- Vintage Lodge #5 Crud Removal With Easy Off Oven Cleaner
I tried a few Extra Products on this Classic #5 Lodge Cast Iron piece because it was the worst I have acquired thus far, And am Thoroughly convinced that the Dollar General Version would have worked as good as the Easy Off Brand. However, I wanted to show actual Easy Off as a True, GO-TO-Guaranteed-Method for the doubters out there.

I use a wire wheel. It's really fast.
Beautiful job! Is there any risk of destroying your piping under your sink? Ours are PVC and I'm afraid washing all that lye down the sink will damage them.
Lye is what is in draino \ pipe cleaner. Safe to use so long as u flush with water.
how do you open this thing?
Fill the chip with JB Weld....
Do ya think that will work?...I thought about stove pipe compound....then season a layer over that...
@@ManLand JB Weld is used on very hot mufflers and engines. I see no reason why it will not work on the bottom of a skillet. JB Weld is heat resistant. Fill the hole, let set for 24 hours, then season the skillet bottom. That's what I would do.
JB Weld is great stuff!
Awesome!! I love a good solution!
Thank you.
THANK YOU! This is EXACTLY what I need! Can't do the self cleaning oven thing, but I can sure 'nuf try this method!
I've used both Easy-Off and Dollar Store oven cleaners. The Easy-Off is thicker and stickier, and makes less fumes but I'd say the Dollar store brand performs just as well. Get yourself a stainless scouring pad, they come in a two pack, just roll them together like a pair of socks into one big pad, they really peel the crud off once it's softened a bit.
I have the Pads, but prefer the plastic scrubies due to the bad situation I have in my hands...it's old age and they call it arthritis...I say it's overworked fingers and joints...lol. So I let the soda in the cans to do the work as much as possible...I fear in a few short years, I won't even be able to hold them pans...so I'll have to use my teeth...lol.

Maybe you need no protective devices to use easy off that doesn't mean it isn't extremely bad for the environment and helps cause cancer in children. It is so irresponsible to use, the chemicals itself, the propellant in it and every aerosol can and the empties in the land fill. Vinegar or elbow grease works really well.
Thanks for mentioning the bad info put out by Kent Rollins. I like the guy and everything but he gives out bad info when it comes to cleaning cast iron. As you mentioned there's nothing wrong with using lye, it's a natural chemical and cleans off quite easily and completely, he then proceeded to say it was just fine to pitch your skillet into a raging hot fire and let it cook off the gunk.... I know for a fact that doing it that way can warp your pan, not every time of course, but it can happen. The "olden days" methods can be great info to have but it doesn't mean it's always the right way everytime.
Good job on getting it cleaned 👍 I use a self-cleaning oven, just put it in for one cycle 😉
We had a self cleaning oven and now it is no longer witht his new stove, besides it was wayyyy to hot in the house when I did that...lol.

I have a friend that has one so I don't have to worry about the heat in the house......😜 LOL
Who ever owned that was nasty dammm!
Lucky you!
Awesome restoration! Thanks for sharing!
man that's was an awesome how-to video great job...I would have gotten the ole electric sander out lol take care Mart
It was tempting to grind that puppy...lol.

Chip turned out nicely. I thank the problem that I had with the easy off method was that I let it sit too long and it dried out. I will try again soon. I really liked your disclaimer at the beginning. Well said and entertaining.
For some like me that gets a pan every three weeks if I'm lucky, this method works best without having to invest into a lye tank or electrocution methods...lol. Yeah this works well Brother, just use cheap bags "Free" if possible and do this in the heat out of the sun light, it works best.
Thanks for the lesson Mart! I have 2 skillets that I found that I'm going to do this on.
It's a slower process but darn easy on the scrubbing.
I've preached and preached about Easy Off Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner or Lye being OK to use in the restoration of cast iron. The skillet doesn't absorb it, the skillet isn't porous and it is perfectly safe on your cast iron. That said, it isn't recommended that you directly breath the fumes or get it on your skin, unless of course it's you! lol The heat and sun also helps lye work more quickly. Sorry about that chip. I have a BS&R #7 that is cracked and I didn't discover it until I stripped it in my lye tank. It is impossible to see under all that crud and rust. Interesting to see your process! Your pan looks gorgeous! There is no better feeling in the world than looking at a pan you just restored. ;-)
A good video, for those who don't do a lot of restorations. I use a lye soak and electrolysis.
Me is thinking of using electrolysis soon...it will save me some cash and charge my batteries too...lol.
well it sure worked good .sure was in bad shape and looking forward to the next part
atb john
I wonder if I can put one in a toilet bowl and flush it with a car battery...lol

Easy Off cleans a lot of things, the scent or vapor or whatever sometimes brings on asthma for me, though, but it works well! And I use it anyhow! But yes I use a mask just in case. Lye is not toxic tho, Lye used to be in hand soap after all.
I have not been getting notifications for your channel, Manland, I see you have uploaded several times lately and RUclips has not told me. (Thanks a lot YT)
As far as the notifications go... it's always a hit and miss for me too. But I try to catch a few videos when I can...
I have asthma. This winter is making me sick. I did clean the oven door with Dawn Dish soap. This is my first time cleaning an oven!!!
Oh yeah, I remember lye was in soaps and some hair products, wasn't it?
Very well demonstrated cast iron restore. Thank you for doing this video it was very helpful. 👍😃
this video may be a few years old but I'm thankful for it. chips also looks like a🖕
I'll bet ya a year's supply of Crisco, that chip is the result of a .22 Short at about fifty years. 💥
You can let it sit multiple days in the bag, that way you can save money on easy off
That is true...but I am like a kid at Christmas, always taking a peek and a scrub to see how it's going...lol.
ManLand121 Phonanomal video brother how was the wedding. Excellent video of topic of choice for discussion no diggity no doubt
What? When? Where? Who got married???...lol.
Belly button, hahaha! That was a great how to.
Thanks ya muches...I got the lint out of it for sure...lol
@@ManLand hahaha, nice.
I am sensitive because I have asthma and struggling more on very cold windy days!!!
If you have a fireplace put it in there and everything turns to ash. Then rise with white vinegar.
Hey Manly Man! I enjoyed your genuine approach and good sense of humor! 😆
I was so surprised to see your pan look the same as my new pan after you were done. I never seen one cleaned up before your video. I thought it supposed to look crusty!
Thanks to you, I know to keep it looking the way you cleaned it. It is nice to know I have a normal cast iron skillet! I won it Christmas of 2019!
I am going to subscribe and watch your next video, so I can know how to seasoning the cast iron. 😊 Do you have one for cleaning the oven too. I never done it before.
Yo Shorty doesn't mean there's no long term effects of that chemical. Child, what kind of hand do you Have?
Nice job Manland, now get that chip welded professionally.
I tried bubble gum and it just melted away...lol.
@@ManLand 😆
Who used this pan with all that crud on every inch of it though? That was way messed up it’s like they kept cooking and never cleaned or seasoned or did anything else
It is or was really caked on there...must have been a good GAS stove all those years...lol
I never seen one cleaned up before. I thought they came with that texture. Now I know it has never been cleaned off. I am happy to see a clean one look just like mines. I won it during Christmas of 2019. Thanks to the Manly Man, I know I have the real thing.
WOW Good job I am going to try this for sure! You did a awesome job!
No Annie, you are Awesome!
