in the end once he held the power, he too used it to control and not to build

My problem with our big cities as an Aussie, is while they are nice, safe places to live... They are very bland when you scratch the surface. There's nothing about them that makes them special. There's no local cuisine or events you couldn't say find done better in San Diego or Miami. I can understand why some people pay a mint to live in coastal California despite all it's problems, practically every city there has several special things about it you cannot easily find anywhere else, but that's not so with Melbs. Unless you have a hard-on for trams and hook turns. I moved to far north Queensland and food and culture wise we have everything they have, but we pay 1/3rd for housing.
I'll confess I'm still yet to travel much, but having recently moved into the Western suburbs I'm really enjoying it. As someone from whoop whoop I can't help but get a hard-on for the trams - and the asian food, lord help me.
Going up to Sunshine Coast next month to visit so I'll hold you to your word when you say they have food just as good, haha!

There is something I do not understand…. If you look at a map, Santo Domingo Island is divided in two countries… Haiti and Republica Dominicana, while according to you, since 1804, there is been only one nation in the island…. How come?

Well they were a small part of a one French expedition which was a small part of European involvement. Not significant in the grand scheme of things. No impact on Haitian or polish culture today.

@@ChevyChase301 Actually imagine a part of a legion (many died of disease), equipped with modern arms, with knowledge of European drill and warfare joining the rebels. To this day there are communities in Haiti that consider themselves Poles. So, no Sir, I do not consider them insignificant.

There were but not in a large enough number to have an influence.
@@robertfaucher3750 Poland gets divided in between Prussia, Russia and Austria. Napoleon fights all of those. Poles join Napoleon's army in hopes of gaining independence. Napoleon sends Poles fighting for independence to quell a rebellion fighting for independence across half the world. What could go wrong?
Why has Hati never improved?
A lot to do with the institutions in place and the fact that it seems to be hit with a crippling storm at least once a decade. Plus, a lot of organizations that are there to try and “help” Haiti are just money laundering schemes that make the problems worse
for internal factors, the country suffered from great political instability due to several rivals who were fighting for power. for the external factors, France thanks to their ship more powerful than Haiti demanded a debt equivalent to 10 years of revenue in Haiti, but unfortunately shortly after the economy of Haiti collapsed and the east of the island took its independence (therefore less revenue). in the meantime to simplify Haiti and the USA have never been friends, the USA has occupied the country, sanctioning the country on several occasions. so all their profit even very little went into the pockets of the USA and France and it took 125 years to pay this debt.
Why were the institutions a problem? Why did the economy fail? Why was Hati occupied so many times?
@@sheldoniusRex the institutions were a problem because Haiti was unstable. This instability came from the power struggles and caused them to be unable to form a government that could bring the country to prosperity.
The economy fell due to a combination of that same instability, natural disasters that consistently affect the island, and crippling occupation by the US and sanctions by the US. Haiti was occupied by the US so that they could gain a base of operations there and harvest the resources. The US was also going through the imperial phase where we expanded our colonies in order to catch up to the Europeans. It’s why we went to war over Cuba, Philippines, and Puerto Rico with the Spanish
