Camp Solidarity Recap
Camp Solidarity is a one-of-a-kind union training event hosted by the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in historic Matewan, West Virginia. This recap video showcases footage from our first Camp Solidarity, where, with the help of the Museum’s team and special guests, we bulked up our skills in building strong unions with engaged membership, and educated ourselves about labor history right on the very street where one of the most significant battles over unionism in the U.S. took place. We are excited to announce that we will be doing it again in 2025. We hope to see you there!

The March to Blair Mountain Anniversary Starts Now!
Never forget, the term "redneck" was invented to smear these people... God bless them always.
Awesome, let us never forget the courage of those WV miners.
Beautiful ❤
That was just plain cool. Thank you.
This is a particular story that needs to be told, especially as the original meanings of certain terms have been lost or distorted over the decades. Including, not just that mentioned in this slice of history, but importantly also, the terms "liberal" and "conservative", which now been nefariously twisted to mean something completely different than they originally meant, and actually do mean.
Power to the workers united together respect to you all from the UK and Ireland
Once Trump get in office this will happen again . Dont let the Republican Party fool you and dont let them do this again . The only way to stop it is to stop the Republican Party . They are as bad as the devil him self . You can free your selves by voting or at least have a chance . You can also do your part by making thing to sell . Build an industry .
The fing Republican party what caused this and they are still at it . Save your selves by voting Blue .
If anyone is interested in John's book "Americanization..." I have a copy available in my ebay store, Dr. Hennen's work is always very educational and provides great insight. www.ebay.com/itm/204736578264?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=fJ4HAX6kQ2C&sssrc=2051273&ssuid=fJ4HAX6kQ2C&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
I have John's copy of Blood Letting in Appalachia. If John will pm me I will return it to him. I borrowed it when we both attended Marshall. Just found it among my books.
A bandana or bandanna (from Hindi ultimately from Sanskrit बन्धन or bandhana, "a bond" is a type of large, usually colourful kerchief, originating from the Indian subcontinent, often worn on the head or around the neck of a person.
How can you speak about the history about the bandanna that was originally hand embroidered then mass print nearly 100yrs ago
I have nothing but respect for the union brothers and sisters who wore the red bandannas, and I have worn it that way myself, but the term "Redneck" is much older, and came over from the Borderlands of England/Scotland.
My father spent 40+ years in the coal mines. He began work with simple hand tools, a carbide lamp, dynamite, and blasting caps. He then became a main line mine foreman in the largest coal mine in Perry County, KY. He then became a partner, or owner of some small coal mines, and he finished up his last years as the owner/operator of a coal trucking company. He lost his right hand between the wrist, and elbow as a result of a fellow coal miner apparently having a lapse of cognition, or judgement. He always said accidents do not happen, they are caused. He taught first aid for decades, he saved his own life, he saved other's lives, he saved one man's life who was seconds away from bleeding to death by instructing a man who had two hands how to make a tourniquet. My father continued to pay union dues after he left the employment of the mines, and operated his mines, and trucking company. During strikes in the late 1950's some of his truck drivers were pulled from their trucks, and beaten, yet my father was never threatened in any way. I also paid union dues for 16+ years. I'm well familiar with the story of the red bandanas, i get incensed when I here the term "red neck" used as a smear. I have explained the roots of that term many times to ignorant people. One last thing which I'll keep short. I'll begin by saying that i know history include the history of coal mining in Eastern KY, and WV to include the history of the UMW, and other unions for that matter. I'll simply say this then or now the Democrat party is not a friend of the working man. That's one of the greatest, and worn out lies ever perpetrated upon "working people," I would say coal miners are the best example of union members being deceived by that lie, I'll also include the UAW. Speaking of lies, neither will i lie to myself; I'd suggest for those who are interested, read up on how FDR dealt with John L. Lewis in the 1940's, for those interested in more recent history study how obama destroyed the coal industry in the 21th century. The Democrats are NOT for the working man, do not vote for them..
The red bandana is called boerenzakdoek, farmers handkerchief, in the Netherlands. At the moment it’s used as a symbol in the farmers protests in the country. People wear it around their neck or arm. Funny how a total different group uses the same symbol.
What's the name of the song? :)
It was recorded by WV Hall of Fame Musician John Ellison, Chuck Keeney (Grandon of Frank Keeney), and Thomas Jude (our manager at the museum) for a recent upgrade to our Matewan window exhibit in our physical space. It plays in the background as actor Chris Cooper narrates you through the Battle of Matewan!
Kentucky boys remember 👍🇺🇸🦅
My husbands Grandfather is Rev James E. Wilburn who was in this battle with his sons. I wish we would've seen this when we came down there in July to bury his father. We only got to see where the trailer court is with the signs about the WAR. I was disappointed not to see like a museum about this. Where is this place where they have more????????? I'd love to tour it and teach our grandchildren about those days. Thanks
Good stuff - I wish I'd been there.
Yup people had to strike to get living work conditions for this country its not like companies all got together and said lets care about our employees.
'Promo sm'
Why yes I do support the troops 07
My father-law died in a coal mine in Virgina their was a cave in 1904 my ex husband father
I missed this. I'm a proud son of union members. From my dad on down.
Ten whole people got killed? That's just another Saturday night in Baltimore.
Love, love, love, 🥰🙌🏼❤️🙏🏼✝️🙌🏼 thank you all!!!!
😔✊ as a NY ironworker i support this fully & it brings a tear to my eyes. Unite around class issues! Nothing else, color, race, red, blue crap dont matter. WORKING CLASS STAND UP! 🔥
Hm, exactly what the national socialist Deutscher arbeiter partei.
@mcnally211. It's amazing how white people bri g up race to black people it's so crazy. white people came to America that was own by native Americans
The museum is fantastic. We made a trip from Michigan and learned so much about the union history.
Just spent the weekend down in WV with a member of the Pack family from Chapmansville.....something to behold...the history and raw truth I learned I hold dear
Been to Matewan..at the time this museum was in a storefront. New place looks nice, guess I'll have to venture out again down there.
In the least expected environment, you find this "real exchange". Wonderful!
I have fulfilled my promises to you how about your return of favor I need a home
thank you!
You sign a lease with them, you loose your 2nd amendment rights? Dafuq?!?!
Great presentation!
Thanks for all you've done to serve Matewan your family is a true inspiration! I think your words are not only an example for what must happen for the revitalization of Matewan, but for our entire country to rebuild. Very Inspiring! May God Bless WV and America!
are you one of those red agitators?
Ben Barkey here.
Love that, and sadly I am stuck in Europe, I was many years visiting the Matewan Massacre and filmed it and would have loved to join this amazing event. Love Mathias Kessler
I am sorry I missed it. Thank you for keeping his unknown part of history alive
Solidarity from Istanbul, Turkey :)
Wish I could have been there for the celebration.
Sorry, I can't make it. Keep up the good work.
My Great Grandfather was the Rev. James Elexander Wilburn...I have encountered various places where he is referred to as John Wilburn, but John was his son. I hope to get this corrected before it becomes a permanent error in history. I so enjoyed watching this video, it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for all of your efforts to save Blair Mountain.
You are absolutely correct, Evelyn. That's my mistake. I should've double checked my notes before recording that voiceover. Won't happen again. So glad you enjoyed the video.
The powerful go out of their way to cover up anything of significance to the working man. No class warfare?
This is a terrific video on the mine wars and the wonderful Town of Matewan. I had the pleasure of working on that floodwall and the floodwall graphics with my design team at the Corps of Engineers in the 1990's and spent many sessions with former mayor Bob McCoy talking about the town's history and its future. Wonderful people and inspiring history, I fully recommend visiting Matewan and immersing yourself in its history.
Thanks for bringing up Sundown Towns. I'm from one in Illinois- Salem. Locals kept the sign up until later than most- I heard until the early 80s, but I can't verify it. There was only one Black family that I knew of during the 90s. Probably remains pretty much the same today.
Matewan turned me on to independent films and of course, being of Appalachian/West Virginia heritage, this story is about my roots! Wonderful episode. Watch just about everything Chris Cooper is in!
A truly wonderful tour. I had the privilege of visiting the Mine Wars Museum a few years ago. I am glad to see the community working together to preserve this important part of our state's history.
Can't wait to stop in here this summer lots of history..I want to see the whole are its beautiful
how was it? did you go to the museum?
@@donHooligan yes I did I bought a couple shirts and a painting out of there love that place will definitely go to west Virginia every year
