  • The West Virginia Mine Wars Museum intended to have its grand reopening on May 16, 2020, in correlation with the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Matewan.
Instead, we are marking the Battle of Matewan Centennial virtually with the premier of an unscripted tour around the historic town of Matewan. This tour is guided by the townspeople who have worked tirelessly over the years to preserve this proud working people's history.
Follow us along, and we'll take you around to hidden sites related to the Battle of Matewan and the West Virginia Mine Wars. You'll get to see the Stone Mountain Coal Camp where miners were thrown out of their homes on the morning of May 19, 1920, the site of the gun battle, the 1908 Old Jail & Lock-Up that once served as Sid Hatfield's headquarters, the Matewan Methodist Church, the graves of Sid Hafield and Ed Chambers, and more!

This is a nationally significant historic site that is being preserved by common working folk who cherish their heritage. Thank you for this wonderful tour and for reminding all of us of the battles fought by the gallant United Mine Workers of America against great odds.

The museum is fantastic. We made a trip from Michigan and learned so much about the union history.

Thank you for all the important work you do. America has a really messed up history with labor and sadly very little of it is taught to us. I never heard of Blair Mountain or even the Coal Wars until a few days ago. The site and history need to be preserved. I subscribed, and look forward to visiting the museum next time my fiance and I are in WV. Thank you!!

A truly wonderful tour. I had the privilege of visiting the Mine Wars Museum a few years ago. I am glad to see the community working together to preserve this important part of our state's history.

This is a terrific video on the mine wars and the wonderful Town of Matewan. I had the pleasure of working on that floodwall and the floodwall graphics with my design team at the Corps of Engineers in the 1990's and spent many sessions with former mayor Bob McCoy talking about the town's history and its future. Wonderful people and inspiring history, I fully recommend visiting Matewan and immersing yourself in its history.
